25.01.2022 Seven magnificent tapestries are included in @studioekonugroho Eko Nugroho’s iconic installation ‘Lot Lost’ on loan from the @artgalleryofnsw . Indonesian text on the works address Nugroho’s interest in addressing major issues in contemporary Indonesian society. In an excerpt from the @jakartaglobe German art dealer @m.arndt Matthias Arndt has said His tapestries, or "manual embroideries" as he calls it, not only provide work to many textile workers who otherwise would be u...nemployed due to the rise of new computer-generated technologies, but also translate traditional crafts and folk elements into today’s contemporary Indonesian art and thus, into the universal language of contemporary art. Western audiences enjoy and embrace this level of engagement with art that is connected rather than detached from its viewers and society. Eko’s work expresses its surroundings unapologetically. Eko is also simply a genius in his use of color, material and meaning in his paintings, drawings, sculptures, embroideries and installations. 21.01.2022 Celebrating NAIDOC week 2020 through our First Nations contemporary art collection. Images - Karla Dickens, Mother’s Little Helpers, [image capture], 2019, single channel video [07:32]. Image courtesy of the artist and Andrew Baker Art Dealer @karla_dickens @andrewbakerartdealer ... Lismore-based Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens has partnered with Bunurong, Yuin and Tasmanian man Bruce Pascoe to create Mother’s Little Helper, a film project produced with Blacklock Media. "As Indigenous Australians we connect with Country and refer to the planet as 'Mother Earth'. Recently a small group of First Nation adults and children from different parts of Australia gathered in Bingara, NSW to create a visual story. Our short film speaks of our concerns and the importance of healing ‘The Mother’ with the help of our youth, who are our future and our only hope. Known and respected for his great words Uncle Bruce Pascoe will not speak in this film - it is the as viewers responsibly to look hard, learn quick and listen deeply. What will you see? What action will you take?" Karla Dickens is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist whose work discloses aspects of the nation’s history, while Bruce Pascoe is an author, educator and farmer who in recent years has awakened Australians to the agricultural practices of pre-settlement Aboriginal people. In February 2019 Karla and Bruce embarked on a filming project with Blacklock Media. The filming has taken place in the landscapes surrounding the town of Bingara, which is in Gamilaaraay Country, and a number of Aboriginal students from Bingara Central School are participating in the project. #naidoc2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #aboriginalland #yuin #art #video

13.01.2022 Our current exhibition Gangguan Tenggara - Edisi Indonesia features the acclaimed painter @zicoalbaiquni From the @qagoma #AsiaPacificTriennial curator Tarun Nagesh. Zico Albaiquni’s paintings are rich with diverse themes and genres from the history of Indonesian art, incorporating early influences from his father’s generation of artists, as well as referencing works that have featured in previous Asia Pacific Triennials and Venice Biennales. From the role of painters in ...traditional Sundanese contexts to the commodification of Indonesia as an exotic tourist destination, we explore some of the factors that have shaped and enriched the artist’s practice. Art is an inseparable part of Zico Albaiquni’s family. His father, Tisna Sanjaya whose work appeared in ‘The 3rd Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art‘ (APT3) in 1999 has been a long-term source of inspiration. Albaiquni grew up hearing bedtime stories of Sanjaya’s ‘exhibition adventures’ as an APT artist, but he was an adult before he realised the significance of his father’s work to the history of Indonesian contemporary art Sanjaya and his peers were among the first generation of contemporary Indonesian artists to be widely recognised internationally. Albaiquni comes from a Sundanese family, an ethnic group from the western part of the Indonesian island of Java. According to Albaiquni, the Sundanese believe that art, religion, spirituality and the environment are inseparable. A painter, in the Western sense, is often seen as a genius who creates artwork to inspire others someone valued for theirindividuality. In Sundanese tradition, however, the pelukis (painter) is someone who connects society, spirits and the environment to create balance through their work; it is a much more community-oriented role. Albaiquni is intrigued by these two opposing traditions and considers how the pelukis, at every step of the artistic process, is guided by a set of rituals both physical and metaphysical, asking for a blessing from their community, the spirits and nature before starting a work, and repeating this ritual when the painting is finished. #contemporary #painting #indonesia #art #gallery #regional See more

10.01.2022 Now available to view online #linkinbio Gangguan Tenggara - Edisi Indonesia will open to the public Monday 21. Gangguan Tenggara Edisi Indonesia is the fourth and final in Bega Valley Regional Gallery’s South/East Interference exhibition series. In this iteration the focus is on Indonesia and how we relate to one of our closest neighbours, says curator and gallery director Iain Dawson. In the context of an exhibition series about the south east from Bega’s place in sou...th east New South Wales to Australia’s place in the region much of the work in Gangguan Tenggara highlights issues of perspective, community, centres and margins. Gangguan Tenggara features Leyla Stevens, Zico Albaiquni and Eko Nugroho, three artists who are making work about moving forward in Indonesian history but also acknowledging what has happened there the ghosts that still linger, Dawson says. The exhibition title Gangguan Tenggara roughly translates as South East Disturbance. The focus is on political agitation and its ongoing consequences, but the exhibition also seeks to disrupt the way Indonesia is seen by Australians as a playground and holiday destination. For Dawson, it also makes a point about what regional galleries can do. As he says, There’s a definite feeling that we are reaching out as well as bringing things in. Exhibition continues to November 7. Supported by @begavalleyshire @creatensw with loans from the artists, @yavuzgallery and @artgalleryofnsw See more

09.01.2022 Celebrating NAIDOC week 2020 through our contemporary collection. Naomi Hobson The Good Sister 2019 digital print 81 x 110cm ... BVRG collection Laine always wants to go for a ride on her bike, it’s her bike but she can’t ride it yet it’s too big for her she keeps falling off it so I take her for rides around the block. Katarna, 2019 Naomi Hobson lives and works in Coen, a remote Indigenous community in Cape York, where she plays an important role as an artist, mentor and creative inspiration. Adolescent Wonderland comprises a new body of photographic portraits that establishes new narratives around black representation, identity and gender in Coen. In Coen our young people are not just engrossed with living a quiet life based on ancient cultures and beliefs. In reality there is a search for a much deeper engagement with the world. What I see is a pop-culture fusion. Our young people are immersed in global social media, so they have a much broader sense of a global culture than every generation before them. There is a constant and persistent search in Coen by young people of ‘how to be’ in this world. What this series explores is how pop culture and indigenous culture are fusing and allowing the inherent energy and youth of our young people to express their individuality. I am applying the after-effects to focus the attention towards the subjects in their transition between childhood and adulthood, where the subjects are still finding themselves through adventure and playfulness. They have not yet let go of their childhood. Naomi Hobson, April 2019 @naomi_hobson_artist @cairnsartgallery @naidocweek @begavalleyshire #alwayswasalwayswillbe
