06.01.2022 I just felt strongly tonight that I needed to shed some light on what the drought actually means in some real terms to us and to those we know. I’ve been follow...ing some pages on FB and have read articles and comments that are expressing a lot of frustration and anger caused in reaction to some public comments. Firstly I’d like to say that really - not everyone does understand what farmers are going through right now....and you know what....I think that’s ok. I don’t understand what many others go through in their day to day life. So here goes... * We need rain! Basically this is an element that we cannot control. Moisture during the year helps crops to germinate and grow, waters the pastures to feed stock, keeps dam levels at a healthy level, and puts water in house tanks. This last point can be the least obvious point for people who live in towns and cities. You see, if we don’t get rain...we can’t shower every day or sometime flush the loo! We have to consider every time we turn on a tap. * Some people are saying we should be more prepared for times like this. Well - are you always prepared for disaster or tough times? Do you have enough money saved that will get you through months of no income? Last month we had to purchase our first load of grain to keep sheep alive. The last grain we sold averaged us $140 a tonne. To buy it in cost us $430 a tonne! I can’t blame those who are selling it at this price. It is a supply and demand thing but it does make it very very tough. Also - to actually source this grain at the moment is verging on impossible * Govt loans - yes - there have been some concessional loans made available to farmers. However - the actuality of these is...it’s not for purchasing fodder! It’s only to assist with freight and storage. * one of the comments I read that prob frustrated me the most was that farmers should stop mooching off society and all go and get jobs that actually give us money! Well...most farmers I know have a spouse that works ‘off-farm’ or works fulltime assisting on the farm or in the farm office (I do both!). This isn’t a TV show! We don’t just ‘check the boundary fence)! Farming is very very hard work. The men aren’t ‘slow’ or dumb! This is an industry that requires a lot of knowledge about livestock, machinery, maintenance, finance, technology and management skills. For example - for shearing....a farmer must hire contractors to shear, organise the movement and availability of sometimes 1000’s of animals, ensure work areas are compliant and the bill is paid! * That we are cruel to animals! Well I can’t speak for everyone but we absolutely love our stock! We are so hurt every day that we can’t lavish food on for these girls! They work hard at growing wool and babies for us (and you!!!!). To lose them to starvation and exhaustion is awful. It does affect our financial bottom line but in the end we just wish it was better for them. We don’t kill animals for fun and we certainly don’t do it lightly. Lastly - I think in the majority - people try their best to understand. Most in the general community understand that not only their meat, but their coffee, sugar, milk, cheese, bread, bacon, nuggets....the list goes on...is not going to be available if your farming sector is doing it too tough to continue or we all walk off the farm and get ‘real jobs’. Keep loving on each other, be kind and humble and generous when you can. Xxxxx See more
