22.01.2022 In a recent post I discussed Do It Yourself recruitment - one of the three main types of recruitment methods you could use in Australia. Today's post is about the second method - using the free Australian Government service "Job Active". Jobactive commenced in 1997, known then as the Job Network. The Jobactive website quotes "One of our 1700 jobactive providers across Australia will work directly with you to find job-ready candidates. No matter your industry, they'll offer ...you end-to-end recruitment services, at no cost to you....." Employers must understand that the Jobactive provider's main aim is to place someone in a job - they don't get paid by the Govt unless they do this. The higher the jobseekers level of job disadvantage, the more the provider is paid for placement. Could these providers be biased? Do they guarantee their candidates? Jobseekers are also obliged to find and accept job referrals in order to ensure that they continue receiving Centrelink payments. Does this requirement cause the wrong candidates to apply? 20.01.2022 When you think of the qualities that might help you win your next job, do you first think about your qualifications, or your past experience, or the references that you can provide? These attributes are clearly very important, but they really only help demonstrate to your employer that you meet the fundamental criteria for the job! More important than these for most jobs, and most employers, are your softer skills; like your personality, your communication, your diligence.... However these are much less tangible matters, so they are harder to demonstrate and discuss when applying for a job. Even with practice and a skilled interviewer many people will find it very difficult to describe their personal style adequately! For example a common interview question might be "what kind of team member are you?". Would you mention for example how 'trusting' you are, or how you can 'easily build rapport', or how 'tolerant' or ' involving' you are? Could you demonstrate your 'safety awareness', or your 'consideration for other team members', or your 'co-ordination' qualities? Often we have hobbies that we are very passionate about, and cannot envisage life without them. But can the same be said about the work we do? 01.01.2022 If you are looking to become more self-aware and learn more about the real ‘workplace you’ a great place to start is to undertake an online Personality Questionnaire. There are many ‘ordinary’ options available online so be careful to choose something that is professionally regarded. I recommend a Personality Questionnaire called Wave Professional Styles. It is arguably the most comprehensive and accurate personality questionnaire on the market internationally and has been ...rated as such by the British Society of Psychologists. It is suited to any individual that has year 11 or 12 education or above and covers workplace style in virtually all occupations. There are no right or wrong answers in a quality personality questionnaire such as WAVE and the reports do not try to describe you in minimalistic terms such as ‘cat’, or categorise you into one of, say, twelve basic personality types. Each individual’s report will be different just like in real-life where nobody is the same, and everybody has individuality!
