23.01.2022 Recent research found that daily sedentary behaviour exceeding 5 hours is associated with lower cognitive function in older adults. However, mixing in physical activity served to mitigate some of this risk. 'Efforts should be made to promote physical activity in the aging population,' researchers concluded. 20.01.2022 Virgin Atlantic saved $5.4 million in fuel over 8 months by deploying simple behavioural interventions to modify pilot behaviour, including (1) normative feedback, (2) personalised goal setting, and (3) prosocial incentives. 15.01.2022 More solid research documenting the failure of financial incentives (US$550 in this study) to induce health behaviour change in workplaces. We would argue this type of financial incentive does more harm than good by undermining intrinsic motivation. http://www.npr.org//why-employers-incentives-for-weight-lo

15.01.2022 Mass-media campaigns as sub-optimal, possibly detrimental... "Public policy has often relied on assumptions of rationality when accounting for human behavior, which has led to sub-optimal policies in the past. For example, citizens are sometimes bombarded by mass-media campaigns (designed to decrease smoking, increase seat-belt use, etc.) that assume they will be able to process an onslaught of messages to their best advantage. "But such campaigns often have not worked, and ...may even have backfired at times." https://hbr.org//why-the-u-s-government-is-embracing-behav

13.01.2022 Fairly high-level discussion here, but certainly worth it for this graphic on the intention-action gap... which perfectly illustrates our take that this 'gap' should really be described as a 'chasm'. http://www.ideas42.org//nudge-action-behavioural-science-/
12.01.2022 The biggest urban design variables impacting physical activity levels in cities: the density of homes, intersections, public transport, and parks. In the places that score best in these factors you will find people getting an extra 68-89 minutes of activity each week. That's a big difference... check it out: http://www.thelancet.com//PIIS0140-6736(15)01284-2/fulltext
12.01.2022 This is our foundation: spend the time to get crystal clear about 'the behaviour you want to see more of'. When you figure this out, designing interventions will suddenly seem super easy. #behaviourchange #changeagents #change4good #behaviordesign
11.01.2022 Should your community or corporate wellness program use active or passive methods to engage participants? There is great new research on this important subject, which found active recruitment key to helping hard to reach populations "Though passive recruitment is more cost efficient it may reduce the reach of sugary drink reduction strategies in lower educated and economic residents in rural communities."... 08.01.2022 We like to talk about Habits, Not Handouts... and here is a terrific Harvard Business Review article on the topic. 'Academics refer to this phenomenon as the crowding-out effect of explicit incentives on intrinsic motivation. In other words, associating an economic value with a certain activity changes the nature of the exchange. If health care workers sanitize their hands because it is in the best interest of the patient (and themselves), introducing monetary rewards may change their motivation to a contractual exchange of hand sanitizing for money.' https://hbr.org//incentives-dont-help-people-change-but-pe

07.01.2022 What if the sum of the parts were greater than the whole? This article reveals that breaking one complex task into a series of smaller, more-manageable tasks (in this case, moving house with housing-assistance vouchers) helps with task completion (deemed the segmentation effect). This echoes our approach to boosting physical activity by breaking the process of hitting daily activity targets down into many small steps done over time. ... https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observat/moving-on-up/

05.01.2022 Great new research from Deakin showing long-term maintenance of behavioural changes from walking programs in the UK for populations aged 45-75. 03.01.2022 This short, concise article distills the essence of what BDW believes is required to successfully change behaviour, and summarises our on-going frustration with public funds wasted on awareness-raising campaigns. "What effective behavioral-intervention methods have in common is that they attack the roots of peoples behaviors in sophisticated ways, and as a result, they take a fair amount of effort to develop. Awareness-raising, on the other hand, is easier and more straight...forward, and this can help explain why its so prevalent despite the dearth of empirical evidence it works. Activists and politicians and public-health officials are just as susceptible to cognitive miserliness as everyone else theyll often get nudged down the path of least resistance toward awareness-raising rather than carefully and empirically evaluate what works and what doesnt. (It doesnt hurt that its often easier to take credit for a splashy PSA campaign than for more under-the-radar interventions.)" http://nymag.com/scienceof//07/awareness-is-overrated.html
03.01.2022 Public Health England recently released a report encouraging stronger health+transport partnerships as the ultimate win-win approach to achieving both health and transport objectives.
