11.01.2022 6 Things to Improve your Trade Business! I’m often asked by Tradies, what they can do to improve their business. There are so many small things that will have a huge impact. It’s those small consistent daily actions that really makes a difference in the long run. Here are some things to start with: * Set up an auto response on your phone so that you can reject a call with a polite message and call them back later when it’s convenient to you... * Spend 10 mins tidying up your vehicle at the end of each day, you can waste so much time searching for consumables in an untidy vehicle * Send invoices immediately so you don’t lose track, using a good job management app can make this a lot easier * Set aside time each day to call customers that you’ve sent quotes to. You may be missing quotes because you havent followed up. 30 mins should be plenty if you do this daily * Don’t let overdue invoices get out of hand, call the customer and ask if there are any issues with the payment * Get the right staff! It’s a really tough market but you need to put the effort into attracting employees who are well aligned with your work ethics, and will work hard for you. 08.01.2022 HOW DO I GET TO KNOW A BUSINESS THAT I WORK WITH? Thank you so much Alison for this question. To be honest, it’s a little bit like dating! When a tradie is referred to me, we start with a good chat on the phone. I find out who they are and what makes them tick, and they find out about me and what kind of services I provide that will suit their needs. We establish what their main frustrations are, and they decide whether they like the vibe of Behind the Boots. Their businesses... are an extension of themselves, so there is no way they will let someone look after their admin without finding a good professional connection. Once we establish that we are interested in working together, I set up a face to face meeting (or zoom if they are too far away, or too busy). We chat for about 45 mins over a coffee or a beer, and we map out exactly what they need administratively, and how I can meet those needs. I have a range of questions that I ask each tradie in these meetings, so by the end of our meeting, I know them pretty well. Everyone knows that you don’t get married after the first date! So, I send them a proposal which connects our services for a month. During that month, I will usually go on site to meet them and their team and get a bit more of a feel for how they work. If we still love working together after a month, we secure an ongoing subscription to a package that suits their business. Along the way, I make observations about how we can streamline processes and increase their profit. They love having someone on board who can take care of the tasks they find boring, look after their customers in a professional way, and help them increase their overall profit.

Here's a picture of my boots, they no longer look as lovely and new as this, but they have seen me through many days on a work site learning what Tradie life is like.
