14.01.2022 I came from Iran. I came from a rich country. My tummy is full. I don’t want food. I need freedom. This is what I’m fighting for. If I was worried about food ...I had enough food in my country. There was enough food in the detention centre. Give me my freedom and I’m happy to start eating. They said ‘no, we can’t give you anything like that’ and I said ‘that’s ok, then leave me alone’. Ali is one of the narrators whose stories feature in our They Cannot Take the Sky exhibit with Behind the Wire. Watch this space for details on exhibition dates once our partner galleries re-open. 14.01.2022 Condemned to the Labyrinth: the ever shifting maze of policy, bureaucracy, and exclusion of people seeking asylum in so-called Australia is a mini series of conversations hosted by podcast Carceral Complex exploring the frustratingly complex nature of the detention industry in Australia. Two episodes are out already, listen now via: https://carceralcomplexpodcast.wordpress.com/listen/
13.01.2022 "Living in Christmas Island, it was just, it was just kind of a hell, but next to heaven. The first time I went to Christmas Island, everything was ok. I think ...I was new and all I wanted to focus on my education, and write more, and help people as much as I can, but 11 months later, everything was just mixed up. I didn’t know when I would be free and my last weeks were just horrible weeks. I couldn’t breathe properly and I felt in a place where I didn’t want to live in the world anymore." Hani is one of the storytellers featured in our digital campaign of They Cannot Take the Sky with Behind the Wire. Stay tuned for more from her. See more
12.01.2022 They Cannot Take the Sky: Stories from Detention won Best Temporary of Travelling Exhibition at last night's Museums and Galleries National Awards! We're looking to tour it across Australia, and you can see it now in Craigieburn with Hume Events: https://www.facebook.com/events/405002409968858/
10.01.2022 Last month, George Floyd was murdered by a police officer in the U.S. and the groundswell for racial justice rose up not only in America, but made its way to Australia as well. We are asking: how do we fight systemic white supremacy to end the incarceration of black people, Indigenous people, and people of colour in Australia? Before COVID-19 impacted communities here in Victoria and across the world, Road to Refuge and Behind the Wire had planned a tour of They Cannot Take t...he Sky across regional areas in Victoria. The exhibition platformed the voices and stories of people who sought asylum in Australia but were instead met with mandatory detention. Circumstances have since changed, and so have we. To mark Refugee Week, we will be elevating some of the stories from the exhibit, to speak to themes of detention and incarceration. We'll be rolling out video-clips and live events over the next few weeks to probe questions and conversations on what justice really means.

09.01.2022 Join David and Aran as they discuss the mandatory detention of people seeking asylum, drawing parallels between that and the over-incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, other Black and PoC folk, and the prison industrial complex more broadly
07.01.2022 The police have confirmed that the death of the Rohingya refugee was caused by suicide. They tortured him by ignoring his severe illness and after five years of suffering, he choose to kill himself today. I am lost for words...shame on all those who have abandoned humanity.#Manus
07.01.2022 When I was in Sri Lanka, I was very close with my mother, my dad, my younger brother. But things have changed. The war, being in the detention centre, and then being in the community for three and a half years without them. It has separated us.
