18.01.2022 It is common for most of us to regularly experience negative and unhelpful thoughts throughout the day. We may doubt ourselves, lack confidence, worry about failure or rejection, ruminate on past experiences. However your thoughts are just thoughts, it is important to remember you are more than just your thoughts. Your thoughts in themselves are not harmful, however your responses can be. Try just allowing the thought to be there, and instead focus your attention on the present moment. Notice what you can see, hear, smell, feel or taste. The less tightly you hold on to the thoughts the less influence and power they have over you. The more you can live in the moment, the easier it will be to take actions towards living the life you want.
18.01.2022 9 Tips for Helping People Make Change 1. Adopt a partnership/team approach It is important that the person feels they are on equal footing and that they are comfortable to express their feelings, ideas and concerns about change without being judged. Support them to make their own decisions and be respectful of their choices, even if you dont agree with them. 2. Be aware of your own agenda and assumptions as your personal beliefs and attitudes can have a significant i...Continue reading

15.01.2022 ARE YOU BEING KIND TO YOURSELF? With the Coronavirus the world has suddenly changed in a lot of ways and it is a really difficult time for a lot of people. It is only natural that you may be feeling stressed, fearful or that its brings up a lot of anxiety and worry. It is therefore really important to be kind to yourself at the moment. When we are distressed we are generally not kind to ourselves. We beat ourselves up with lots of self judgments and become overwhelmed wi...th negative thoughts and feelings, which then impacts our mood and behaviours in a negative way. This is why learning self compassion and becoming your own best friend is so important. I wanted to share this useful document by Russ Harris, that provides some tips for developing self compassion. Self-compassion involves acknowledging your own suffering and responding kindly. In other words, treating yourself with the same warmth, caring and kindness that youd extend to someone you love x Amanda
14.01.2022 Chronic pain is very complex and can be devastating for the person experiencing it. This is a great article demonstrating some of this complexity and why its important for the individual to have a better understanding of pain and all the different aspects that can influence it and how they can reduce the impact the pain has on them. There is generally limited evidence for medical and surgical options or quick fixes for chronic pain and yet despite this, many doctors recommend them, and unfortunately they can have potentially harmful consequences. There are many other holistic and individualised non-invasive ways to better manage pain and improve the persons quality of life.
14.01.2022 I was fortunate enough to spend the last 2 weeks at a pain management workshop in Sydney, put on by the University of Sydney and Royal North Shore Hospital. It was a great experience and a chance to hear about some of the latest research in pain management. Looking to see how I can incorporate some of my learnings into my OT pain management work. If you would like support to better manage your pain and improve your quality of life, I am taking bookings. I provide clinical occupational therapy services from our Wynn Vale clinic. Medicare rebates apply if referred by GP. Also health insurance rebates may apply. x Amanda
14.01.2022 WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? HOW CAN IT IMPROVE YOUR LIFE? People often ask me what Mindfulness is about, as it is a term that keeps popping up a lot recently, yet many people dont really know what it means, and how it is helpful? So I thought I would give you a quick overview of what mindfulness is all about. I have also put together a brief mindfulness breathing exercise that you can try yourself if you like. Mindfulness in a nut shell is about being present in the here and now, b...Continue reading
13.01.2022 MOTIVATION I love this photo I took on Sunday, not just because its a nice view of Adelaide from Ansteys Hill, but because I know I walked up the hill before I took it. I have been struggling a bit with motivation to exercise lately. Winter doesnt make it easy. However I am trying to exercise and walk more, so pleased with my effort as clocked up 11,000 steps on Sunday. I also got to enjoy some sunshine, good company and this great view. It can be hard to get motivate...d to be active, especially when you are so busy, its cold & wet and their are lots of other competing demands. If you are trying to get going and motivated be kind to yourself, try and find activities that you enjoy and that suit your lifestyle, go with a buddy if you can, slowly grade up what you do and celebrate your achievements along the way. Good luck x Amanda

09.01.2022 Dealing with uncertainty and people can be challenging, and our need for change, clarity and resolution is often not possible. Expecting this can drive us a little crazy. We cant control what other people do or think, nor should they control us. This message below is a good reminder to me that it is important to focus on what we do have control over; our own thoughts and behaviours, and that we can control how we respond to situations and other other people. Lets focus on living life in line with our values, being kind to ourselves and others and doing the best we can (no ones perfect).
06.01.2022 The current Coronavirus situation is very unsettling and distressing for a lot of people. None of us has seen the world change so much in such a very short period of time, and it can be very scary. There is so much uncertainty, people losing their jobs, financial stress, being isolated from friends and family, fearful of getting sick, worried about loved ones. Its a lot to deal with and therefore it is really important to look after your physical and mental health and to support those around you. We need to all help each other to get through this. I have posted this video that Russ Harris and kindly put together that provides some quick strategies that can help with coping with the Corona virus.
03.01.2022 Merry Christmas everyone
