14.01.2022 A little known fact about Siena... the host of this conference... the province of Siena is carbon neutral and has been for some years now. A fantastic achievement. Bravissimi as they say.

13.01.2022 The Invasive Species Council just received a reminder that submissions to the NSW Pest Management Review close on Mon 30 Nov. Get your submission in now. See: h...ttp://www.nrc.nsw.gov.au/pest-animal-management In our submission we're encouraging an increased focus on preventing new invasive species. We are looking for action on growing populations of feral horses and deer, a goat policy, action on escaped high-risk pet birds and reptiles, action on new invasive freshwater fish like tilapia and a new foresighting capability. ________ Here is what the NRC sent us in their reminder: "The Natural Resources Commission (Commission) is undertaking a review of pest animal management in NSW. We put out a call for submissions on 15 October and the cut-off date, 30 November 2015 is soon approaching. The Commissioner, Dr John Keniry, says There is no easy answer to tackling the pest animal issue. At this stage nothing is in or out, and all solutions are on the table. We urge landholders, community groups, agencies and other interest groups who are impacted by pest animals to provide a submission to the issues paper and help set the direction for reform. The issues paper released in mid-October focuses on priority issues and opportunities for managing pest animals in NSW. Issues raised in submissions and regional tours will be used to inform draft recommendations. The draft report is due to be released in February 2016. Further information and updates on the review will be provided on the Commission’s website. View the issues paper and make your submission by 30 November: http://www.nrc.nsw.gov.au/pest-animal-management _____ "Dr John Keniry's reflections from regional tours: As part of the consultation on the issues paper, the Commission undertook a series of regional meetings around the state to explore different on-ground pest animal management issues. The tours to North Coast, Riverina, Central West, Western, South East and Northern Tablelands were an opportunity to meet with and listen to landholders and different public and private land managers. Consultation to date has reaffirmed that pest animal management is an issue that affects people in a number of ways. Whether it be the direct economic and social impact of their stock being attacked by foxes, wild dogs or feral pigs, or other impacts like the damage to the environment that feral cats and rabbits can do. We’ve also looked in to the issue of goats and how they are managed in western NSW, the impact on the environment they have and the economic benefits they can bring. The tours have highlighted great examples of community collaborative action, where public and private land managers work together using integrated approaches to multi-pest species issues. We heard how innovative research and new control techniques are being developed and implemented, including innovation in aerial surveillance technologies, developments in KHV for carp control, and new feral pig baits being trialled in Western LLS. There have been some stand-out statistics presented to us about the impact of pest animals. Statistics such as lamb-marking percentages being reduced by as much as 50 percent from predation by feral animals; and that carp, might now comprise over 80 percent of all the fish biomass in our inland rivers. The tours have also highlighted issues around the impact of deer and pest birds, such as Indian Mynas. These are interesting topics as the management of deer is a divisive issue within the community, while managing the Indian Myna is dependent on collective action, particularly in the urban /rural interface. Across all regions, we were told about the value of having local ownership of pest animal issues and how stakeholders and the broader community are ready to implement the principle of shared responsibility. From talking to the community we know a fresh approach for managing pest animals is needed. An approach that includes community in decision making, that clarifies roles, responsibilities and accountability, that is guided by good science and on-ground expertise and engages the community in the process. We thank all the people who have contributed to the review so far and for sharing their insights and on-ground experience with us. We are still eager to hear from as many people as possible and invite landholders, community groups, agencies and other interest-groups to provide a submission to the issues paper to help set the direction for pest animal reform. If we are truly going to tackle the pest animal problem, then we need your help on how to get there. Dr John Keniry, Natural Resources Commissioner
