06.01.2022 Picking the right plant for your vertical garden Are you thinking about getting a vertical garden but you are not sure which plants to put in it? Here are some simple guidelines to help you make the right choices. Light probably the most important factor for plant choice, without enough the plants will eventually die off. For indoors consider a position not too far from a window, most indoor plants wont need direct sunlight but a good level of indirect light will keep them ...thriving. If there is not enough indirect light consider installing some bright LEDs or halogen lamps. For outdoors plants will often have a label indicating how much light they need, this is a very good guide when it comes to vertical gardens, too. Water all plants will need water, but how much will strongly depend on the type of plant. The good news is that BelAquas vertical gardens have a built-in automatic irrigation system. You just set the timer to correspond to the water needs of your plants and there is almost no limit to the types of plants you can keep in terms of water demand. If you have your vertical garden without automatic irrigation getting enough water to the plants can be a problem. In this case for a sunny position pick plants that are drought tolerant and need little water, and for both semi-shade and shade pick plants that do not strongly depend on daily waterting, just in case you forget one day. Nutrients to flourish, plants will also need some nutrients. They absorb all the carbon they need to grow from the air, but they rely on their roots to get them nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and trace elements. In a vertical garden the amount of soil is limited so after a while you will need to add some fertilizer to keep your plants in good shape. Most slow release fertilzers provide a good mix of nutrients and can be added to the planting pockets after the plants are in. In a BelAqua vertical garden fertilizing is even easier, just add some soluble fertilizer to the water reservoir every now and then and the automatic irrigation will circulate the nutrients with every irrigation cycle. Climate pick the right plants for your climate, e.g. choose frost hardy plants if you have your vertical garden outside and you live in an area where you may get frost in winter time. But if you buy your plants from a quality nursery they will be able to point out the plants suitable for your area. So in many ways a vertical garden is not different from your regular garden and most plants will adapt really well to being grown in a vertical garden. All they care about is light, water, and nutrients if the ground is horizontal or the soil is in a vertical garden, they dont really mind.
