23.01.2022 Meet Sebastian, he's quite the dude. Last week he managed to fracture the top of his femur at the hip joint. Not cool. In these cases the fractured piece is too small to re-attach, and if left it will cause chronic hip problems. So what we did with Sebastian is perform surgery to remove the entire top of the femur, including the fractured piece, and we reconstruct a "false" joint in the hip without any bony attachment. Cats cope very well with this procedure, and we saw Sebastian for his one week check up, and he is already cruising around using the leg quite happily!

22.01.2022 This is Major and Champ. They are the dogs of Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. Champ has already been to the White House, but Major hasn’t yet. Champ can’t wait to show him around. Both 14/10 would be an honor to pet

19.01.2022 I often get asked if putting animals to sleep is the worst part of my job. While it is generally sad and can be painful for both us and the owners, I am lucky to have the luxury afforded to me to help end a beloved pet’s discomfort or suffering. I tell people I could never be a human medico and not be able to help end people’s suffering through voluntary euthanasia, for where there is no possible hope of relief from their suffering. For this gift, I am truly thankful. It’s ...not easy though.. Last week we had to say goodbye to little Dusty, whom we have all become very attached to over the past year while she has been treated for diabetes. Unfortunately though, Dusty had various complications from her diabetes, and her owner, Neil, had to make the difficult and brave decision that the best way to show how much he loved his little mate, Dusty, was to say goodbye. Dusty wasn’t very old, and that makes the decision even more difficult. So thank you Neil, and thank you to all the pet owners out there that make the difficult and selfless decision to say goodbye to their loved ones when it comes time. I am grateful. Rest in Peace Dusty. Dr Shannon

14.01.2022 Want to help fight cancer and keep your pupper relaxed and happy at the vet at the same time?! We're fundraising for Canteen's National Bandana Day, to help raise money for childhood cancer, and when you buy a bandana, we can spray it with Adaptil for free to use on your dog. Adaptil is a natural pheromone that comforts and reassures dogs and puppies to help them feel calm and relaxed. It's especially helpful for dogs that might feel a bit stressed by their visit to the vet.

12.01.2022 With Covid, I have seen the demand for #pups skyrocket. And that has meant an increase in supply. With even mixed breed pups being sold between $3-12k - it’s no...t hard to do the math on how much a litter of 4-7 pups will earn someone. And that means, dogs are being worked HARD to produce and plenty that shouldn’t be pushing out pups at all. And guess what? It’s pretty hard visually to tell the difference between a good pup and a not so healthy one (if only we could see their livers/ hearts etc on the outside!). You’d think that if you just dropped $5k on a pup they’d be good? Sadly, no. Second, most people just meet their pup for the first time when they pick them up. So how do you know what your getting? Trusting in someone that doesn’t even really know what they are giving you? The person who sold you that pup had no malicious intent - they didn’t know that the itchy mum with chronic allergies or the dad with chronic gut issues is actually likely to pass those things on... there aren’t many cardiologists in the #country or #rural areas (like none) and they don’t even know that their dog has a heart condition and is a ticking time bomb... and then before you know it, you have a dog with a high maintenance (and expensive to diagnose and treat) condition that you LOVE and are already bonded to... So, from the moment you pick that dang cute pup up, your first phone call is to GET #INSURANCE cover. You wouldn’t drive your new Lamborghini out of that lot without it... and yes, I get it. Insurance companies can be shitbags to deal with, BUT you’ve got a better shot than with the money you were supposed to put under the mattress (that you never did!). (A non sponsored post for all the #covidpups out there ) #bondivet See more

05.01.2022 Are you missing seeing your friends during the pandemic? Well you pets may be missing out seeing 4 legged friends too. That is especially significant if you have a new puppy, because it's important for them to socialise at a young age to learn their manners. Ellie, the border collie puppy came in today for her puppy vaccinations, and to help her get some valuable socialisation, Dr Shannon's dog Halifax was happy to hang out in the consult too. Ellie was such a good girl, playing politely with Hali, and then sitting nicely for her photo to be taken.

01.01.2022 Happy International Dog Day, from Halifax and everyone at Belconnen Animal Hospital!
