19.01.2022 Wingham ODE 25/26 April 2015 Wingham ODE had perfect weather conditions on Saturday with beautiful warm sunny day, Sunday was a bit windy but didn't seem to dampen the spirits of those who attended. Rain received a couple of weeks earlier made the footing perfect. Luckily for us we didn't see the rain and terrible weather conditions of the Hunter Region and Central Coast Region. Our thoughts are with those people severely affected ... Thank you to all who volunteered to help on the weekend this includes all who help make the event work together with our Dressage Judges, Show jumping Judge and Course Designer last but no least a big thank you to all who help with event preparation. A special thank you to Margaret and Graham Muldoon for allowing us the use of their beautiful paddock for the Dressage, Show jumping and camping. Our Sponsors Vet Adrian Owen Equine Veterinary Services covering the Mid North Coast Region Ph 0419276794 - Vella Stock Feeds donating bags of feed for prizes and Valley Industries - Taree for the supply of their bus. 19.01.2022 Now that the horse industry is moving towards evidence-based worming and away from routine worming, there is, understandably, a bit of confusion about when and ...how often do do faecal egg counts and/or administer a worming treatment. We understand your confusion and so we have summarised the key points in a one-page Seasonal Guide - why not print it out (A4 or A3), laminate it and pop it in your feed shed or stable. https://evidencebasedworming.com.au//2018/11/Seasonal-Guid See more

18.01.2022 Physiological Effort in Melbourne Cup Racehorses When watching the Melbourne Cup, have you ever wondered what is going on inside the racing horses? In anticipa...tion of the jump out at the start from the barriers, a horse’s heart rate is already elevated to 150-160 beats per minute from a resting heart rate of 30-35 beats per minute in a fit horse. In anticipation, the splenic reserve which stores up to 33% of the total red cell volume, is released or ‘dumped’ due to excitement and within 20 seconds the circulating red cell numbers increase by 2-3 million cells within a pin head sized spot of blood to carry more oxygen. On jump out and during the 100 metre acceleration distance to nearly 60km/hr, the increased red cell numbers deliver more oxygen to the impulsive hind quarter muscles to produce energy from high energy phosphate compounds, such as creatine, then switch to muscle glycogen as the horse reaches the race cruise speed of around 40-46 km per hour. During the race, the heart rate elevates up to 230-250 beats per minute, delivering 1.25 to 1.5 litres of blood per beat, or 287.5-350 litres per minute. A 500kg racehorse only has about 55 litres of blood of which around is 35% red blood cells, but due to splenic ‘dump’, the red cell fraction increases to 65% of the blood volume to carry more oxygen. A horse at racing speed is circulating its own blood volume 5-6 times per minute, with up to 80% of all this blood going through the rapidly contracting muscles. This necessitates a very high lung artery blood pressure of 140mm Mercury pressure units, or roughly 3.5 times the pressure which is reached in a human sprinter or a greyhound. The galloping horse will inhale around 2,200 litres of air per minute into its lungs, breathing at 120-140 times per minute (from a resting rate of 8-12 breaths per minute) with a volume of around 15 litres per breath at an air flow rate of nearly 70 litres per second in and out of its lungs. The blood delivers around 70 litres of oxygen per minute or a VO2 max of 165mL of oxygen per kg bodyweight per minute, with 80% of the energy still produced by aerobic metabolism of muscle glycogen and fat stores. The horse will contribute around 30 litres of carbon dioxide to greenhouse gasses. The muscle energy metabolised produces large volumes of heat, which over the 3,200 metre race equates to enough heat energy to boil 28 litres of cold tap water during the 3 min race time. The leading foreleg is loaded by the total weight of the horse and jockey at the gallop, momentum and centrifugal force. When leaning over around the final bend at Flemington, the leading foreleg will be loaded with around 5,000 kg weight at the vertical phase of the stride. The racehorse’s body temperature will be increased to around 41C and hoof temperature to 42-43C and tendon temperature to 45C by the end of the race. The horse will ‘burn up’ around 20% of its total muscle energy stores during the race.

03.01.2022 PLEASE Click in Link , do quick survey before Dec 31 , 2017 and Share. DPI is asking horse owners their opinion of whether or not they are in favour of mandator...y ID (through microchip) of horses - with details maintained on a central data base. Such a system would help bring the equine industry in line with other animal industries, along with assist in disease outbreaks, theft and ownership disputes, welfare and neglect cases. Thank you . 03.01.2022 Have you ever had to decide to refer a horse for colic surgery? Have you ever thought about what you would do if you had to make that choice at short notice? St...aff at the Camden Equine Centre, University of Sydney are conducting a survey into owner knowledge and attitudes toward colic surgery. We are investigating if there are trends between the owner demographics and previous experience with colic, and whether owners elect to send horses for emergency surgery. This may help future veterinarians better understand how they can support horse owners whilst they make this difficult decision. This results from the survey will hopefully allow for better insights into the horse owners’ understanding of outcomes of colic surgery and lead to the development of better information resources for owners. The survey consists of about 20 questions and should only take about 20 minutes of your time. To complete the survey and to learn about a project, please go to: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=C8CMC4MXXL To learn more about the project and for a full participant information statement, please go to: https://colicsurvey.weebly.com/
