Sensing change was in the air we packed the family up and enjoyed a Winter day at our favourite beach. Am so glad we did...memories to get us through the next six (?!?) weeks of lockdown. ... I’m too sentimental for a seasonal flower farmer as I feel a real sense of heart-break when the flowers come to an end and the seasons change. C'mon on Geelong, wouldn't it be lovely if local florists stood strong against this trend of dyed, painted flowers & foliage, and instead protected & supported local flower farmers, the environment & workers/ florists health PLUS the health of the recipients of the preserved flowers? Because of limited imports of flowers from overseas at the Melbourne Flower Markets, many are resorting to selling you imports of dyed & preserved substitutes instead of sourcing flowers grown locally. Sure, this trend will disappear, but so will the local flower farmers.... Interested to hear your thoughts.

15.01.2022 SUSTAINABLE GIFT IDEAS Gifting from the kitchen. I love this idea, especially around Christmas when eating is a pastime that lasts for days. Last Christmas I made huge meringues with swirls of pink colouring through the gorgeous white puffs. Another idea is golden toffee, wrapped in colourful ribbon and a tool made specifically for creating sweet shards of deliciousness...you’ll be the star of gifting! I love to collect tins and purchase chocolates just for the tin...... ...they’re very precious and make wonderful packaging for foods. Use dried flowers or old scarves as an extra adornment, giving your gift a personal touch. 13.01.2022 ORCHIDS -/// Five years ago I invested in quite a few orchids. I love them, but then I learnt that they were imported & can easily bring unwanted pests and diseases into Australia. So I’ve cared for these like children & each year they delight me. We’re lucky to have a warm and light-filled home where they flourish, though I need to learn how to re-pot them soon as they’re ready for a larger area. In fact the white one has produced a new plant which has also flowered. ... I vow to only purchase plants grown in Australia, just like my flowers. 12.01.2022 DAHLIA (help please) ******** Highlighting my favourite Dahlias from last year, of course the beautiful creamy Cafe au Lait is on top, however this beautiful open-faced Dahlia is second. She is larger than my hand (and I have BIG hands, my friends, not very lady-like but GREAT for holding bouquets ) and each time I saw this beauty she just made me smile. ... I’m currently planting her seeds to see what can Mother Nature can surprise me with. PS any Dahlia experts out there who can tell me her name?!?

ABC's Landline recently ran a story on the huge amount of flower imports that have, and continue to, flood the Australian wholesale flower markets, florists & supermarkets. Finally a conversation has begun to create awareness of how local flower farmers are working hard to get back into their own industry. It's not as easy as it sounds. Do you know that, as a local flower farmer, I'm unable to get into Geelong's Newtown Farmers Market or even my local Barwon Heads Market? The flower industry is worth a huge amount..it's controlled by wealthy importers, but the importance of getting the conversation started and into the public realm is priceless! Remember to ask your local florist 'where do these flowers come from?'. See if they know the name of the grower, or how far the flowers have travelled? Are they covered in chemicals or pesticides?

08.01.2022 Ahhh the weekend. It’s been so busy, I really feel the need to sleep in, but at the same time I can’t stand missing the mornings. Mornings are when I feel the most positive, that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, so I love to spend the time planning, writing lists and feeling full of inspiration. By lunch I feel ok, but by 1 or 2 in the afternoon my energy levels dip and, if I’m tired, I can easily feel a little down. ... The older I get, the better I can manage these feelings, but it’s nice to have the flowers to keep me busy, even if it is to pull out a few weeds or watch one of the chickens clucking around. I’m so glad Winter is finished, the lighter days feel good and the extended afternoons make the day manageable. Is it just me, or do you have a favourite time of the day?

01.01.2022 HIDDEN PERFECTION ************** The beauty of our flowers growing here at Bella Flora Farm are hidden amongst rows of ugly fencing covered in thick waist-high grass. Rabbits took over the beautiful Bellarine Peninsula decades ago and the struggle to keep a pretty garden or beautiful flowers without fencing has been a waste of time & money. I’ve always dreamed of rows & rows of beautiful flowers that tourists could walk through or photographers could style their shoots among...st. My frustration of dealing with rabbits for almost a decade has been costly and something I struggle with daily...especially when neglectful neighbours’ properties provide rabbits with a welcome habitat. Recently, my husband & I decided to have one last real go at ridding our property of the grey, twitchy-eyed vermin. We’ve consulted others in the same predicament, as well as local environmental groups & made a plan to tackle it together...it will take a few months BUT it’s the first step towards opening up our farm to visitors, to flower courses and maybe some floral art classes. Will keep you in the loop. & = no go!

01.01.2022 KYLIE IS US ********* This week I’ve been thinking of Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert who has been held in an Iranian prison since Oct 2018. Kylie was a lecturer at the University of Melbourne & was attending an academic conference in Iran before her arrest. She is just like you and me but has had her freedom taken from her...can you imagine?!? She’s been sentenced to 10 years for espionage. ... I think of her often as I walk through the flowers and hope that one day she’ll have the chance to again walk through her own garden. I feel fortunate to have my flower farm, and often wonder how can I help her?!? I’ve a background in govt advocacy, but maybe my flowers are more effective? It can’t hurt to try. These Love in Mist are for her; Kylie is not forgotten, sure, it’s a small gesture, but many small thoughts can make a difference.
