25.01.2022 A busy day for our unit today. Here is another one of our call outs. Great effort today team.
23.01.2022 So the rain is coming and you prepare by getting some sandbags. Have ever wondered what the next step is? How do you actually prepare your property? We will be sharing some simple steps over the coming days to help you prepare your property. Step 1 - Bag It!... Use some plastic sheeting at doorways in combination with sandbags. Don't forget to leave at least one door that allows access in and out. You may also need to protect other gaps such as the weep holes at the bottom of a brick wall. Stay Tuned for Step 2
23.01.2022 Damaging winds and thunderstorms will reach much of the state on Monday night and Tuesday morning, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Average winds of 60-7...0 km/h and peak gusts of up to 100 km/h, affecting Warrnambool, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wonthaggi and Bacchus Marsh. Prepare your home and yard, if possible, and avoid parking or walking under trees. More info here: http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/index.shtml?ref=hdr
22.01.2022 As Australia’s largest road rescue network, our volunteers experience the first-hand effects of unsafe driving. This National Road Safety Week, make the pledge to drive safely on our roads. Because everyone has the right, to get home safe More info: https://roadsafetyweek.com.au/
21.01.2022 Due to the nature of COVID-19, in recent times we’d taken a break from face-to-face skills maintenance and training to focus only on responding to emergencies. Emergency services as a permitted industry are able to conduct critical training and exercising under the directions, as endorsed by the Victorian Chief Health Officer. This week our volunteers were back at training and following all the COVIDSafe principles, wearing masks and working hard to ensure we are there for ...our community. Training this week was focused on preparation for the expected increase in spring rainfall which could cause flooding. A small group took part in sandbagging and lighting. The rest of the unit continued online training looking at our local flood risks and emergency management planning arrangements for flooding.
20.01.2022 At VICSES one of our values is We are part of our community. Ambulance Victoria has captured this so well in this video. Thank you to our wonderful community. #WeWorkAsOne
20.01.2022 Flooding does not only happen at major rivers. Flash flooding can occur on roads, built up areas and rural area as a result of heavy rainfall. They can happen quickly and you may not receive an official warning. Flash flooding can occur in our local areas so keep up to date on local conditions. You can stay informed by monitoring forecasts, river levels and weather warnings at the Bureau of Meteorology website - bom.gov.au
19.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what these signs are for beside the road? These signs are located on Portarlington-Queenscliff Road where Yarram Creek flows under the road. Signs such as these are used to indicate the depth of the water in the event of flooding and can sometimes (but not always) be installed in locations which are known to flood. Some markers may also indicate a height the water level may have reached in previous floods, although these particular ones do not.
19.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology has officially confirmed a La Nina meaning we can expect a wetter than average spring. VICSES has been busy preparing in the event that flooding occurs from the increase in rain. We urge the community to prepare their property. 17.01.2022 Join us here https://youtu.be/uleE9Xps2NY from 10am today for a virtual National Police Remembrance Day (Victoria) ceremony as we remember those who have dedi...cated their lives to community safety. Download the digital service booklet https://go.vic.gov.au/nwPHs6 Each year on 29 September, we pause to remember fallen police employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The service will remember and honour the lives the 23 Victoria Police officers, Protective Services Officers, Police Custody Officers, Victorian Public Service staff and Police Chaplains who died between 29 September 2019 and 29 September 2020. This includes Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Josh Prestney and Constable Glen Humphris who were tragically killed in the line of duty on the Eastern Freeway in Kew on 22 April 2020. Their dedicated service to the community is respected, and they will never be forgotten. #NPRD2020
16.01.2022 Are you ready for an emergency? The Australian Red Cross have developed an app to help you prepare for all types of emergencies whether it be storms, floods, fire or other sorts of emergencies. Download the app and take some time to make a plan now before an emergency happens.
15.01.2022 Like all emergencies we encourage community members to download the Vic Emergency App and set up a watch zone to ensure they receive community notifications and warnings.
15.01.2022 That's a lot of stuff to remember to take with you.
13.01.2022 An early start to the day for the crew this morning. Timely reminder that it doesn't have to be windy for tree branches to fall. Stay safe everyone.
12.01.2022 During storm events we get called to trees that have come down on roads or blocking access. We have a range of tools such as chainsaw and polesaw. We even have hand saws (Yes believe it or not we sometimes just use handsaws, depending on the size of the branch).
09.01.2022 A timely reminder now there is more traffic on the roads.
09.01.2022 Grass pollen season is here, bringing an increased risk of asthma, hay fever and the chance of Thunderstorm Asthma. Learn how to help protect yourself from the... risk of Thunderstorm Asthma https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/thunderstormasthma To find out how to access Thunderstorm Asthma info on the VicEmergency app and website, watch this video: https://youtu.be/cLrzlt2IK3I
07.01.2022 Protecting your home during flooding Step 3 - Lift It! Lift as many items up as high as you can to protect from flood water that may enter your home. Place things on tables and bench tops where you can. Don't forget safe lifting techniques and ask a friend to assist for heavier items! Stay Tuned for Step 4.
04.01.2022 Understand the local flood history in your suburb or township. There are a number of Local Flood Guides for at-risk townships across the State on the VICSES website at www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready/your-local-flood-information where you can get to know your local risk profile, potential impact areas and how a flood might behave in your local area.
04.01.2022 Using sandbags to protect you home Step 2 Block It ! Drains that allow waste water to leave your home can become an entry point for water during flooding. Sinks, basins, showers, laundry troughs, toilets and even the sewer overflow drain outside your home all need to be blocked. But remember always put the sandbag in a plastic bag when blocking drains. Stay Tuned for Step 3
04.01.2022 VICSES is preparing for what could be a very wet Spring. Our catchments are already wet in some parts of the state with recent flood warnings issued for the Barwon River which briefly reached minor flood level in Geelong at the end of August. After the rain from last weekend the water level in local streams, dams and other water sources has risen. Some localised flooding occured over the weekend which impacted some roads.... Take note to never drive on flooded roads. We know the number one cause of death during flooding is people attempting to drive through floodwater. It can take just 15 cm of water to float a small car. That’s the height of an average pen. Stay safe by never entering floodwater!
03.01.2022 Some storm damage can be preventable if you take the steps to prepare your home. This week, why not take the time to clean your gutters, downpipes and drains to remove debris and leaf litter to prevent blockages. More info on storm preparedness via our website: www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready/stormsafe
03.01.2022 We have had a request for the information on when to call SES in other languages. Thanks to the SES Broadmeadows Unit we have a translation for Greek & Italian. We will hopefully have an arabic translation soon. Please feel free to share these among your networks.
02.01.2022 Knowing what to do with flooding Step 4 - Leave! Once you have done all you can to protect your property move everyone to higher ground. Remember never to drive through floodwater so make sure you leave before roads are cut off by floodwater. Stay tuned to your local emergency broadcaster and download the Vic Emergency App to stay up to date on local conditions or visit the website https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/
01.01.2022 Yesterday was quite a windy day. Crews were called to a tree down on the road late in the afternoon. The tree was loaded with gum nuts which pose a slip hazard for crews so extra care needs to be taken to ensure the safety of crews. The tree was cleared safely by our volunteers.
