25.01.2022 WHEELCHAIR FOR MOLLY We have just received a mini dog wheelchair for little Molly the 2kg Miniature Poodle. She has recently had her L rear leg amputated and has had major surgery on the other 3 legs. Although she loves being carried around in her basket, we are going to give her back some independence. We will post an update with a video when she has got the hang of driving.
24.01.2022 "CRUNCHIE" - MYSTERY SOLVED!! Crunchie the 11yo Kelpie cross had a long history of off and on abdominal pain. A few weeks ago she came in for a routine dental procedure where blood tests were taken, the tests showed some changes in her liver. Crunchie returned a few days later for x-rays of her liver and abdomen. At first the images appeared normal but on close inspection there were about 10 fine white lines which were present on a number of different radiographic views. Wh...en we zoomed in they appeared to be fine metal wires. Crunchie was taken into surgery and after many intra-operative radiographs the fine metal wires were located and removed. Only 1 wire remained which had migrated deep into a liver lobe. The wires had been swallowed by Crunchie a long time ago (years) and had worked their way out of her gut and migrated to different areas of her abdomen. The wires were identified as coming from a wire brush. The only logical explanation was that the wire brush was used to clean a BBQ and the broken wires and BBQ waste was ingested by Crunchie. As you can see but the photos the wires were extremely fine and very sharp. We are pleased to say that Crunchie has made a full recovery and she is feeling better than ever. See more
24.01.2022 TOBY'S LATE NIGHT BREAK ! Toby the 12 week old Cattle dog cross had a nasty fall late at night and was taken to an emergency centre. He was x-rayed and found to have not only a nasty fracture, he also had longitudinal cracks length ways along the shaft of the tibia. The following morning Toby was transferred back to Bellbowrie Vet Surgery so the fracture could be repaired. Luckily all the damage was away from the growth plates of the bone so it was decided to place a plate so that the fracture could be aligned and the screws could also apply compression across the longitudinal cracks. It has now been a week since Toby had his surgery and he is using the leg normally but his exercise will be restricted for the next few weeks.
23.01.2022 BILLY GOES HEAD TO HEAD! Billy, the 8 year old Labrador cross was chasing the ball at the park when another dog decided to chase it too, resulting in a head clash with a huge impact. Billy's 2 incisor teeth were snapped off and his large canine tooth, premolar tooth and a large amount of gum and bone were left hanging in his mouth. He was admitted and anaesthetised, the roots of the incisor teeth were removed. The large canine tooth with bone and gum were put back into position and secured in place with a temporary orthodontic appliance across the palate and the torn gum was sutured. Dental acrylic (blue) was used to attach the appliance to the teeth and to protect his tongue. After 3 and a half months Billy's mouth has completely healed, the appliance has come off and his teeth are solid and healthy (last photo)
22.01.2022 DELILAH THE DUCK LOSES A TOE! Delilah the 7 month old Pekin Duck was attacked by a fox a few months ago. Her wounds were treated and she made a quick recovery, unfortunately the bite on her toe lead to a bone infection that destroyed the middle joint and a large amount of bone. (see x-ray) The decision was made to amputate the damaged toe as it was an ongoing source of pain and the structure of the joint was completely gone. Delilah was placed under general anaesethetic and the toe and webbing was amputated. The toe was sent for histopathology and osteomyelitis was confirmed as the cause. She made a very swift recovery and is back doing all the things that ducks do! The final photo was taken today, 4 weeks post surgery.
22.01.2022 Congratulations Buddy and Bella. Bella had 14 puppies last night! They came in this morning to get checked over. Mum and puppies are all healthy.

21.01.2022 BOSSY'S BLOCKAGE! "Bossy" the 2 year old Bull Arab was presented to the surgery after hours with lethargy and vomiting. An X-ray quickly picked up a dense mass in his abdomen that definitely should not be there! The smooth round foreign body was caught in his small intestine. He was immediately taken into surgery and the mystery mass was removed. In less than 2 hours Bossy was admitted, had blood tests, X-rays and abdominal surgery and had recovered from anaesethetic enough to go for a small walk. The solid glass foreign body was part of a decorative garden ornament that had fallen into the garden bed.
19.01.2022 PEEWEE'S NIGHTMARE !! Peewee the 14 week old Pekingese cross was rushed into the surgery late last night after he got caught in the motor mechanism of an electric adjustable bed. Peewee was asleep under the bed when the owner clicked the button to move position. Peewee's fur was pulled into the screw mechanism of the motor, followed by his skin. He and the owners were obviously distressed; he was so tightly wound onto the mechanism they had to unbolt the motor with Peewee att...ached and head to the surgery. Peewee was in shock and in severe pain, it was clear that this was not going to be solved easily so Peewee was anaesthetised with the motor still attached. The motor was then turned in reverse until his skin and fur were released. After shaving the area to investigate the damage we were surprised to see that he had not sustained any serious injuries. After spending the night in hospital Peewee was excited to be reunited with his family. The pic is of Peewee about to go home with his tail wagging vigorously! See more
19.01.2022 MISTY'S MISHAP !! Misty the 10 Month old domestic short hair cat was rushed into the surgery with a very nasty fracture of her right tibia and fibula 4 months ago. Misty's owners were happy to try to save her leg rather than amputate. In order to plan the surgery a radiograph of her other tibia was taken and a life size image was printed out. The fracture lines were marked on this image and the plate was pre-shaped to fit the contour of the bone, as the leg was a mirror imag...e of the fractured leg.(pic #2) The surgery was performed the next day and due to the complex nature of the fracture Misty was restricted to cage rest for 6-8 weeks. Gradually she was given full run of the house and now she is back to using the leg 100%. The 3rd image is of the radiograph taken last week and the leg has healed enough that she can now be let back outside to run and jump. The final pic is of Misty relaxing at home. See more

17.01.2022 HEAT STRESSED RINGTAIL POSSUM. This adolescent Ringtail possum was rescued today when he was found wandering across the road. As he was cooled down under the hose he lapped at the water on his fur. Apart from the heat stress he had blistered the pads on his feet from the hot road. He also found it very soothing resting his feet on an ice brick. The possum has now gone to a carer until his feet have healed. Please keep a look out for our native wildlife during this heatwave.
16.01.2022 Here are some cute pics to remind us of how beautiful or native wildlife is. This little possum was brought in today after being rescued and will head off to a special wildlife carer.

12.01.2022 RAT LUMP!! Rats are becoming more popular as pets, and as with all other animals from time to time they may need to see a Vet to have their health checked. "Millie" is 19 months old and had a nasty lump growing on her chest wall. Today she had surgery to remove the lump, the fist pic shows the extent of the mass. "Millie" has her head in a custom fitted anaesthetic mask so she can breath a mixture of Isoflurane and oxygen to keep her asleep for the operation. The following pics show the extent of the wound and "Millie" tucked up in bed waking up after the surgery, and the sizeable lump.

The K-Laser is a class 4 photobiomodulation therapeutic laser. We purchased the laser in June but due to Queensland Health regulations we have patiently waited to get 3 separate licences to use the laser. The laser is a painless, drug free, non-surgical option to treat pain and speed up tissue healing. Some common conditions that the laser treats... are: Shoulder/Back/Knee pain, Hip Dysplasia, Osteoarthritis, Wounds, Tendon/Ligament injuries, Muscle strains, Nerve/Spinal injuries, Ear infections and even Kidney/Bladder diseases. Our first patient to be treated with the laser was "Oscar" the Dachshund, he is receiving treatment for an ongoing spinal injury. He will have 6 sessions over the next 3 weeks. He was so well behaved while wearing his protective doggles today during his first session. See more
09.01.2022 MELODY'S MISFORTUNE !! Melody the 5yo Conure was in the nesting mood when she accidentally caught her leg in a nylon strand she had pulled out of her nesting box. In the struggle to free herself the nylon became so tightly bound that the circulation was cut off to her left leg, She also tore all the ligaments in her knee. Melody was given pain relief and assessed, but with the extensive damage to the leg and the circulation cut off for so long, the only option was to amputate.... To complicate matters, the egg that she was trying to lay had become stuck in he pelvic canal and was unable to be passed. She was given an anaesethetic with a custom made mask and the leg was removed and the egg was carefully extracted. The final pic is of Melody 1 hour post surgery sitting back in her cage. It has now been 3 weeks since her ordeal and she is as happy as ever. See more
07.01.2022 ORPHAN WALLABY! This healthy, beautiful female wallaby was brought in this morning after a motorist saw an adult wallaby deceased on the side of the road. The man pulled over to check if there was a Joey in the pouch. He took the Joey home and kept her warm in a makeshift pouch. She arrived at the surgery and after a full examination was given the all clear and sent to a specialised macropod carer where she will be cared for until she is ready to be released. Please keep an eye out for injured wildlife and if possible, safely check if they have a baby and seek veterinary help ASAP.
06.01.2022 The Lace Monitor from last week was released today. Take care little fella!
05.01.2022 LUCKY BUDDY!! (CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES) Buddy the 11 year old Jack Russell cross was attacked by a much larger dog while sunning himself in his own backyard. He was rushed to a local vet and was treated but unfortunately his healing was not going as expected. Two weeks after the initial attack Buddy was brought from Hervey Bay to Bellbowrie Vet Surgery for reconstructive surgery on his chest wall and skull (see pics). The huge deficit in his chest wall skin was a challenging ...prospect to repair, special "sliding skin graft" techniques were performed and the feat of maintaining good blood supply while covering the deficit was achieved. He had also sustained a depressed skull fracture that was applying pressure to the back of his right eye, that was repaired at the same time as the skin graft surgery. Buddy stayed with us for 2 weeks before he went back home. The first photo is of Buddy back at home 5 weeks after he first came to Bellbowrie Vet Surgery. He is a fantastic little fellow and is extremely happy to be back home sunning himself again. See more

04.01.2022 XENA'S THYROID MASS!! "Xena" a 12yo domestic cat was presented with a very large lump in her neck, The mass was causing her difficulties with eating and breathing. The owner agreed to surgery to remove the mass and was aware of the risks involved due to the close association to many vital structures of the neck. Xena went into surgery and the mass was carefully separated from the surrounding tissues including the large Vagus nerve (see pic) which the mass had grown around. The mass was sent off for histopathology and a diagnosis of "Cystic Thyroid Adenoma" was made. The mass was cleanly removed and Xena has been cured from this terminal condition. The first pic was taken yesterday when she returned to have her sutures removed, she is definitely feeling much happier without the mass pushing on her throat.

03.01.2022 NERO'S MIRACLE RECOVERY Two weeks ago, Nero the 18 month old Kelpie cross was hit by a car traveling at 70km/hr. He was rushed to Bellbowrie Vet Surgery with very serious injuries. He was stabilised and radiographs were taken to determine the extent of his injuries. X-rays confirmed that he had massive bleeding in his chest and and 2 collapsed lung lobes, fractured right femur, fractured mandible and the tip of his tail had been torn off. He also had a brain injury with neur...ological deficits. After 48 hours he was stable enough to undergo surgery to repair the fractured leg, mandible and have the tip of his tail amputated. Nero stayed in hospital for a few more days after his surgery and he returned today to have his staples/sutures removed. It is now 2 weeks since the accident and the owners are very happy that he is back to normal. He will still have to be restricted from vigorous exercise for another 4-6 weeks. The plate on his leg will stay in place but the wires in his jaw will be removed in another 4 weeks. See more

02.01.2022 GRACIE'S EYE EMERGENCY Gracie the 2 year old domestic short hair was presented with a disturbing eye emergency where deep lesions on the cornea of both eyes had resulted in a rupture. This is a rare condition called "Bullous Keratopathy" where layers of the cornea bubble and start to fill with fluid until they pop like an overinflated balloon. The cause of this condition is not clear but it may be linked to a flare up of cat flu that Gracie was suffering at the time. In orde...r to try to save her vision she was taken into surgery where the bubbled layers of the cornea were carefully shaved off and a supporting flap of third eyelid tissue was sutured across both eyes. The flaps were left in place for 4 weeks which left Gracie without any vision for that time, she was also on oral and topical medications. When the sutures were removed and the flaps were released we were pleasantly surprised by the healing that had taken place. As you can see by the before and after photos Gracie's eyes are now back to near perfect condition. Pics 1 and 2 were taken before surgery and pic 3 was taken 2 days after the flaps were removed.
