05.01.2022 ? Worldwide we are experiencing lock down situations due to COVID-19. With this more and more pet parents are finding themselves spending most of their time at home. Whilst spending more time with our pets has been amazing, we have to look to the future and put in parameters NOW, to avoid our pets feeling it when it all goes back to normal. ... How do you think your pet will cope when you go back to work after spending weeks on end at home? Is your pet prone to separation related behaviours currently? Has your pet been attached to you like velcro? It is inevitable that some pets will cope with the drastic change of separation more than others. Pets that are used to working from home pet parents, or owners whose routine varies from day to day. Or perhaps pets with a little bit more confidence than others. But how can you set your pet up for success when you return back to work? Start by keeping their routine the same. If you normally get up, shower, get ready and go for a walk before work, continue to do all those things. Keeping your routine will also help you stay sane during this crazy time. Allocate time for your pet to be alone and away from you as they normally would. This may mean outside time, crate or pen time. Don’t overkill the affection and love. Naturally we all look to our pets for love and support and right now it’s needed. But keep in mind that our pets don’t understand that we are in a pandemic and when that goes away they probably won’t understand why. Use the time at home to train independence and confidence. This is a golden opportunity to work on the things you didn’t have time for when you were at work. Ultimately, it’s important to starting thinking about it NOW. We don’t know when this horror show will be over, but let’s be active about it, instead of reactive. This will ensure we alleviate issues down the track.
