23.01.2022 HOSTED BY BELLERIVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY You are invited to a Meeting with Robert Hadler, author of Dark Secrets Wednesday March 10 at 7.30 pm... at Alma's, the large stone building 17/19 Alma Street, Bellerive In his latest book, Dark Secrets, Robert deals with the shocking murder of John Joseph Riley of Bellerive, a 19 year old sailor on HMAS Australia, flagship of the Royal Australian Navy in the Coral Sea in March 1942. He covers the military investigation and the court martial where two sailors were found guilty and sentenced to death. The ensuing legal and political ramifications resulted in the signing of the Statute of Westminster by King George VI. He also describes the efforts of the convicted men's families to have their sentences commuted and the burden of grief borne ever since by the Riley family. Due to Covid-19 restrictions it is imperative reservations are made. Please phone acceptances to Ken Williams by March 3 on 0407 979 469

21.01.2022 Hobart Town(1804) First Settlers Association Inc marked the 216th anniversary of the landing by Lieut. Governor David Collins and party on Thursday 20th February. BHS representatives Sally Shorrock and Mike Geard attended with Mrs Gwen Hardstaff, president of HTFSA giving a very interesting account of James Meehan, the surveyor in the first formal survey in VDL in 1806-07 and in 1812, surveyed the Kangaroo Bay area near Bellerive. The Meehan Ranges are namef after the former convict. The mayor of Clarence Doug Chipman represented Clarence City Council and the Hon. Elise Archer MP Attorney General represented the Premier of Tasmania. John Wise and Kevin Daley were the re-enactment members.

21.01.2022 Very interesting talk by Colin Dennision talking on shopfronts of Hobart in the 1930's and 40's showing some of the 130,000 photo's he has stored at the University of Tas. Lot's of memories stirred by members.

20.01.2022 As expected no meeting again this month but when getting your daily exercise there are many welcoming smiles in Bellerive and surrounds Keep safe everyone.

18.01.2022 Pleasing to see this headline considering the 500 books only went on sale at the Sorell Mitre 10 booklaunch on 12 October 2019. If you haven't got your copy by now suggest getting along to Bellerive News soon.

18.01.2022 I found this on Tasmanian History. Please comment on Tasmanian History rather than below.

15.01.2022 The pier/breakwater grows in Kangaroo Bay just off the carpark. The pier will extend out 105m into the bay and will be 2.5m wide with seating and lighting

12.01.2022 Next meeting is on Wednesday 4th March at 7:30 pm in Bellerive Community Arts Centre, 17 Cambridge Road, Bellerive. Jayde Richardson will be talking about her successful campaign swimming the English Channel.

12.01.2022 Plenty of activity happening in Kangaroo Bay with the decking on the boulevard being replaced, the yacht club building their dinghy shed along Cambridge Road and the breakwater still being built

11.01.2022 Interesting topic for tonight's Council meeting - 11.5.2 VICTORIA ESPLANADE AND KANGAROO BLUFF RESERVE MASTER PLAN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PURPOSE To consider reallocating capital funds to develop a holistic Victoria Esplanade and Kangaroo Bluff Reserve Master Plan which references the City Heart and incorporates a Cultural Precinct viewpoint. Council has funds totaling $390,700 currently allocated to Victoria Esplanade and the Landscape Plan. These funds can be reallocated to the Master Plan development process. Following adoption of the Master Plan, it is estimated approximately $144,700 of these funds will be available towards implementation of Stage 1. See the agenda for further information.

10.01.2022 Great night at Alma's on Thursday to celebrate 30th anniversary of Bellerive Historical Society with book launch of Magical Memories by John Sargent, musical entertainment and awards to members with meritorious service.

09.01.2022 Stormwater discharge from the oval side of the Bay is building up.

09.01.2022 So lucky to have excellent guest speakers at our monthly meeting including Rosie Severs talking about John Lee Archer last month and this past week Jayde Richardson from Geilston Bay telling the lucky members present of her experience in swimming the English Channel last year - what an achievement, 34 kms in 12 hours and 9 minutes.

08.01.2022 A photo update on three Kangaroo Bay projects currently underway, the pier/breakwater, new decking on the boulevard and the dinghy shed for the yacht club.

07.01.2022 Just read on Bellerive Community Group f/b page - VALE Dal Hyland A wonderful person who has given so much to this community. You will be missed. Our sympathies to Kathleen and your family.... Lesley Graham Dal was deservedly 2020 Clarence City Council Citzen of the Year.

06.01.2022 Unfortunately, our guest speaker Jayde Richardson cannot make this Wednesday night's meeting due to work commitments but the good news is we have rescheduled for her to attend later in the year, possibly June. In Jayde's place we will have Kathy Fazackerly doing her long awaited session on our facebook page and we will be discussing our planned 30th Anniversary celebrations including a concert at Rosny Barn and a cocktail party at Government House. All welcome

06.01.2022 A committee meeting was held last week and it was decided to NOT hold a meeting in July. Initially we were advised by Council we could have 20 people in the Community Arts Centre but then OH&S reduced the number to 12 making a meeting impractical. Hopefully we will be good to go in August.

04.01.2022 New display boards have been put up in Baldies Clip Joint at 8 Cambridge Rd in the village which has a selection of books for sale as well as lots of photo's to view. Wayne, Summer, Sue, Kathryn, Melissa and Sharee will only be too happy to give men and ladies a quality styled haircut while you are there.

04.01.2022 The killing of Bellerive boy Jack Riley on HMAS Australia in 1942 by fellow seamen was the subject of a very interesting talk by Robert Hadler at Alma's activities Centre last night. The book DARK SECRETS is an excellent read. Our thanks to Ken Williams, whose father served on the Australia, for organising Robert to talk at our monthly meeting.

03.01.2022 Due to the COVID -19, the Bellerive Historical Society have unfortunately had to postpone our events, meetings and public programs for the short term. We value everyone's health and safety and don't want to risk creating an enviornment where Covid --19 can readily spread to the most at risk population in our community. Please keep safe and we will advise when a resumption is possible.... Mike Geard, President

02.01.2022 Come to our stall in Kangaroo Bay from 9am to 1pm today. Selling produce and books at excellent prices

02.01.2022 I found this on Tasmanian History. Please comment on Tasmanian History rather than below. I have commented there.

01.01.2022 Some wag put a Christmas wish on the ugly fencing in Kangaroo Bay. Having been donated the land by the Will Hodgman's Liberal Government and Doug Chipman's Clarence Council for a charity price, the Chinese petrochemical company is determined to keep out those pesky locals who used to own it.

01.01.2022 The pier/breakwater is certainly taking a long time to complete with no sign that it will be finished any time soon. Just hope the Bay won't suffer further with stormwater discharge, sludge, witches hats and shopping trolleys! The Bay does however appear to be silting up making the use of ferries unlikely in the Bay.

01.01.2022 Interesting letter in The Mercury today by Alison Alexander. UTAS being accused of ignoring Tasmania's history. UTAS are prepared to back a foreign hospitality school in Kangaroo BAY for overseas students but forget about our important Tasmanian history- where is their priority?
