23.01.2022 Peak hour at the buffet!! aka dry lick feeder!! Fortunately we received rain earlier this year, however things have dried out considerably since. 12mm last weekend which we are very grateful for! We had @timlawrence6889 spend 2 days in the yards measuring each sheep at the C site, which is between the 2nd last & last rib to give individual information on the fat & eye muscle depth for each animal. This data will be submitted to #sheepgenetics for analysis along with with their birth, weaning & post weaning weights collected to date! The data will be analyzed and generate individual ASBVs (Australi...an Sheep Breeding Value). 12.01.2022 Scanning! Today we preg scanned our commercial #dorper & #whitedorper #ewes. The #rams went in on the 18th of March for 35 days, with 2% rams. We timed preg testing so that ewes with multiple #lambs could be identified easily (19 sets of #triplets & 437 sets of #twins)!! Today was 84 days since the rams went in. ... These are the scanning results - 0 = 52 = 0 = 6.3% 1 = 318 = 318 = 38.5 % 2 = 437 = 874 = 52.9% 3 = 19 = 57 = 2.3% Total = 826 ewes Total = 1249 fetuses 1249/826 = 151.2% 1249/774 = 161.3% (not including dry ewes) Now the FUN begins!! Converting scanned fetuses into live weaned lambs. The national mortality rate is less than desirable and something we can all work on improving through management of our flocks. Tough seasonal conditions have proved challenging along with predator management. We recently signed up for Jadon Trompfs Lambs Alive program. All about managing & converting conceived lambs into weaned lambs. So far the course has been really informative, in particular the information around the management of twin (multiple) bearing ewes to really drive productivity & lamb survival! Scanning plays a vital role in this, especially identifying singles & twins. 01.01.2022 Accessorising my lambs!! !! Something I take rather seriously! When I tag twins & theres a ram/ewe combo, I always tag the ram with the lower number... Its just a habit I have, so when I record all the details in my book (20 seconds later ID, weight, ewes tag etc etc) its easy to remember whos who in the zoo!
