25.01.2022 Japanese Culture - Are Tattoos really a Taboo in Japan? Before our last club visit to Japan I started to investigate the question of tattoos and how it might be a problem for one of the parents in our group. As someone who has been visiting Japan since 1982, I had been reliably informed that tattoos were something that were frowned upon in Japan & it would almost certainly prevent said person from enjoying certain activities, such as the wonderful Japanese Onsen (hot spa). ... In this video Shogo Sensei addresses tattoos & what problems, if any, they might cause those they adorn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y-jzaOlRdg

25.01.2022 Fuji Party # Part 2 - Gifts Now I ask you, who in their right mind doesn't like receiving presents? Well 'right mind' or not, I sure as hell do!!! As can be attested to in this pics. ... A lovely collection of gifts to remember 2020 by. Most importantly though was the people who showed-up to help make this a memorable occasion. And at my age anything that helps me remember is most welcome.

18.01.2022 Fuji Party # Part 4 - Time to relax !!! To be honest the party was going great !!!! * Food * Drinks ... * Party Cake * Speeches * Gifts * Club sing-a-long Now it was time to sit back, relax, sip on a coffee, and catch-up with friends, just to see how everyone has been going during these tough C-19 times.

18.01.2022 Let's aim high & train smart.

18.01.2022 Outdoor training for children - Yesterday's training in the park, presented a nice little challenge for the kids. When we arrived early with all the kit, we spotted dogs running about, a fitness class close by, and wondered to ourselves if training outside the normal dojo environment would prove to be A Bridge Too Far. How wrong was I! The kids were fantastic, displaying good levels of concentration and a definite improvement in technique. And the seniors helped out by keeping their eyes on things. So well done Team Fuji!

17.01.2022 Typical Brown & Black training anywhere on the planet. Here on the Coffs Coast our numbers of dan grades & senior kyu may be smaller than in some dojo in 'the big smoke', but our intent is exactly the same. Actually I think it's fair to say, with a degree of humility, that we are doing quite nicely. ... Our Term 4 Black & Brown belt training course is coming along quite soon, so please keep an eye out for that.

15.01.2022 Thoughts about - Kicking aka Keri Waza Kicking exercises will definitely feature in Term 1 training which, according to my calendar, officially 'kicks off' in 25 days time. Before we meet on Monday 1 February, here are some thoughts & ideas about kicking, that are well worth looking at & listening to. ... If you haven't started your post Xmas fitness & stretching routine yet, then please do give it some thought. Start with a walk before you jog, a light stretch, maybe a bike ride, a walk along a beach, some swimming or maybe a visit to the local gym. There's a ton of different ideas to do alone, with the family or maybe another exercise partner. Take care https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw_lS-1kPBo

13.01.2022 JAPANESE CULTURE IN KARATE Appreciating Japanese culture is something that adds a lot to the study of any Japanese Martial Art. Subscribing to 'Let's ask Shogo - Your Japanese friend in Kyoto', will help turn our dojo from a good club into an even better one. ... Please subscribe to Shogo Sensei's channel & join us in the cultural learning experience. In our first video '5 things not to do in Japan', Shogo Sensei offers tips and advice through the eyes of a Japanese. Please watch, enjoy & give it a thumbs up if you like it. Ossu!!!!! P.S. - I am pretty sure of the 5 'things not to do in Japan' I have done all of these & plenty more. Gulp.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JFWKh5leAo

12.01.2022 Kata Heian Nidan - Nakamachi Miki This kata by Nakamachi Sensei is good to learn the sequence. Of particular interest to me though, is the way she ensures she completes each & every technique. I like that she takes no short cuts.... Enjoy. Ossu!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7Ct0jlko0E

11.01.2022 Fuji Party # Part 3 - The 'Sing Song' aka "and you will enjoy yourself" A nice try at a club sing along, but who forgot to mention it was all in Japanese? Or to put it another way. This 'Sukiyaki' was not the one you eat, but the one you sing. Mmmm ... Now come on..... LOUDER..... more feeling !!!!!!!!!

11.01.2022 Saturday chuckle

09.01.2022 Women of Shotokan - # Miki Nakamachi I have kept an eye on Nakamachi Sensei for quite some time, watching her steady progress as a karate Athlete and karate Instructor. I find her interesting because her body type is similar to some western women that I have training at our dojo. Born to a Japanese Mother & American (I believe) Father, I was interested to see how, as a larger female athlete, she approached her karate. Her full, bold movement approach to her kata wonderful to ...see, and soon had her highly competitive against smaller, sharper opponents. I was greatly encouraged by her approach to karate which avoids the 'speed at all cost' method adopted by so many athletes that often results in incomplete movements. Here's her story - https://the-dojo.org//05/14/women-of-shotokan-miki-nakama/

09.01.2022 Sun 8/11 - Change of training venue Monday 9/11 (tomorrow) Hello all members & family. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Let's meet at the music stage area between the tennis courts & the grandstand. Training times - Children 5-6pm / Teens & Adults 5.30-7pm Suggestions: * runners. * hat * water bottle Again apologies but I think this is a character building exercise. So 'when all you have is lemons, let's make lemonade'. Let's enjoy some outdoor training tomorrow. Ossu!! Sensei Francisa & Sensei Wayne

07.01.2022 Delicious Oysters in Japan I don't know why, but when I think about Japan I don't think about oysters. And yet it makes a ton of sense. Japan has a fantastic fishing industry & very high standards with food of all kinds, especially seafood (something essential with producing & selling oysters). Here's a link to the Fukuoka-Now magazine that you may find interesting. ... Enjoy https://www.fukuoka-now.com//itoshima-kakigoya-oyster-hut/

07.01.2022 The various stances of kara-te & why we use them Here's a short video from the very enthusiastic Sensei Jesse, and boy I love this guy's energy. Here he talks about karate stances & how to think about them as a means of delivering power, shifting your weight and so forth.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FQ09GQ4Dsk

06.01.2022 Karate Stretching for improved Flexibility Let's start thinking about our warm-up, warm-down routines to help keep us loose & flexible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnoPm0EfwHY

05.01.2022 Mae geri Jodan - Kagawa Sensei (head of the Shoto-Renmei) is well known for his kicking skills. Fortunatey for his training partners, he not only has Flexibility & Power, he also has excellent Control. Mae geri (My Geh Ree), otherwise known as Front Kick, will be included in our kicking exercises Monday 1st February at St. Margaret's hall. ... Meantime please include safe & controlled Stretching into your exercise routines as you prepare yourself for karate in 2021.

04.01.2022 Brown & Black belts - A karate Demonstration to enjoy This 'demo' filmed at Tokyo's huge Budokan (martial arts hall), features two popular instructors that I travelled overseas to train with, namely Asai Shihan 10th dan & Pemba Sensei 8th dan. In order to train with Asai Shihan and experience his amazing karate, I travelled to Switzerland where he was teaching at a large international training course.... Pemba Sensei, was born in Nepal, completed the instructor training course in Tokyo & escaped for a quiet life in the Japan countryside. Sensei Francisa & I tracked his dojo down in the Japanese Alps around Nagano, where we enjoyed his wonderful training, cooking and socialising. He is a lovely man. Control - Watching this demonstration you could be excused for believing it was all a bit dangerous. And you would be right, it is potentially very dangerous. But actually Control is very much being applied. Yes there may be a few bumps & bruises, but these are 2 very capable karate teachers demonstrating not only Speed, Power. But also incredible Control at a Martial Art festival. Brown & Black Belt training course - When we have our training course in a few weeks time, let's have fun with some of the ideas that I learned from Pemba Sensei & Asai Shihan. Okay? Ossu!!! Sensei Wayne https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFFm7vNMo3s
