16.01.2022 Earlier today QBA received approval to circulate information relating to the recent detection of Varroa jacobsoni/ Asian Honey bees in the Port of Townsville ar...ea. On the 16th and 23rd of April 2020, whilst routine surveillance work was being undertaken by the National Varroa Mite Eradication Program (currently underway in the Townsville region) a detection of Asian Honey bee wings was found in pellets from rainbow bee eater birds. On the 28th of April 2020 a nest of Asian Honey bees was detected in the vicinity of the Port of Townsville area. The nest contained 2,850 bees, no drones or drone comb. Varroa mites were present within the nest. The nest was destroyed and removed for testing. Subsequent testing was carried out by CSIRO and the Queensland Department of Agriculture with a determination made that this recent detection is a new incursion and not related to any other Asian Honey bees previously detected in Queensland. The testing conducted between the two laboratories has confirmed the presence of Varroa jacobsoni. The QBA will continue to liaise with all respective Departments and Agencies involved in the detection and the National Varroa Mite Eradication Program and will provide industry members with updates as they are made available. For beekeepers and members of the public this recent detection serves as a timely reminder to all, that Biosecurity is everyone's business. Should you detect or suspect and exotic pest in Queensland, please contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or alternatively contact the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.
