09.01.2022 Can my pet get infected with COVID-19? The simple answer is: no! (Phew.) COVID-19 is specific to humans, but some coronaviruses do seem to be able to jump betwe...en species. In fact, there are seven known coronaviruses that can infect people. They all originated in animals, and then mutated to be able to infect humans. The two most infamous coronaviruses are SARS and MERS, both of which began as bat coronaviruses before spreading to an intermediate animal (camels and civet cats, respectively), which then spread the virus to humans. Influenza is the only other virus with mutated strains that can jump from birds and pigs to humans. There is one type of coronavirus that infects cats but it’s different in its genetic code from COVID-19. Cats infected with this virus often show no symptoms, but it can cause mild diarrhea. In more drastic instances, it can mutate and lead to the development of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). So, how do these viruses jump from one species to another? To do this the virus needs two things: ability and access. Viruses gain entry into animal cells by binding to receptors on those cells. The part of the virus that binds to the cell (called the S1 sub-unit) can vary considerably and mutate easily in coronaviruses, allowing them to bind to many different mammalian host cells. Access is the easy bit. Contact between species by eating them, or handling them, or in some cases through an intermediate host will facilitate access to a new host. Once inside the cells, the virus rapidly replicates before destroying the cells and spreading outside the host to infect others almost always between the same species. But, once every few years, with the right ability and access, a virus can learn how to jump between species. Can my dog spread Coronavirus to humans? If you’re infected, you can transfer the virus to your dog’s fur if you are near them. Other people may be exposed to the virus if they pet a dog that’s been touched by someone affected by the virus. However, this is not a common way for the virus to spread. You should wash your hands thoroughly before and after petting any dogs. Do not pet dogs you do not know. 06.01.2022 Snakes are starting to wake up from their long winter rest, and our pets are once again at risk! All snake bites or suspected snake bites in Australia should be... treated as life-threatening. It is vital that you keep your pet calm and as still as possible. Try to limit any movement (including walking) as much as possible and transport them to your nearest veterinary practice immediately, even if they look well. If you are not close to a veterinary clinic and the bite was witnessed to have occurred on a limb, apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to that limb before transporting the animal to a veterinarian. The bandage should cover the entire limb, from the paw to the base of the limb. The pressure bandage should not be applied too tight as to restrict blood flow, but at a similar tightness to what would be applied for a sprained ankle. There is no role for a pressure immobilisation bandage for bites that are not on a limb. The sooner your pet is treated, the better their chances of survival. Symptoms of snake bites include: - Sudden weakness followed by collapse - Vomiting - Laboured breathing - Paralysis, starting with the hind legs - Loss of bladder and bowel control - Shaking or twitching of the muscles - Blood in the urine DO NOT try to catch or kill the snake for ID or for any other purpose DO NOT apply a tourniquet DO NOT wash the bite site DO NOT cut, suck or apply any other treatments to the bite-site Our service is free for all pet owners and has assisted over 5,000 accidentally poisoned pets so far this year. You can save a pet’s life by keeping this critical service free. Please visit animalpoisons.com.au/support to learn about ways you can support the service.

06.01.2022 WORMS ! We have all seen the post going around about gut worms in dogs.. Here is a protocol recommended by my vet.. Gastrointestinal worms in dogs can be classified as roundworm, whipworm, hookworm or tapeworm. The only medications that contain treatments for all gastrointestinal worms in the one product are drontal and paragard , as long as your dog is not a hunter of lizards, frogs, geckos, and other small amphibians and reptiles. There are 2 types of tapeworms in dogs. 1.... The flea tapeworm Dipylidium caninum has an intermediate stage in the flea . It will appear as small white beads either around the anus or on the faeces of your dog . If your dog has fleas, it is likely to also have the flea tapeworm. 2. The hunting tapeworm Spirometra erinacei has an intermediate stage in frogs, geckos, lizards, grasshoppers and other small amphibians and reptiles. If your dog regularly hunts and eats any of these creatures , it is likely to have the hunting tapeworm. This may be seen in the vomit or faeces, as long, ribbon-like worms. The standard dosing rates for drontal all wormer and paragard womer, does not treat Spirometra tapeworm. Your dog would need to be given additional tapewormer tablets as the dose to treat the hunting tapeworm is 4 times that needed to treat a dog (or cat) for the flea tapeworm. Simply, if your dog is given Nexgard Spectra monthly, as a matter of completeness we would recommend giving your dog a drontal, paragard or tapeworm tablet every 3 months. If your dog is a hunter, the higher dose of the tapewormer should be given every 3 months.

04.01.2022 Q. How often should I wash my dog? A. Never! Recent studies suggest washing your dog can trigger allergy like symptoms . Brushing is now considered more beneficial to skin health . Of course if your dog has rolled in something stinky you will need to spot wash but just use water when you can. If you have an allergy dog with no diagnosed triggers eliminating the regular dog wash from your routine could make a huge difference worth a try !.
