16.01.2022 Having highlighted Akilas performance at the start of 2016 yesterday, today inevitably we bring a performance from the conclusion of the 2016 season. By that ...time wed picked up the tag as the Leicester City of cricket. Against the odds (in some peoples eyes) wed reached the inaugural Yorkshire Premier Cricket Final staged in the splendour of the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. After a warm up game victory against a local club team we still started the final as second favourites to Bradford League champions Pudsey St Lawrence. No one can win on occasions like that without a whole team effort - and that was the story of the season. However Dave Toft played an innings about which League Chairman Roger Pugh said I have been involved in League cricket for over 40 years now and without hesitation or exaggeration I can say that this was the finest century I have ever seen outside the first class game. Davids cool head, stamina, ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over, and his array of shots, some classical some more improvised were quite outstanding. No further comment needed! Toftys 138 that day merits inclusion in this list in itself. However he did also take 3-63 and caught Pudseys leading run scorer on the long off boundary. So as Roger also said, the adjudicator didnt need to be Einstein to award him the motm! Tofty, now playing for Bell Park Cricket Club Players & Supporters just outside Melbourne, scored over 6700 runs for the club and picked up 77 wickets over 7 seasons. Whilst much has been said and written about Toftys performance in Abu Dhabi (especially by Dave himself) it genuinely was a monumental effort and fully deserving of a place amongst the finest for the club. 14.01.2022 Dragon Update Its been a big couple of weeks at our club and we felt that it was important to let our players, sponsors and supporters know where we are at. We do acknowledge the GCA s decision in finding the club breached the Professional Player rule. Whilst we take full responsibility for what has occurred we also need to be mindful that as a committee we have let down the club. To this extent we are working even harder over the next 12 months to ensure we ge...t back to the position of prominence in Division 2 as soon as possible. You may all be aware we were handed down a number of sanctions and fines. However earlier this week the board appealed the severity of the 2 year Division 3 sanction and were successful in our appeal, so the their original decision for 2 years in Division 3 is now down to one year. I am pleased to advise that our whole playing group is sticking together as we plan for the season ahead in Division 3. The mateship, camaraderie and respect for each other shown at this difficult time shows our true culture at our club. To evidence this, we had 3 of our senior players indicating that they were leaving for another club, but once they found out the GCAs decision, they wanted be help out their mates, stick together as they now believe we have unfinished business. To support this unity within our playing group, our committee has extended Michael Lymers coaching tenure for a further 1 season, so he will now coach the 2021/2022 season. Everybody recognises Michaels achievements at our club both on and off the field and this provides clear stability moving forward. We are also pleased to advise that our new training and storage facility is on target to be ready for the upcoming season. We are expecting works to commence in August and completed by the start of our outdoor training. We look forward to everybodys support this season, both on and off the field, as our united Dragon family move forward as one.
