25.01.2022 Forage Rape Pillar | ! Pillar is an exciting new, fast establishing, high yielding multi-graze giant-type forage rape with strong re-growth potential. When well-managed, Pillar provides high quality, cost-effective forage for beef cattle and sheep. With its deep taproot and swede/turnip resemblance, it is a valuable break crop proving beneficial to soil structure. With its rapid establishment and ready for the first graze in 60-90 days, Pillar is a v...ariety that will provide more feed from later grazings. Extremely important to note, however, is that Brassicas should always be introduced slowly to livestock and with the addition of added fibre in the form of hay, straw or baled silage to lessen the chance of rumen acidosis or bloat. With a crude protein level between 14-20%, the energy level of brassicas is equivalent to high-quality conserved forages. Agronomic Information: Sowing Rates 3-5kg/ha Rainfall 500mm+ Suitable to most soil types Excellent disease resistance watch Diamond Back Moth. 24.01.2022 Sodbuster Radish Developed in New Zealand, this new forage radish has a multitude of application options. It’s large tap roots can penetrate as far as 1.8m deep, plowing and breaking up the hardpan whilst foraging for below ground nutrients. Once the above ground pasture is utilised, the root quickly decomposes, leaving behind aerated soil perfect for water penetration and helping to release nitrogen from the soil. The high levels of Glucosinolate in Sodbuster makes this radi...sh an excellent natural bio-fumigant, which greatly reduces nematode populations. The leaves are exceptionally high in protein, making this radish a great livestock forage option. Agronomic Information: Weed suppressor Prefers sandy or clay soils Sowing rates 3-5kg/ha as a standalone crop or 1-2kg/ha in a blend Order seeds and fertiliser on our website: https://bellpastureseeds.com.au/ Bell Pasture Seeds (08) 9727 2243 [email protected]

22.01.2022 Linseed Linseed is an annual, warm-season broadleaf flowering plant. Linseed or Flax, is often used as a companion crop in warm-season mixtures with the aim of attracting and maintaining pollinators in the orchard throughout the year. By including it in your cover crop or Green Manure mix it gives you the added benefit of building organic matter to then be sown directly back into the ground, attracts pollinators and also attracts insect predators to help keep your orchard...s safe naturally. AGRONOMIC INFORMATION: Suitable for rainfall 400-750mm Linseed grows best in well structured soils, with heavier textured soils preferable to lighter sands. It can tolerate some waterlogging, but should not be sown in the autumn on land that is poorly drained. It will tolerate acidic soils unless the pH values are very low, in which case crops may benefit from lime application. Low nutrient demand Flowering can last 2-4 weeks Use in a cover crop mix at 3-6kg/ha or as a standalone crop sown at 25-50kg/ha Helps mobilise phosphorus in soil Order seeds on our website: https://bellpastureseeds.com.au/ Bell Pasture Seeds (08) 9727 2243 [email protected] #bellseeds #bellpastureseeds #seedgrowers #seedcleaning #seedtreating #argonomist #farmers #seedvarieties

21.01.2022 Buckwheat Buckwheat is a short season, speedy cover crop option. Quick to establish and flower, it is ready to be incorporated within 35-40 days with its residue breaking down quickly, releasing nutrients into the ground for the next crop. Buckwheat is a great suppressor of weeds, attracting beneficial pollinators and insects with its abundant blossoms. Its ability to extract phosphorous from the soil is another added benefit, better than most grain cover crops. Buckwheat’s a...bundant, fine roots leave topsoil loose and friable after only minimal tillage, making it a great mid-summer soil conditioner preceding fall crops in temperate areas. Agronomic Information: Prefers light to medium, well-drained soils: sandy loams, loams, and silt loams Not drought tolerant. Extreme afternoon heat will cause wilting, but plants bounce back overnight Sowing rates 35kg per hectare as a standalone crop or include in cover crop mix. 20.01.2022 Black Mustard Black Mustard is an excellent addition in all cover crop mixes in helping manage soil-borne pathogens. It’s ability to suppress various soil-borne pests and diseases through it’s high levels of glucosinolates, helping to clean up your problem paddocks. Mustard makes a great in-between cover crop that will add much value to the soil. When sown in late spring, it will thrive and smother weeds at the same time. Studies show that live mustard plant tissues, seeds, a...nd roots contain compounds that act as soil biofumigants, killing nematodes and pathogenic fungi. To reap this benefit, mustard must be treated like green manure chopped down and quickly turned under. Once tilled under, the crop adds some nitrogen and lots of organic matter to the soil. Mustards must be plowed under a minimum of three weeks prior to planting a new crop. In order to release their alleopathic chemicals and biofumigants, mustards require rain or irrigation throughout the growing period. Agronomic Information: Sprouts in 3-5 days Sowing rate 4-8kg/hectare as a standalone crop or in a green manure mix Great biomass production & nutrient scavenging ability Rainfall 300mm+ Order seeds and fertiliser on our website: https://bellpastureseeds.com.au/ Bell Pasture Seeds (08) 9727 2243 [email protected]

20.01.2022 BMR Grazing Maize Brown Mid Rib Grazing Maize is probably the biggest advancement in crop breeding since hybrid maize. Unlike sorghums, sudans or millet who all require a minimum soil temp of 15 plus degrees for planting, BMR requires a temp of 10 degrees, allowing planting to happen earlier in the season and consequently feed to be accessible earlier. As corn does not tiller, BMR is a single graze option only, however as a single harvest crop after a cool-season annual forag...e or grain crop, it cant be beaten. Utilize as a summer stockpile forage, providing large amounts of biomass to be grazed well into the winter. Agronomic Information: Sowing Rates 15-25kg/ha Rainfall 600mm+ Requires highly fertile, deep, well-drained soil Frost sensitive Extremely palatable with high nutritional value BMR cultivars improve forage quality and notably increase milk production/productivity. 10.01.2022 MPT Turnip Mammoth Purple Top turnip is a root brassica crop most commonly used for forage. It does well in colder climates. Fast-growing summer fodder crop with excellent feeding value. Its deep taproot creates perfect channels for plant roots to easily follow, making it excellent at taking residual nitrogen and putting it back into the soil. Many turnips can be grazed twice to permit the utilization of top growth and roots. Turnips are a great cover crop to plant between or... before cereal crops. Turnips have high sugar content making them extremely palatable for livestock such as cattle or sheep. They also have high moisture content and are packed with protein making them an excellent choice for winter grazing. Turnips are extremely winter hardy which is a huge advantage if planting in the late Autumn. Agronomic Information: Livestock should not feed on turnip during the breeding season or after the plants have begun to flower. Nitrate nitrogen toxicity can be a problem, especially if ruminants are allowed to graze on immature crops or if soil nitrogen levels are high. The risk may remain for a longer period of time in autumn than in summer To prevent problems with diseases, Brassicas should not be grown on the same site more than two years in a row. If clubroot is a problem, rotation should be six years Turnip grows best in a moderately deep loam, fertile and slightly acid soil. Turnip does not do well in soils that are of high clay texture, wet or poorly drained. For good root growth turnip needs a loose, well-aerated soil Rainfall 600mm+ Sowing Rate 0.5-2kg/ha in a cover crop blend Order seeds and fertiliser on our website: https://bellpastureseeds.com.au/ Bell Pasture Seeds (08) 9727 2243 [email protected] #bellseeds #bellpastureseeds #seedgrowers #seedcleaning #seedtreating #argonomist #farmers #seedvarieties #fertiliser
