06.01.2022 #Repost @champagneandchips with @get_repost In between the Melbourne lockdowns I had dinner with a beautiful friend who also works in wine. I was feeling exhausted, emotional and disconnected. I said I just don’t know if there will still be a place for me in wine after all of this. She replied that my passion and commitment would always have a place - I need the wine world, and it needs me. As case numbers have dropped and my crazy hours in health are whittling away,... I have been thinking about how wine has this incredible way of connecting us, even in a time when connecting is so damn hard. There are a few ways I feel connected... Every couple of weeks I host a wine club at the hospital - supporting a local business, distributors and wineries. It’s such a lovely way of connecting with people (and talking about something other than the pandemic). Tasting wine keeps me connected too. My darling gives me mystery wines to keep me on my toes with blind-tasting. Occasionally there’s video tasting with friends; but gosh I’m hanging to be in the same room, sharing food and wine. Drinking wine made by people I know reminds me of how much meaning a simple (or not so simple) drink can have. And writing reminds me to look for the beauty in the world. I wrote about Sue Bell of @bellwetherwines for a story on sustainability (link in profile) and I have been meaning to try her flagship for some time... 2010 Bellwether Coonawarra Cabernet Mounds of cocoa powder, like you are rolling chocolate truffles and the cocoa dust lingers in the air. Mint tea leaves. Ripe, sun warmed blackberries. The scent of earthy roasted root vegetables. On the palate there’s an interplay of rich cocoa, fresh fruit, mineral earth, a hint of tobacco box and wisps of eucalypt supported by supple tannins. Intensely concentrated and also ethereally elegant. Drinking so beautifully now but I want some more for my cellar. See more
