20.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS Today 9th of March 2020 is a defining day in the pursuit of the Batlow-Tumut Rail Trail Project. At 7.48am this morning I received a phone call ...from the Snowy Valleys CEO Mr Matt Hyde, requesting I meet with him at 3.30pm. At the allotted time I arrived and was met by the CEO and was then directed into the Mayors office. My meeting was with Mr Hyde, but I said I didn’t mind meeting with the Mayor James Hayes and Mr Hyde, but I would only do so if I had a witness. Fellow committee member Bill Masters was soon on site and the meeting commenced; many subjects were covered as well as the recent intense focus on council via social media. But the big news of the day is, the Mayor and the CEO have agreed to have the Batlow-Tumut Rail Trail Project listed in the Dunn’s Road Fire Recovery Plan which is currently being drafted. It is not a guarantee the project will proceed, but it is in the mix to be considered by the final decision makers. We were further informed that in February 2020 Snowy Valleys Council approached local MP Dr Joe McGirr for funds to carry out a rail trail feasibility study and the commissioning of consultants to conduct a business case for the Batlow-Tumut Rail Trail Project. Whilst a feasibility study has already been completed, we most certainly welcome the initiative in having a professionally prepared business case. By close of the hour-long meeting, we are confident many of the issues have been fairly aired and a new era of cooperation will begin. Whilst our committee still have much work to do, we end this post with a new level of enthusiasm and hope that will eventually see a rail trail facility connecting Tumut & Batlow, and a spur trail to Adelong. Phil Barton, Chairperson, Batlow-Tumut Rail Trail. #BuilditforBatlow

15.01.2022 "Zhong Qiu Jie", which is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time for family members and loved ones to congregate and enjoy the full moon - an auspicious symbol of abundance, harmony and luck. Adults will usually indulge in fragrant mooncakes of many varieties with a good cup of piping hot Chinese tea, while the little ones run around with their brightly-lit lanterns. "Zhong Qiu Jie" probably be...gan as a harvest festival. The festival was later given a mythological flavour with legends of Chang-E, the beautiful lady in the moon. According to Chinese mythology, the earth once had 10 suns circling over it. One day, all 10 suns appeared together, scorching the earth with their heat. The earth was saved when a strong archer, Hou Yi, succeeded in shooting down 9 of the suns. Yi stole the elixir of life to save the people from his tyrannical rule, but his wife, Chang-E drank it. Thus started the legend of the lady in the moon to whom young Chinese girls would pray at the Mid-Autumn Festival. In the 14th century, the eating of mooncakes at "Zhong Qiu Jie" was given a new significance. The story goes that when Zhu Yuan Zhang was plotting to overthrow the Yuan Dynasty started by the Mongolians, the rebels hid their messages in the Mid-Autumn mooncakes. Zhong Qiu Jie is hence also a commemoration of the overthrow of the Mongolians by the Han people. During the Yuan Dynasty (A.D.1206-1368) China was ruled by the Mongolian people. Leaders from the preceding Sung Dynasty (A.D.960-1279) were unhappy at submitting to foreign rule, and set how to coordinate the rebellion without it being discovered. The leaders of the rebellion, knowing that the Moon Festival was drawing near, ordered the making of special cakes. Packed into each mooncake was a message with the outline of the attack. On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully attacked and overthrew the government. What followed was the establishment of the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644). Today, moon cakes are eaten to commemorate this event. (https://www.google.com.au//s/kknews./education/6qbo3p.amp)

04.01.2022 A positive meeting with Councillors and construction staff today indicated that all are keen to have the trail completed for the official opening on Friday 3rd ...April this year, despite the horrendous fire conditions we had to start the year. Contracting teams are back in action on bridges, fences and trail construction and are hoping for favourable weather over coming weeks. Meanwhile the official opening committee are hard at work preparing a couple of days of celebrations. So we look forward to seeing a large turnout to welcome the first rail trail in NSW on a former public rail corridor. Stay tuned for further news.
