07.01.2022 Welcome to the THIRD of the Walkabout podcasts produced with the assistance of the Community Broadcast Foundation cbf.org. Made while working in remote communities and highschools on Bunjalung country in the NSW Far North Coast, with the non-profit organization Desert Pea Media in collaboration with North Coast Primary Health Network creating hip hop tracks and music videos based around mental health with indigenous youth in each community. In this edition we head to Yaegl co...untry and arrive in Maclean, a town in the Clarence Valley situated on the river in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. The Yaegl People are the traditional custodians of the coastal areas around Yamba, Iluka and Maclean, having lived in the region for over 60,000 years Of deep cultural significance to the Yaegl people is the island easily visible from the road that runs alongside the clarence river as you drive off the Pacific Highway toward Maclean. At a glance it’s scenic, peaceful and all part of the touristic view but this island holds a much deeper story for the Yaegl mob. In 1904 the island was gazetted as an aboriginal reserve/mission site and became home to most of the local Aborigines living in camps scattered about the fringes of Maclean and Lower Clarence Region During this project Elders passed down knowledge and stories from their time on the island and it had a deep impact on the kids, shaping the lyrical content for the song - Calling into the Deep by the 380 Crew The intention of the podcast is to tell the story behind the lyrics of the song by offering those involved a platform on which to express themselves verbally, via the medium of community radio.
