25.01.2022 Sound familiar? One of the most common causes of bad breath in dogs and cats is dental disease. It affects over 87% of dogs and 70% of cats over three years of age. Thats right, they dont have to be old to have dental issues! Plaque formation is the first sign of dental disease. It will cause gingivitis which, if left untreated will cause irreversible periodontal disease. If periodontal disease is present, your pet will be at an increased risk of problems such as tooth pain..., jaw fractures, and severe organ damage (in particular involving the liver, heart and kidney). What can you do to avoid this? - Book your pet an annual dental check. We can assess their teeth and provide you with a care plan. - Feed your pet a dental diet - Brush your pets teeth daily using a pet toothbrush - Use the help of dental treats, toys, water additives and mouth rinses. https://api-v2.vetcheck.it//fa55ddc7-c164-4155-9501-885f54

22.01.2022 Last week another dog was diagnosed with leptospirosis in Newtown, Sydney. There have now been five cases since May this year and sadly, all dogs have died or were needed to be put to sleep due to the severity of their condition. Spread through contact with infected rat urine, leptospirosis is a bacterial disease of particular significance in that it can infect humans too. There are several different strains of the bacteria but the most recent case was caused by a strain to ...which we have a vaccination for! Protect your pet by having them vaccinated, especially if you are planning a trip to Sydney, and try to limit their contact with potentially infected rodents. Your dog will require 2 vaccinations, 2-4 weeks apart. Protect yourself by thoroughly washing your hands after touching your pet and avoiding contact with their urine. https://www.uvths.com.au/leptospirosis-update/ https://api-v2.vetcheck.it//763642f6-6b0f-4f8a-ae6f-688778

18.01.2022 Spring has sprung... and so too has seasonal allergies in our pets, with at least 1 in 10 dogs affected! Cats and dogs get seasonal allergies which, just like in humans, are triggered by pollens released from flowering plants and grasses during Spring. Watery eyes and runny noses, as seen in people, are less commonly seen in affected pets. Instead, we see ear infections and itching around the face, feet, and belly. While these allergies can not be cured, they can be managed. ...Pets (and their owners) dont have to put up with the constant itching and scratching, which predisposes to things like secondary bacterial infections and "hot spots". How can you help? Close windows to prevent allergy causing pollens from entering the home. Wash your pet in soothing shampoos or wipe their coats down with a damp cloth to remove potential irritants from their fur. Strengthen their skin barrier by supplementing their diets with omega fatty acids or trialling a prescription diet such as DermDefense. If you are still seeing signs of irritation, pop in to see us. We may recommend immunomodulatory medications, antihistamines, or specially formulated topical creams which can help your pet survive Spring time without leaving a trail of fur behind them!

We now have the latest canine cough vaccine that provides best protection against one of the most important causes of the disease so you, and your dog, are less likely to suffer through days and nights like that. Call us on 4945 9044 to make sure your dog is protected today.

17.01.2022 Leptospirosis update 28/08/2020 Attention dog owners! There has been another confirmed case of Leptospirosis this week in a dog that lived in Paddington. Ac...cording to medical records this dog was fully vaccinated against Leptospirosis and sadly had to be euthanised due to kidney failure. The vaccine currently used in the Sydney area provides protection against the strain (serovar) known as Copenhageni which has been identified as the causative serovar in dogs infected last and this year in the Sydney area. In other countries other serovars are involved in clinical Leptospirosis hence different vaccines are used. We are still investigating which serovar has been involved in this most recent case as it may be different from those in previous cases. This is the first case of Leptospirosis seen in Paddington. Earlier this month cases in Crows Nest, Balmain and Newtown were reported. Last year we saw 8 cases between May and November and these dogs lived in Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Glebe and Redfern. We understand how concerning it is that a vaccinated dog has been infected and died of leptospirosis. Despite this, we are strongly recommending vaccination in dogs living within a 5km radius of Surry Hills, in Balmain, Crows Nest or its immediately surrounding suburbs or if your dog is in contact with rats. Please avoid any rat contact and dont let your dog drink out of puddles. The vaccine has to be given twice 2-4 weeks apart and yearly thereafter. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause acute kidney failure and liver disease in dogs. Dogs become infected by contact with urine from rats or indirectly via contaminated water or soil. They can also become infected by hunting and eating rats. Prevention of leptospirosis is achieved by limiting contact to sources of infection and vaccination. Until recently clinical leptospirosis has only rarely been reported in Sydney. Therefore, historically, dogs have not been routinely vaccinated against this disease. Clinical signs can initially be very vague such as lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Importantly, leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease which means that humans can become infected as well, for example through contact with rat urine or urine of infected dogs, through skin wounds or through the mucus membranes (eg in the mouth).

17.01.2022 Why are fleas bad for my pet? 1. ITCHING. When fleas bite, some of their saliva is left under the skin. It is an irritant and causes an itching sensation. 2. FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS. Some dogs and cats are allergic to flea saliva. One bite in these pets can trigger an allergic reaction that will keep them itching and scratching for 2 WEEKS! This can lead to skin infections, stress over-grooming, hair loss, and even nasty mouth or lip ulcers in cats (ever heard of Eosinophil...ic Granuloma Complex?). 3. ANAEMIA. A bad flea infestation can cause your pet to become anaemic. Fleas are blood sucking parasites. One female cat flea is capable of swallowing almost 16 times her bodyweight in blood every day. Small or sick pets are particularly susceptible to flea bite anaemia and in severe cases, require blood transfusions as part of their treatment. 4. TAPEWORM. Your pet can get tapeworm after swallowing a tapeworm infected flea. This can easily happen during grooming. Once swallowed, the larval tapeworm can then mature into an adult - growing up to 70cm long inside your fur friend! While the risk is very low, humans (particularly children) can similarly catch tapeworm by eating infected fleas. The take home message; MAKE FRIENDS WITH FLEA CONTROL!

16.01.2022 Does your dog have an allergic itch? Just like people, dogs can be allergic to common substances in the environment, such as grass and tree pollen, mold, and dust mites. Dogs may also be allergic to fleas, carpets, insecticides, and even ingredients in shampoos. These allergens trigger itch, and depending on what is causing the allergy, your dog may suffer seasonallyor all year round. Dogs with persistent itch due to allergies are often diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, a ...chronic inflammatory skin condition very similar to eczema. This skin condition is more common than you may think. In fact, it affects up to 10% of dogs worldwide. CYTOPOINT is a safe, effective, long-lasting treatment to help control itch due to allergic or atopic dermatitis. Given as an injection, CYTOPOINT provides 4 to 8 weeks of relief by blocking blocks signals that trigger allergic itch, so the constant scratching can stop, and red irritated skin can heal. Contact us for more info today. https://www.cytopoint4dogs.com/about-cytopoint.aspx

07.01.2022 Did you know that cats are more likely to develop urinary tact disease on rainy days due to reduced activity and a reluctance to go outside to pee! Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (or FLUTD) is one of the most common reasons why vets see cats. The disease affects the bladder and/ or urethra and causes difficulty urinating or urination in inappropriate areas. If your cat is showing signs of FLUTD, best to have him checked as it could be the result of an infection, bladder ...stones, severe stress, underlying kidney disease or, in older patients, bladder cancer. A visit to the vet will usually result in a thorough history taking, a urine sample and a plan to manage the condition that is tailored to your pets needs. Call us on 4945-9044. https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/current-thoughts-on-p/ https://api-v2.vetcheck.it//a631bca6-baa8-4340-8658-16f653

07.01.2022 Dear clients, we have had over 5 cases of KENNEL COUGH diagnosed at the clinic this past week and given how contagious this disease is, we expect to see more. Below are a few facts you might find helpful. * WHAT IS KENNEL COUGH? Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a range of different viruses and bacteria. It is spread through both direct contact (such as smelling, coughing or sneezing) and indirect contact (such as shared water bowls) and as th...e name suggests, is often found in kennels and other areas where dogs might mingle - such as parks and playgrounds. *HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DOG HAS KENNEL COUGH? Infected dogs may behave as usual, or they may become lethargic and off their food. In either case, they will develop a harsh cough, often compared to the sound of a gooses honk. It may sound as if the dog is trying to retch and cough something up, which can be mistaken as an attempt to vomit. Most cases of kennel cough last 1-3 weeks. Complicated cases can last a lot longer and may present with pneumonia, fevers and severe respiratory distress. These cases are usually seen in young, old, sick or immune-compromised animals. * HOW CAN I PROTECT MY DOG? Vaccination is the best form of protection. It is given ANNUALLY, either as an injection or an oral or nasal liquid. As with the human flu shots, the different strains and types of causative bugs means that the vaccine is not 100% effective. However if your pet is vaccinated and they get the disease, their illness will be less severe and will resolve sooner compared to that of an unvaccinated dog. Given the recent increase in local cases, make sure that your pet is up to date in their vaccinations. We recommend taking care in parks, especially if your pet is elderly or on medication for concurrent disease. Avoid communal water bowls and get your pet checked ASAP if you notice an unusual cough develop.

06.01.2022 It may not seem like it today but Summer is Coming... get sun ready! @belmont_vets
