02.01.2022 Happy Easter to all of our Belmores Clients! With Easter fast approaching, we wanted to take this time to wish those who are taking time out of the business an enjoyable break. For those who will be working over this period, its also a good time to reinforce the importance of remaining vigilant to the risk of scams over this period. Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in email scam attempts during periods such as Easter due to business owners and their employee...s being increasingly time and resource poor. The ANZ Scams Unit has compiled a list of the top three business scams currently on their list, which we wanted to share with you to ensure you stay aware over the Easter holiday period: 1. Payroll / HR scams Vendor impersonation: A scammer masquerading as a valid contractor sends an unsolicited request to update your payment and account information Payroll impersonation: Scammers targeting individual employees asking them to update or confirm their payroll information via a fake payroll platform that mimics your real platform. The fraudster steals the employees credentials when the victim logs in from a link or attachment in the email, then change payment information in the real payroll platform. 2. Remote access scams Typically, the scammer will phone you and pretend to be a staff member from a large telecommunications or technology organisation. They may claim your internet connection has been hacked or your security has been compromised and your assistance is required with an investigation. 3. Business e-mail compromise (BEC) A scammer posing as a supplier or vendor may e-mail you to advise their banking details have changed. They will provide a new bank account number and ask that all future payments are processed to the new account. You may also receive an invoice from a supplier or vendor whose email account may have been compromised. The invoice will look legitimate so will not be questioned, with payment made to the criminals account. In other variations, the scammer will send an email internally to a companys accounts team, pretending to be a senior executive such as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Chief Financial Officer (CFO), requesting funds be urgently transferred in the hope the recipient will respond swiftly without verifying the request. With new scams regularly surfacing, its important to educate yourself on the most common types of scams so you know what to look out for. Most importantly, PAUSE before responding. If it doesnt seem right, or is unexpected, question it. Use the contact details on the companys official website to call and verify any suspicious or unusual requests. You can find out more on anz.com.au/security/fraud-detection/types-of-scams. We wish you and your family a safe and happy Easter!
