25.01.2022 Happy Chinese New Year and welcome to the Year of the Rat! Learning about different cultures is always interesting, allows us to embrace diversity and broadens our knowledge of the world around us. Hearing different languages exposes us to new sounds and helps us to develop our communication skills through interpreting gestures and expressions. We have been celebrating this weekend’s Chinese New Year by preparing for our own festival. Tamara visited us for our weekly mus...ic class where we sang a song about a baby dragon using puppets to compliment the experience, making and decorating our own giant dragon puppet, making musical shakers with rice and coffee beans, playing musical instruments as we danced, listening to traditional Chinese fables and stories about diversity, using technology to research information on the 12 Chinese animals of the zodiac and the big favourite - cooking our own fried rice that was delicious. We look forward to continuing learning about our big, wide world.
22.01.2022 Today Greg Dimmock, aka The Music Man visited. Greg brought with him and expertly played 13 instruments from around the world. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves; participating in the wide variety of songs, by moving their bodies and following the actions. I always try to find performers who will engage and entertain our babies right up to our to our 5 year olds, Greg always manges to do this. Greg's show is called A Swag Full of Instruments.
21.01.2022 The other day the children started playing with farm animals. One of our educators joined the children. They ended up counting the animals and placing them on number cards. Play can be simple, but add a knowlegable educator and anything is possible.
21.01.2022 Bonjour! Last week we had a wonderful time welcoming Mademoiselle Ingrid to Belrose Kindergarten so we could experience everything French with the Oh-la-la show. We departed from Sydney International Airport to catch a flight all the way to Paris in France. Oh the sights we saw! The children loved the experience of feeling French as we saw how French people dress, listened to and spoke a variety of French words, sang French songs, visited a French bakery, deli and restaurant... - the escargot sounded delicious and saw some beautiful landmarks including the Eiffel Tower. Being immersed in different cultures expands our knowledge of the world around us and increases our respect towards diversity. What an amazing world we live in! Thank you for visiting us - it was Oh-la-la!
18.01.2022 Setting up an outdoor environment inside using items and objects such as wooden materials, flowers, stones and shells demonstrates respect for nature and each other. (Source: Radich, J., 2011, Everyday learning about making the most of your environment). Our children regularly immerse themselves in sensory and exploratory play experiences with a variety of natural and interesting materials. Throughout this particular activity, children engaged socially as they expressed wonder with their discoveries and took turns to use utensils whilst continuing to develop their fine motor skills to scoop, pour and grasp. Wonderful for little hands! An appealing and calm environment assists children’s development by supporting their ability to focus and encourages self-directed positive behaviour (Radich, 2011).
17.01.2022 We're continuing to enjoy the wonderful array of musical instruments that Tamara has been bringing in for our weekly music sessions. In past weeks Tamara has introduced us to the harp and the violin. We were so impressed with our lovely children recalling that the bow used for the cello is made from the hair of a horse's tail. They were able to draw on their previous knowledge to recognise that the bow for the violin was most likely also made from hair of a horse's tail. Wel...l done! We were all delighted to be able to experience having a try at plucking the harp strings and play the violin as we guided the bow up and down the strings. We also had fun singing some action songs as we moved in time to the rhythm and learn some music symbols including the Rest and the Ta Ti-Ti. We are loving all our opportunities to broaden our musical knowledge!
17.01.2022 We were very fortunate to have Kym Beckton, our favourite Reptile Man return for his annual visit to Belrose Kindergarten to teach us about our native reptile inhabitants. Everyone was in awe upon meeting our special guests and excited to be able to interact with Charlie the blue tongue lizard, two pythons named Freckles and Rufus, Squirt the turtle, the skull of Freddie, who was once a huge 4 metre crocodile and Yoda, an amphibian slippery green tree frog. Kym was very ent...ertaining as he drove home the important messages of respecting animals and nature, responding in a safe and appropriate manner when around our native wildlife, protecting their environments as well as sharing fun and interesting facts, for example, did you know that a turtle’s shell is made from keratin, the same protein as human hair follicles and the nails on our hands and feet? As educators, we are extremely proud of how engaged the children were and their enthusiastic participation throughout Kym’s visit. Their eagerness to learn, gentle handling of our animal friends, continuous smiling and passionate laughter said it all. We also appreciate not having to kiss any giant cockroaches this time . Thank you Kym. We look forward to your next visit.
17.01.2022 With the recent warmer weather we have noticed our stingless bees being very active. To support the children's interest, we have been investigating bees and all that occurs in the Spring time. Using books and technology, we have explored the lifecycle and working roles that bees do in order to make honey. We have reinforced our learning through group and individual craft activities, stories, songs and role play. Bees are amazing, hard working creatures!
16.01.2022 Educators recently noticed children engaged in pirate role play. To support their interest and seize the opportunity to further educate children on Earth’s natural treasures we have been celebrating Pirate Week here at Belrose Kindergarten. Our pirates have had a wonderful time participating in a range of activities including rock painting, treasure hunts, walking the plank, cannon ball throwing, building treasure boxes, erupting volcanoes on deserted islands, pirate yoga, camp outs, singing sea shanties, octopus (paint) fishing, raft building... just to name a few. Never too much fun!
14.01.2022 We have embraced all things Halloween to support our children’s love for dress ups, story telling and role play. Over the past couple of weeks we have had a wonderful time investigating the origins and traditions of Halloween from around the world. We have been implementing our new knowledge through engaging in crafts, art, music, literacy, cooking activities and child initiated play in a social environment. A fun and exciting day ahead tomorrow!
10.01.2022 This is why there is almost always a child swinging in our material swing!
09.01.2022 Over the past couple of weeks, Tamara has brought in some of her special musical instruments for the children to experience. These have included the trumpet and the cello. We all loved hearing her play tunes that we were able to recognise and then sing along to. We also loved having the opportunity to learn how to blow into the trumpet by pushing our lips together to "blow raspberries" to make sounds and sliding the bow "made from 160 hairs from a horse's tail" (interesting f...act) as we played the cello. Music is a wonderful way to support and excite children's emerging literacy and numerical development as we learn skills for listening by recognising different sounds (notes/tones), motor co-ordination as we play musical instruments, counting beats, recalling and imitating tunes in a social environment. The children were very excited to learn about and play these "grown up" instruments. Thanks Tamara!
09.01.2022 The children are always excited to welcome Tamara O'Brien for her weekly music visit . During this time we are actively involved as we participate in singing, movement, counting, rhyming, listening, playing a variety of instruments, decision making as the children choose which instruments they would like to play and how to play them. Children feel a sense of belonging as we join in together to make music whilst developing our emerging literacy, numerical and social skills.... We look forward to your next visit Tamara!
06.01.2022 Another fun day at the park!
05.01.2022 Our preschoolers love creating with play dough and salt dough. This is wonderful for their fine motor muscle development and also builds on their creative thinking and problem solving skills. Yesterday we extended on their creative arts knowledge by visiting Dorota at her Artnest studio. We were so excited to learn about clay and all the amazing things that can be made from it. We were immersed in our projects as we planned and drew our design and then decorated our project... using a range of different tools and materials. It was so much fun to use our senses to experiment, explore and create in such a welcoming and inspiring real life art studio. Thank you Dorota. We can’t wait to see our art pieces when they have been fired in the kiln.
04.01.2022 Car seat safety is so important. This is for those families who have older children.
04.01.2022 I hope that you had a safe and happy holiday. My family spent part of the Christmas and New Years break sorting through and cleaning our resources, throwing out old resources, preparing new ones and setting up ready for the childrens' return. If you are interested in coming and having a tour of the center please call me on 9451 2303.
03.01.2022 Last week we had the very talented and knowledgeable Carol Crees, from Adventures in Music provide her exclusive Professional Development training. The training was called MULTI-SENSORY MUSIC & BRAINDANCE. It was hands on learning where the educators became the children and Carol was our educator. The training taught and reinforced how important sensory motor integration, eye tracking, motor timing skills and fine motor control are for brain development. Carol introduced the ...educators to many different games, songs, and rhymes that stimulate this development. Tapping sticks, a parachute, stretchy cord, scarves, ribbons, egg shakers and bean bags were used. The most interesting thing that I learnt was that children who are exposed to rhyming early on in their lives develop better physical skills. All the educators enjoyed the training and took something away from it. The following day I could hear the educators singing the songs with the children. See more
02.01.2022 For the last two weeks, the children and families of Belrose Kindergarten have enjoyed watching chickens hatch and grow. At least 2 eggs hatched every day in the first week. The children enjoyed watching, touching, holding and looking after the chickens. Educators used the chickens and eggs to develop the children's numeracy, literacy, coordination, listening skills and building on their knowledge of farming and the world.
01.01.2022 In 2018 we will be extending our hours from 7:30-5:30 to 7:30-6:00.
