24.01.2022 How are y’all doing today? On Saturday, I was driving my rad Kingswood home, enjoying the sunshine, high on life from delivering delicious eggs and picking up waste-stream feed from the brewer. An hour later I was having a hectic panic attack. I was ok in the end, because it’s not my first rodeo and I have wonderful people around me. ... I know some folks aren’t there yet. Particularly for my farmer friends (one of the highest risk professions for self harm), particularly for us dudes, even more particularly for those still growing up - talk about this stuff. I didn’t for years and it was a dumb mistake. Talk to your mates, even if they take a while to get it. Talk to a pro. Stay on top of your mental health - it’ll reward you over and over again throughout your life.

24.01.2022 This is what we like to see - the once or twice a year moment when all the animals are in the same part of the farm - The cattle grazing the last of the weeds and winter stockpile before the first flush of spring growth. - The chicken flock ready to follow them, scratching through manure, chasing insects and leaving their high-nitrogen droppings behind. - The pigs in the trees on the dry hillside, ploughing through rubbish grass nothing else will touch, stimulating new growth.... Plus the wagtails and whipbirds in the trees and the quail in the bracken and the wallabies coming down from the hills in the evening and the bandicoots scurrying around in the dark and the worms and the spiders and the centipedes and the fungi in the soil and the humans trying to make sense of it all. Complex and perfect.

24.01.2022 Admittedly, I only watched the first two minutes of this ten minute video. Oof. Watch at your peril. If any of y’all are treating our eggs like this, let me know so we can stop giving them to you..

23.01.2022 Maleny - Woodford - Peachester Rural Landowners: We need you! If you’re an acreage owner in our local area who feels you’re not using your property to its best effect, or that maintenance, fencing and weeding is becoming a bit much, we’d love to talk to you. ... It’s time for us to take a deep breath and expand our grass-based farm. The demand for our beef, pork and eggs is now so strong that we’d love to start tending more land, raising more animals in a natural setting and feeding more people healthy, ethical, delicious food. We use no chemicals, we build a healthy ecosystem, we look after water cycles and we work in harmony with nature. The techniques we use can stop erosion and reverse the slow march of lantana, wild tobacco and camphor laurel. If you’re aware of the work of holistic land managers like the Savory Institute or Polyface Farm, we can make that happen in front of you. We can increase your property value. We’re looking for a long-term relationship with a 20-80 acre property, or part of a property. We’re flexible, hard working and reliable. We’d love to talk to you about what might be possible. Message us or call Nick on 0427 711 020 or Brydie on 0422 273 975.

21.01.2022 Farming isn’t all sunset beers and pretty views. The old Fiat seems to have badly hurt the motor, so I’m spending my day off making emergency arrangements for watering the animals and trying to diagnose this issue. My guess is a broken crank, which will put us in a very difficult spot.

21.01.2022 ALL SOLD!!!! Hey friends! Now that our young flock are nearly up to maximum lay, it’s time to send our older girls off to an early retirement. They’re Bonds red/white/black hens, 11 months old and right at peak lay. They’ve been living in a mobile coop on pasture, fed 18% protein feed and are in perfect health. No egg eaters or ground layers either.... They have years of laying left in them and we’re asking $12 each. There’s 29 available for pickup on Sunday, 11th October. We’re asking for prepayment by bank transfer - to place your order, message the page and we’ll get you some bank details.

21.01.2022 Did you know that young hens lay smaller eggs for their first few weeks? Well, now you do! If you get down to The Village Pickle in Nambour this week, you can grab a medium carton for $7.50..

21.01.2022 One of our rad customers, Lisa from PT to YOU, is walking a bloody long way to raise funds for mental health research. Egg her on with a donation, please.

18.01.2022 Do you Reko!? The only place in Brisbane to get our delicious, ethical, factory-farm-destroying pastured eggs is at Reko Red Hill on a Tuesday afternoon. You have to join the Facebook group to come along - link in comments!

18.01.2022 Oi, why do your egg prices change? They were $9 a few weeks ago and now I see some for $7.50 or $8. What gives? Our egg prices change because we have a small flock, so our carton weights change week-to-week. We still get a few 800+ gram jumbo cartons from our older hens. Our new flock have progressed rapidly from 550g dozens to consistent 700s.. ... Our rule of thumb is relatively simple: eggs are $1 per 100g, plus a dollar. So 800g eggs are $9, 700g are $8 etc. A lot goes into the way we price our eggs, and we can assure you we can’t produce a good egg with no ecological or ethical shortcuts any cheaper.

18.01.2022 Get down to Mongrel immediately - they’re making amazing food with the world’s best eggs.

18.01.2022 Eight perfect little eggs from the 150 new hens today. I’m betting there will be twenty tomorrow... They’re so delicious, with a huge yolk. Lucky customers over the next few weeks will know their dozen includes a pullet egg if they see Brydie’s cute little star on the carton...

17.01.2022 Look what we found!!!

17.01.2022 One of the difficult things about using no chemicals at all on the farm is controlling the woody weeds. Our biggest battle is Camphor Laurel - an invasive species introduced from China in the early 1800s. It grows enormous, spreads rapidly by seed, quickly forms a monoculture and creates a dead zone around its roots. They are a pretty tree though, I guess. We haven’t found the silver bullet for chemical-free control yet. You can’t dig it out, even when it’s tiny, so we cut it... off at the ground over and over until it dies. It’s a bit time consuming. I decided yesterday to attack the source of the problem - two huge parent trees at the top of our hill. I’ve tried two different methods of ringbarking and am going to see if either is effective.

17.01.2022 Well, we said we’d have an update... Our new flock arrived today!! Two months ago, we were lucky enough to meet a legend who rears commercial laying hens and committed to getting us a flock, despite a nationwide chicken shortage. This represents a five-fold increase in our flock, so we can’t wait to provide you all amazing, ethical eggs (while quietly shitting ourselves because we’re nervous about selling them all..) Please bear with us as these young ladies start laying in coming weeks and our production catches up to our promises, and look forward to little pullet eggs, the tastiest of all. #agroecology #pasturedpoultry #pasturedeggs #newbeginnings #excited #maleny #localfood #sunshinecoasthinterland

16.01.2022 Farming is bloody easy when you have a good team behind you. These kids are SO good at grading eggs. Need to have a few of these ourselves to lighten the load!

15.01.2022 Remember the commercial garlic crop we planted back in winter? Well, they never really grew the way we hoped, leaving us with a handful of delicious little cloves we weren’t sure what to do with. We decided to donate all the proceeds to a cause dear to our hearts and thanks to our amazing customers at Reko Red Hill, we raised $200 for the Wayne Weaver Foundation. Well done, you folks - like our egg cartons say: ... KEEP REFRIGERATED - EAT FRESH - PRACTICE MUTUAL AID

15.01.2022 One of our favourite things about the way we farm is how lightly we touch the landscape. Our pigs went to the butcher yesterday and here’s what’s left behind - the fences rolled up, the shelter trailer packed, the feed bin loaded and besides a bit of disturbed soil, you’d never know they were there.

12.01.2022 It’s not too late to get some of this heritage-breed pastured pork in your skillet. Send us your email right now to get the ordering info!

09.01.2022 Chomping through dry grass, but dreaming of spring... Like most of us, I guess! Our first newsletter (and pork ordering instructions) will be going out the second I finish my spring celebration beer. If you want to be in on that, hit us with an email address in the comments or by DM!

09.01.2022 One of our beef customers has been going meat crazy this week. It all looks amazing!!

08.01.2022 A second Chicken Caravan is on the way to the farm today... Hope y’all like pastured-raised eggs!

06.01.2022 It’s us! We’re so happy to be working with such a rad brewery and restaurant in our community. Stay. Tuned.

05.01.2022 My mum made this - the last piece from her July pork pack. Looks amazing! I know lots of you are eagerly anticipating your pack this weekend - it’ll be worth the wait!!

05.01.2022 - meat comes from animals - It’s easy to forget, but it’s true. Woolworths and the factory farming industry would prefer you forgot it, I suppose. Packaged and branded and flavoured and displayed under fluoro lights with pictures of everything but an actual animal.. ... Our Belvedere Farm community understand it very clearly - the delicious pork and beef we enjoy has a story that begins with a living animal that had a decent life and a respectful end. A reminder that we eat animals is in every one of our heritage-breed, pasture-raised pork packs: You’ll notice some dark hair follicles in the skin on your pork belly. Pork has looked like that for about the last 9,000 years, since they were domesticated from wild boar. You don’t see the follicles on gross, factory-farmed meat from the shops. That’s because in the last 50 years, industrial pigs have been specifically bred to have less hair, and what hair they have is fine and white in colour, so the follicles in the meat don’t show. It’s still there. These naked, white-haired pigs don’t thrive on pasture - there’s no protection from sun and weather, and their instincts for rooting and foraging have been bred out of them after a thousand generations raised under artificial lights, on concrete floors. Our pigs aren’t like that. Our customers embrace the difference and understand the subtle reminder of the importance of making ethical choices. The reward isn’t just the warm glow of being a responsible eater. It’s also the amazing taste and texture of heritage-breed, pastured raised pork.

05.01.2022 Every week at Reko Red Hill, a lucky customer gets a carton with half a dozen gigantic double-yolker eggs. The box doesn’t shut and it looks kinda weird but LOOK AT THESE SMILING FACES!! Farming is a pretty tough gig sometimes, but actually knowing the people you feed and getting the feedback first hand is so special - we wouldn’t do anything else!

04.01.2022 If you missed out on our latest round of pasture-raised, heritage-breed pork packs, you can still get some on your fork this summer at Brouhaha Brewery...

03.01.2022 We’re SO excited that our delicious eggs, laid by hens on pasture, are in their first retail store.. If you’re on the coast, swing into the Village Pickle in Nambour and grab yourself a dozen, along with some of their delicious sauces or pickles!!

03.01.2022 Get on it, Belvedere Farm customers! Show them how amazing our produce and your cooking are...

02.01.2022 They’re predicting a hot one today, so the cattle have skipped a couple of paddocks in their planned moves and have gone straight to the shadiest spot on the farm. Wish I could chill there all day too!

02.01.2022 The secret to making perfect scrambled eggs is... ugh, I dunno. But these were pretty great!

01.01.2022 Do you have a crappy old box trailer in the yard? Because one of the key ways we manage the land is by keeping animals moving across it, our farm runs on trailers. We’re currently looking for a box trailer to build our next farm contraption out of. It doesn’t need to be pretty or road registered, just with a sound frame and rolling wheels. ... Hit us up if you can help...

01.01.2022 Our eggs aren’t free range...

01.01.2022 Food - Community - Change Pork Pickup Day is today, 11am-2pm!! Farm tour from 11:30. We even arranged for a calf to be born a few hours ago for extra cuteness. If you missed out on a pork pack, head up to Brouhaha Brewery - first day of Belvedere Farm produce on the menu!... In fact, just do both! #agroecology #pastureraised #pasturedpork
