23.01.2022 When your work mates are your actual mates ... Our team clearly dont spend enough time together during work hours judging by this pic, with a few members of our clinic and stud team managing to sync their calendars for a staff dinner last night!

22.01.2022 Just because your birthday falls on your day off doesnt mean you get out of a Birthday Post! The team would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to our Practice Manager Tegan. We hope you are out enjoying the sunshine on your day off

20.01.2022 Not all horses enjoy lazy Sunday mornings, some of them take the opportunity to get sick or injure themselves! This is why our team is on call 24/7 for emergencies. Call 9296 6666 for any equine emergencies at any time

20.01.2022 Although it may not look or feel like Spring is in the air today, it is certainly in the paddock with this little family definitely getting a head start on the first day of Spring

19.01.2022 Choke We have been seeing a few cases of Choke lately at Belvoir Equine Clinic. Choke in horses is slightly different to when we choke as people, which is when we get food stuck in our tracheas (windpipe) and we cannot breathe. In horses however, choke is where food gets stuck in their oesophagus (which connects the mouth to the stomach) and is not immediately life threatening however can cause issues down the track if not treated.... The cause of choke is oesophageal obstruction. Any type of hard feed (LUPINS, especially if unsoaked!!!), hay or even carrots can cause choke. If your horse is suffering from choke it may be salivating excessively, extending its neck out to try and clear the choke or have food or water coming out of its nostrils. If this is the case contact your veterinarian immediately as complications such as aspiration pneumonia can be serious. Treatment of choke generally involves clearing the obstruction with a stomach tube and anti-inflammatories as well as antibiotics if aspiration pneumonia is suspected. Feed is then withheld for a period of time after the choke has occurred and is slowly reintroduced to ensure no further episodes occur. We find it best to challenge the horse first with grass as this is the most easily digestible option and ask that owners always ensure the hard feed is damp. Some of the main ways to prevent choke are to slow your horse down while it is eating by using things such as slow feeder bags or adding bricks or salt licks to your horses hard feed bin and by feeding your horse off the ground. It is recommended to avoid carrots in horses that have had previous episodes of choke. Once your horse however has choked it can develop strictures in the oesophagus (tight bands around the oesophagus decreasing its diameter) which may predispose it to further episodes of choke. So once again PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE!!!

We were lucky to snap this cheeky pic earlier in the week whilst celebrating the Boss Man’s birthday - the trick was to get him holding his cake so he couldn’t run away! Many Happy Returns Dr Chris, we hope you have enjoyed your #birthdayweek

11.01.2022 Colicky horses Colic season is well and truly upon us at BEC with a large number of colics coming through our gates recently. Colic is a generic term used to describe our equine friends that are presenting with abdominal pain, which may be caused by a range of different reasons such as gas, feed sand accumulation in the gut or even gastric ulceration.... The severity of colic can range from mild to severe and should never be ignored or left untreated as it can be life threatening. Colic signs can range from not being quite right and horses that are simply off their feed to horses that are actively showing signs of discomfort such as pawing, muscle tremors, going down or rolling. Early detection of colic and treatment can be life-saving and such it is important to get your vet out as soon as you suspect colic. It is important to not administer any drugs unless your vet advises you to do so and most importantly, remain calm. Colics can be stressful but if treated early enough most have successful outcomes. If you are concerned that your horse may be showing signs of colic, call our team on 9296 6666 24 hours a day.

11.01.2022 The team were treated to a quick break in the weather and this gorgeous rainbow over the property this morning as we prepare for yet another busy day of Dentals, Drenches, Xrays, Lameness Consults and unfortunately more Colics. Well done to the number of clients who have been able to catch their equine buddies in the early stages of colic recently and we are happy to report everyone is feeling well again

11.01.2022 While most of Perth was copping some wild weather on Monday morning, it was raining foals at Belvoir Equine Clinic with these two beauties choosing the cover of the storm for their timely arrivals. By having foaling alarms on expectant mares at the clinic, our team are able to be present and assist where necessary with every delivery, no matter the time (or weather)

06.01.2022 Foaling Season got off to a nice early start this morning down at the clinic with this precious little bundle making an early (but safe) arrival. All mares brought into the clinic for foaling down are fitted with Foaling Alarms, significantly reducing the risk of any foaling complications. The team are very excited for many more fabulous foals when the season kicks in this Saturday, August 1st.... If you would like to book your mare in to goal down at Belvoir, contact our clinic today on 9296 6666 to book in.

06.01.2022 Feels like time for a little #ThrowbackThursday to warm us all up on a chilly morning! 03.01.2022 Its always a bittersweet moment for the team when families that have foaled down at the clinic are ready to head home, but yesterday was made that bit sweeter by a very generous gift of homemade cupcakes from a very excited owner! This handsome young man made his entrance to the world on Monday morning at the clinic and was keen to get back to the family farm yesterday. Our aim with foaling down is to get mum and bub back home as soon as possible, following a successful Ig...G, so they can settle back in to normal life. We love photo updates of our clinic kids once they leave us and look forward to many more this season

01.01.2022 Breeding season is nearly upon us!!! Mares are seasonally polyoestrous, meaning their fertile cycles occur in the spring and summer months of the year. Typically an oestrous cycle lasts for 21 days with oestrus (being "in heat") lasting approximately 5 of those days.... As the start of the breeding season is upon us, some mares begin to go into what is called a transition period. During this period of time, your mare may undergo a few cycles, which do not result in ovulation, and this generally lasts around 60 days. It is due to the change of light as we start to go into the warmer months that triggers mares to start cycling. If we want to encourage our mares to start cycling earlier we can manipulate the amount of light they are receiving through the use of artificial lighting or an Equilume. These options allow for earlier breeding success, a more timely gestation period, healthier foal weights and the added benefit of nice coats. At Belvoir Equine Clinic, we encourage the use of Equilumes to make this process easier, providing mares with only a small amount of blue light directly to the eye, getting them cycling on time and ready to breed. Once your mare has gone through the transition period and goes "into heat" she may show signs such as elevating her tail, vulval "winking" and increased urination. Typically these signs will intensify throughout the 5 days and then abruptly stop after your mare ovulates. Should you have any further queries about breeding your mare this season, dont hesitate to contact the team on 9296 6666.
