22.01.2022 Dear artists and arts workers, Its come to my attention that in the course of talking to media about Belvoirs re-opening I have been quoted saying something that is frankly stupid, along the lines that artists arent in it to make a living. Clearly thats not true. Its definitely not what I was attempting to articulate, which is that the ultimate value and purpose of the arts is not about money - specifically that Belvoir would prefer to re-open at a loss than remain artis...tically inactive. I accept it didnt come out that way and I apologize to anyone who has rightly been appalled by the idea that an artist would claim that artists arent interested in making a living. To be clear: All work should be properly paid and making art is work. Artists are workers, and deserve all the dignity accorded to work. That means a just wage. Its a national trait in Australia, and de facto Federal policy, to deride the legitimate work of artists. During COVID this sneering schoolyard view of the arts has become a serious hazard to the wellbeing and livelihood of artists and thats appalling. Which is why Belvoirs entire focus for the last five months of shutdown has been to find ways to provide meaningful paid work for artists. We put raising funds for artists ahead of raising funds for our organisation. We have so far created over 151 gigs for artists during shutdown, from 3-month part-time contracts to readings and residencies. We have directly pushed back at every turn against government policy that leaves artists out in the cold. We have fought the idea which is dominating policy thinking that arts companies are mere Pty Ltds. Arts companies are the sum of the work of artists or they are nothing. Ive said repeatedly, because as an artist and Artistic Director and co-CEO of a theatre company I have thought it constantly these last months, that an arts company not employing artists to make art is an absurdity. So I apologise for saying something so stupid as I have been quoted saying. Im surprised I said it, but I also know that it is easy at the moment to misspeak. All I know for sure about that interview is I spoke to the journalist in my pyjamas while recovering from a stomach bug. I hope I have offered some clarity, and some support. In short, I will fight for artists until the Australia Councils independence has been assured and its funding doubled. Which is the big collective struggle ahead of us all in the years to come. Eamon Flack Artistic Director, Belvoir
