22.01.2022 Livestock Market Report// Director and Livestock Agent Ben Emms - Livestock Agent - Ray White Emms Mooney Blayney wraps up the week that was at the CTLX Cattle... Sale and Sheep and Lamb Sale. Cold and wet weather over last weekend certainly influenced cattle supply this week with CTLX restricted to only 745 prime cattle on Tuesday morning. What did continue this week, was the excellent run of prime crop fattened cattle which are attracting ever increasing competition from a wide range of processors both export and domestic. Good runs of weaner and restocker cattle attracted strong interest from the full field of orders. Hardly surprising with the unbelievable season we are enjoying and not likely to change in the near future. Those looking to secure store cattle as we head into spring are reminded that the monthly store cattle fixture is on this Friday 14th August from 10am. The early draw was for just on 2,000 head with some good runs of weaner cattle booked. Remember COVID restrictions remain in place. A viewing window for the general public is from 7am to 9am Friday morning so please take the opportunity to head in and have a look at the offering. Cows lifted considerably on the back of the lighter numbers reaching to levels we have not seen for sometime. The underlying strength of the cattle market certainly seems supply driven given export conditions, exchange rates etc. continue to be against us at present. Domestic consumption on the other hand looks strong and seemingly taking up a little of the slack. As always it is numbers that rule the roost and after three years of drought enforced sell offs sustained runs of big numbers just may be a way off whilst ever the season goes with us. Similarly lamb numbers were low but it was pleasing to see a movement in the positive direction price wise, something long overdue. A number of new season lambs were yarded and sold to good demand into the low 700 cent range whilst the old lambs on offer all saw price improvements of $5 to $8. The lamb market certainly has come off second best in the COVID era. With the lamb processing sector so heavily weighted in Vic the shut downs and slow downs have had a disproportionately hard impact on demand. This added with the impending flush of new season suckers hitting market weights it has proven to be a perfect storm. Those still holding old season stock are now facing tough decisions as the clock ticks on teeth. Whilst we are talking on the lamb market many would be aware of the Cowra Associated Agents decision to transfer their lamb sale to Wednesday following on from CTLX. To facilitate this change - which we are of the opinion will be to the vendors benefit - the CTLX lamb sale will from next week commence at 8am. Obviously this will require transport arrangements to be made in accordance, however we do not envisage any insurmountable problems. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss.
