19.01.2022 For those folk who are interested, the following photo is of the Bena Hotel which was located next to our hall. The building was commenced in 1888 and opened the following year as the Cromwell Hotel. It operated until 1942, when it was deemed no longer commercially viable.
18.01.2022 A little late, but this month we feature the Bena Tennis Club. First formed in 1913 the club and opened in March the following year. The club had 60+ members in the early days but although numbers have decreased, the club is still active and the courts are still in regular use. The courts are located on the site of the old Bena Butter Factory. The club rooms were once the home of the Watson family and as well as the tennis club, is used as the meeting place for the Bena CWA and more recently the location for the monthly Bena produce swap.
18.01.2022 What a great night to wrap up the last of the Cafe Culture series for 2019 with 95 people attending the Dr Hernandez performance at the hall. What a talented group of musicians with Sally Ford’s soaring Spanish vocals a highlight. The hall committee thanks everyone for their support during the year and we look forward to brining to you an exciting program next year. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year
13.01.2022 The month of July sees us featuring the Bena Presbyterian Church. Constructed in 1908, it served the community until the 1960s. The current owners have recently repainted and re-roofed the building and the before and after photos are shown along with the foundation stone Also shown are 2 stone tablets that were inside the church but are now held at the Coal Creek historical village... Land to build the church was purchased from the Victorian Railway Commission for 50 and after successful money raising efforts, the building was completed at a cost of 165/10/-
11.01.2022 This month we feature the Bena railway station. The railway came to Bena in 1891 and ran until the line was closed to passenger and freight in the 1990’s. Apart from the daily passenger trains to and from Melbourne, at least nine coal freight trains passed through Bena every day or night.
11.01.2022 Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings and entertainment venues in Victoria, we regret to advise that the next Cafe Culture event for the Canyon Callers scheduled for Friday 15th May has been cancelled. The following show, the Lady Ha Ha show due to be held on 4th September will be re-assessed in late June/July Hopefully by then the current situation may have resolved itself and the show will go ahead.... We will, of course keep you posted as the position becomes clearer. In the mean time please all stay safe and follow the guidelines suggested by Federal, State and Local Government’s
