25.01.2022 After a long and travel-restricted winter, the warm sun and blossoms of spring is a welcome sight for many. We have been loving the weather and slightly longer days, and we bet your pets have been enjoying the changing conditions too! If you’ve caught your pet lounging around, basking in the warm rays, post a picture in the comments below!
24.01.2022 Are you fe-line like you need a holiday? If you're planning a getaway this summer, it’s important to check your cat has everything they need before boarding. Make sure your cat’s parasite control and vaccinations are up-to-date. All catteries require proof of current F3 vaccination before accepting your cat. If you’re unsure whether your cat is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.
23.01.2022 Good oral health is important for your dog’s overall health. Many people feed raw bones to help keep their dog’s teeth clean. Raw bone feeding also brings with it the benefit of enrichment and stimulation for your pet, however, there are some risks with feeding bones to dogs. Raw bones can occasionally lead to fractured teeth and on rare occasions perforation of the intestines. It is a good idea to supervise your dog when feeding raw bones. Other options for keeping teeth clean include daily brushing with a soft pet toothbrush, veterinary-formulated dental chews or booking in for a scale and polish.
23.01.2022 How often you should wash your dog depends on their breed, lifestyle and skin health. If your dog is a short-coated breed that lives outside, they probably only need to be washed with gentle dog shampoo twice a year. If you have a long-coated breed, or a dog that lives inside, or one that goes swimming regularly, you might want to wash more often. Dog’s don’t need to be bathed weekly, unless they have a skin condition that requires medicated shampoo.
21.01.2022 Have you been asked to bring in a sample of your pet’s urine before? Urine samples need to be free of contaminants, which means you should be careful when catching the urine. If you have a dog, use a clean ice cream container to catch a sample when they squat or lift their leg. If you have a cat, you can get special non-absorbent litter that you use in a clean litter tray to obtain a sample. Ask us if you need help sourcing non-absorbent litter for your cat.
21.01.2022 After the year that’s been, we all need a holiday. And while Bali might be out of the question, there are plenty of things to see and do in Australia. If you’re planning on boarding your dog this summer, make sure their parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. All kennels require proof of current C5 vaccination before accepting your dog. If you’re unsure whether your dog is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.
17.01.2022 If you have changed your phone number or address since your pet was microchipped, then it’s time to update their chip details. Check the paperwork that came with your pet’s microchip, as often you can call or update details online. If you no longer have that paperwork, check your pet’s microchip on www.petaddress.com.au to find out which registry they are on. If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number, just bring them into the clinic and we can scan their chip for the number.
16.01.2022 With the quick spread of COVID-19 this year, we are all aware of the need to wash our hands regularly. It’s World Handwashing Day tomorrow, and this year, we’re encouraging you to consider how often you wash your hands after handling your pet, their food or food dishes. Pet food, particularly raw food, is a common source of microbial contamination. Keep pet and human dishes separate and always wash your hands after handling your pet or their food.
14.01.2022 Nothing can bring an otherwise tough dog to their knees like a torn nail. Torn nails can bleed dramatically, but the real issue is the exposed bundle of nerves and blood vessels in the ‘quick’, which can lead to significant pain and infection, if left untreated. It’s best to bring your dog into the clinic if they’ve torn a nail. If there is a lot of bleeding, you can gently wrap their foot in a towel and bring them straight down.
11.01.2022 Heat stress is a risk to all pets, but particularly dogs and those kept in cages, such as rabbits and birds. All pets must have access to shade in a well-ventilated area, as well as constant access to cool, fresh water. Dogs should only be exercised in the early morning or evening. If your pets show signs of heat stress, such as open-mouth panting, collapse, or excessive salivating (dogs), contact us immediately. Let’s stay safe this summer.
11.01.2022 Did you know that the amount, frequency and colour of pee your pet produces can tell us a lot about their health? If your pet is urinating frequently and in small volumes, they might have an infection. If your pet is straining to pee but not producing anything, they might have an obstruction. All pet owners should be aware of their pet’s toileting habits so issues can be picked up early. Call us today if you’re concerned about your pet’s pee routine.

07.01.2022 Cats can come into season multiple times a year and breed easily, so it’s important to have your cat desexed to prevent unwanted kittens and other potential issues. Cat shelters often have large numbers of kittens needing to be re-homed, so the best advice is whether your cat is male or female, do the right thing by your cat and get them desexed now! Contact our team for more information about desexing your pet.
04.01.2022 Monitoring of anaesthesia is critical to any successful surgery. It all starts with our experienced and well-trained veterinary nursing staff, who monitor your pet under anaesthesia. Our nurses monitor anaesthesia with equipment used in human hospitals as well as frequent, manual checks of the patient’s heart rate, temperature, and depth of anaesthesia. The vet nurses support our veterinarians and together they ensure your pet is monitored whilst undergoing their surgical or dental procedure.
03.01.2022 Canine heartworm disease is a deadly infection spread by mosquitoes, so it’s important your dog is on heartworm preventatives. If you think your dog has missed a dose of heartworm preventative, or you’ve been more than a few weeks late for a monthly dose, your dog might be at risk of heartworm infection. Make an appointment with us today if you’re concerned. There is an in-house test we can run to determine if your dog has been infected with heartworm.
02.01.2022 When travelling with dogs in the car, it’s important they are adequately restrained for both their safety and yours. Many car restraints for dogs aren’t thoroughly tested for safety, with reviews by Choice and the NRMA previously failing many of the available products as unsafe for people, pets or both. Make sure you research car restraints before buying and purchase a good quality restraint that has been thoroughly safety tested to protect both you and your pooch.
01.01.2022 Do you have a cat that vomits? Although vomiting can be caused by medical conditions, one normal cause of occasional vomiting in otherwise healthy cats is hairballs. As cats self-groom, they ingest a lot of hair that is normally passed in their faeces, but sometimes this hair is vomited up. If you find your cat vomiting or retching frequently, in large volumes, or is unwell, make an appointment with us today.
01.01.2022 When booking your pet in for surgery, pre-anaesthetic blood tests may be offered. These blood tests are conducted to assess the health of your pet’s liver and kidneys, as these organs help filter anaesthetic drugs from the blood, and the blood tests help detect any underlying issues that might interfere with surgery, such as a low platelet count and anaemia that could impact blood clotting and organ function. Speak with us about whether pre-anaesthetic blood tests are right for your pet.
01.01.2022 Grain-free diets are marketed as more natural than other commercial pet foods, and these diets generally substitute cereals or grains for other sources of carbohydrates, such as potatoes and legumes. ‘Grain-free’ is not a protected or defined term, so it is possible that many of the diets marketed in this way may actually still contain grains. Like all pet food trends, it is best to avoid the hype and stick with high quality, AAFCO-accredited, complete and balanced diets. Talk to our friendly team for more information about the best pet food for your pet.
01.01.2022 Dr Chandi and nurse Hollie were so lucky yesterday to enjoy helping bring these beautiful Boston Terriers into the world by c- section. Mum and 6 pups are doing well
