25.01.2022 #theshowmustbepaused

23.01.2022 Annabelle couldn't help but jump into this song on my stream this morning

21.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week in Australia, where we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture as a vital and important part of Australian culture. There is a strong culture of music in Aboriginal culture - in their beliefs they talk about songlines - the paths across the sky and sometimes the land that mark the route followed by creator-beings during the Dreaming. 18.01.2022 Using a practice journal is something that I haven't overly utilised in the past, but Nathan Cole's #violympics has me trying it out. Here's my journal from yesterday - it helped me to stay focussed in my practice, reflect on what worked, and look towards tomorrow.

18.01.2022 So while I was browsing for some new sounds to play around with, I noticed that Spitfire Audio was holding a competition - score a scene from the new season of Westworld, and potentially win the complete collection of Spitfire Audio sounds. This is my first attempt at scoring to film, and it was fun to explore this area. I utilised a rhythmic and harmonic ostinato to help build tension, rising in pitch and tempo as we build to the climax. I tried a few different things at the end, including the final bars of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony - it was close, but not quite what I was trying for, so I utilised his instrumentation and voicing for the final chord, and adjusted it so that it fit thematically with what I had been building towards. Any comments and things I can improve upon would be greatly appreciated

16.01.2022 It was so good to get back into orchestra playing tonight, playing through Beethoven 2 and Tchaikovsky 3 with MetSO - the Metropolitan symphony orchestra. Good to see some familiar faces and meet new friends

16.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, or Armistice Day - the day the guns fell silent in World War 1. And I thought it fitting to look at this incredible piece of music by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending. First composed in 1914 for violin and piano, due to the outbreak of the war it wasn't performed until 1920. [ 438 more words ] http://benclapton.id.au/2020/11/11/the-lark-ascending/

14.01.2022 So I've been doing a lot of work on my piano piece, and I'm calling it finished. I'm really happy with this, and where it goes harmonically, and I hope you enjoy it. It opens with a sense of perpetual motion - recalling the sense of perpetually moving across the Australian continent. Yet, amidst all this motion is a sense of stillness - harmonically, the section uses only three chords, yet despite this there is beauty and majesty in melody, whilst also small and delicate part...s. It then moves into the middle section, a Tranquillo, where I was drawing to mind the places where we had time to stop and be still. Here, I sought to explore the softer dynamics, whilst still having a wide tonal range. It transitions back into the perpetual motion themes, this time in C major as opposed to A minor, and the themes are presented in reverse. We finish again with the Tranquillo section again, in C as opposed to F, reflecting on our journey as it trails off to silence. I've got a bit of editing on this to prepare it for publication, if there is someone daring enough to play it, and I'll prepare a digital recording for use in my video, which now will hopefully be up soon.

12.01.2022 I love Guy Sebastian's song, Choir. So I arranged it for SATB Choir. You can buy the music for it here.

11.01.2022 I'm taking part in Nathan Cole's #violympics practice challenge over the next five days. I'm going to be sharing some videos of my practice and they'll all be available in a playlist on youtube found here. Tonight's effort was a good reminder of what it is to do focussed and efficient practice. Looking forward to what I can complete in the next 5 days.

11.01.2022 Got some new music coming soon. Keep an eye out, and make sure you're following my page to know when it's released.

08.01.2022 This is the start of a new series where I'm going to highlight practice techniques. I know that as a teacher, I often don't have time to go into specific techniques of how to practice, because there is so much to get into during the lesson. However, learning how to practice is just as important as learning how to play an instrument - if not moreso, as you can take the skills you learn in how to practice over to different instruments.... http://benclapton.id.au///12/practice-techniques-blocking/

07.01.2022 My trip across the Nullarbor was incredible and inspiring. Reflecting on my trip, I wrote this piece for solo piano. A minimalist inspired piece with moments of movement and reflection, this piece is suited to an intermediate-advanced player. The sheet music is available for digital download from Sheet Music Plus.
