25.01.2022 Evidence has shown impaired deep cervical flexor muscle motor control and endurance in individuals with neck pain disorders and cervicogenic headache. A forward head posture in sitting places the deep neck flexors into a lengthened position, which then become weak and inhibited over time. Here’s an exercise aimed to improve the endurance of the deep neck flexors. 1. Ensure you have a towel positioned under your head to assume a neutral neck position.... 2. Gently ‘nod’ your head by sliding your head up the towel and elongating through the back of the neck. DO NOT press your head into the towel. This low load training, which is focused on motor control, has shown through clinical trials to reduce neck pain and headache

06.01.2022 DEEP NECK EXTENSORS The deep neck extensors probably don’t get as much attention as the flexors, but they should. This muscle group tends to suffer just as much in a forward head posture and their function becomes similarly impaired with neck pain disorders and cervicogenic headache. Stage 1 retraining includes exercises such as the one shown, which can also be performed in a four point kneel position or propped on forearms.... Stage 2 may include the addition of rotation and/or adding load via theraband resistance or a helmet. MAIN TIP: DON’T let the chin poke out throughout the movement.

05.01.2022 Hi everyone, Today we are thinking of our frontline Physio’s working directly with COVID-19 positive patients. These are your family, colleagues, friends, neighbours, physios and fellow Australians. ... Thank you. And a big thank you to Donna Urquhart for organising. __________________ HELP SUPPORT OUR FRONTLINE PHYSIOTHERAPISTS! It is August 2020. You arrive at the hospital and make your way to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). You review your case load. Your patients today are 30 to 80 years of age and have severe illness from COVID-19. It is unclear whether they will survive. Your job is to help your patients breathe and breathe in a way that improves their oxygen levels - this may involve positioning, using a device with high flow oxygen or other breathing techniques. For those that show signs of recovery, you may start early rehabilitation (when it is safe to do so) to maintain muscle strength and function. To minimise your risk of infection, you wear full personal protective gear and where possible you treat your patients in negative pressure rooms and hoods. You are a specialist ICU physiotherapist in the midst of the 2020 Corona virus (COVID-19) pandemic. _________________________________ As a physiotherapist clinic who has colleagues working on the frontline in ICU, we are acutely aware of the incredible contribution that our specialist physiotherapists are making in these current challenging times. While most of us feel powerless to help our health workers, there are things we can do. Please join us in showing our support and thanking our physiotherapists for their tremendous care, dedication and courage with these 2 simple steps: 1. FREE EVENT: Walk or run 1km AND email a photo of you on your run/walk. Your photo will be included in Tribute Walls (a photo mosaic with an overlay of the Frontline Heroes mural) for our physiotherapists. Photos will be accepted until 13th September 2020. EMAIL YOUR PHOTOS TO: [email protected] 2. DONATE THE COST OF A COFFEE Your support is needed to: (i) fund the Tribute Walls that will be given to our Melbourne ICU physiotherapy teams. (ii) fund research that is investigating the impact of physiotherapy in COVID-19 patients and the physiotherapy resources needed in a pandemic. DONATE HERE: https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-tribute-to-frontline-physiothe Thank you for your involvement with this initiative - we sincerely appreciate your support and we look forward to receiving your photo and virtual cup of coffee!
