25.01.2022 THERE was quite a deluge of rain this morning at BAWCS Sanctuary. Whilst some residents went into their shelters to stay dry, our ducks were the opposite and took full advantage of a free 'shower'. It certainly looks like La Nina is underway. BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

23.01.2022 (we found two great concreters!) so we're going to give it another shot and put a call out for someone to 'seal' our recently laid concrete slab. This is PAID work Our 21 square slab was going to be sealed by our volunteers but with a number of things that could go wrong, we've decided to put the call out for someone that has the necessary knowledge and skills required to give our slab a smooth finish with 'gloss' for ease of mopping.... Requirements: experienced and qualified in doing this sort of work can provide a written quote on business letterhead will be able to provide a tax invoice and equally important, can do asap Interested? 22.01.2022 and long manes from Winter, permanent BAWCS Sanctuary resident Monkey is hitting his 'groove' and doing a great Tina Turner impersonation with his long mane. There aren't that many 'rescue' options for horses (no matter how big or small you are) so we were delighted to have had room to take on Monkey (our vet who 'snipped' him named him) to give him a safe long term home. Interesting, another vet had suggested NOT castrating him because of his 'colour...'. We of course were mortified to hear this as there as so many horses (miniature or otherwise) born that do not have a great future due to breeding based on financial worth. Yes, horses do require ongoing financial commitment and at BAWCS Sanctuary, you don't have to be providing a 'return' for your keep. Like to keep our 'freeloaders' happy? 15.01.2022 LATEST UPDATE on our precious Sanctuary resident Connie https://bit.ly/34RGjkV . After getting into alittle trouble 5 weeks ago, https://bit.ly/2G6Mo54 we've seen a pretty horrendous infected wound finally heal to the point of Connie finally being able to leave the confinement of her yard. It's been pretty full on making sure she received everything needed including several onsite vet visits for initial flushing (sedation required), antibiotic injections, pain relief, in...novative use of a fly veil to keep flies away and insect repellant spray for extra protection. She's been abit cranky (understandably) being confined and being a 'water girl' which is what got her into trouble in the first place, we had to change out her water container to a much larger one so she couldn't knock it over to play in the 'mud' created. Just a heads up for those that may be abit squeamish, the video contains images of the wound towards the end of the video. When BAWCS Sanctuary takes in a soul in need, it is for life regardless of what is required. We are delighted to have her back to her happy self and take strength in the resilience of this almost 30 year old ex racehorse that could have had a much different outcome had she not ended up with us. Here are some interesting facts, including only male magpies swoop, from Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network that you may not be aware of and some tips for living with magpies during this time. Watch Out! Spring is swooping season! ... Currently birds are nesting and defending their chicks and one that can be of the most concern to some people is the beautiful iconic magpie. Male Magpies swoop people because they are protecting their chicks, but also because the person walking or riding by reminds the bird of someone who disturbed them in the past. Magpies have very long memories and do remember faces! Most Magpies don't swoop people. Females don't swoop at all because they are busy sitting on the eggs, and only 12% of male Magpies are aggressive. These few males only swoop for six weeks while their chicks are in the nest. Understandably, these dads are just being protective of their babies. If you have a swooping magpie nearby try to avoid the area, the best way to protect yourself from a swooping bird is to avoid venturing into their territory. If you must pass through the area: Move quickly but do not run. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses outdoors to protect your face and eyes Cyclists should wear a helmet, dismount and walk through the area. Don’t interfere with or throw stones at birds. This gives them added reason to see humans as a threat and may increase swooping behaviourand they will remember you! 12.01.2022 has attracted alot of attention since being listed for adoption at BAWCS Shelter. It's not such an easy process for some felines when they come into the Shelter and Daisy is a testament to the challenges. Originally adopted out by us two years ago, Daisy had been living a wonderful life (with the support of medication for excessive 'licking' behaviour leading to bald patches!!). ... Daisy has returned to BAWCS due to her 'mum' going into 'care' and no longer being able to look after her. (BAWCS Shelter Adoption policy enables protection for our adoptees should their future be challenged.) We have been managing Daisy's licking and are thinking a change of enviornment/ understanding and acceptance of her behaviour will be the right fit for her. 12.01.2022 , Cossy's mum got the phone call she had been desperately hoping for. Who is Cossy? Back story https://bit.ly/3c6dyol After almost a full week since going missing, Cossy had been sighted and his mum couldn't get in the car quick enough to go and find him. ... 1km from where he was sighted by the truck driver who'd recognised Cossy from the flyer that had ended up in his mail box earlier in the week, Cossy's mum saw her little dog, pulled over, opened the car door and after Cossy looked at her as if to see 'what took you so long'....jumped into the car. His family were amazing in the efforts they went to, dropping flyers, advertising in local papers, contacting Pounds, vets, taking out FB paid ads, sharing far and wide on many lost pet FB pages and of course contacted BAWCS Shelter where Cossy was originally adopted from as a pup 8 years ago. Cossy's mum has reported he is well, although lost alittle weight and was being taken to the vet for a check over. to everyone that cared and shared. We are so delighted this little man is back home safe and sound and won't be travelling in a car with the window down again! BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

12.01.2022 THIS cute as a button senior is currently enjoying time in BAWCS Boarding Kennels and Cattery whilst her long term foster carers are away on a well deserved break from COVID-19 lockdown. There's more to this story though. Thanks to this dog owner making provision in her Will for her beloved pet, Marcey, at 13 years old is safe for the rest of her life in permanent long term foster care, not wanting for anything, surrounded by love even after her owner has passed.... As a senior, your chances of being rehomed aren't that great, especially because potential adopters often don't want to take on a dog that 1. may not have a long life and 2. usually have health issues associated with age which can be expensive. Marcey's 'mum' is resting peacefully now, and as she looks down, she can see that her beautiful girl who she made provision for, is being well looked after. is another service we offer to ensure the safety of pets when their owners are no longer able to care for them. 12.01.2022 offers 'outreach pet care' which means our volunteers visit the homes of disadvantaged pet owners to provide pets food and care when they are 'home alone'. We recently received a call from Bendigo Health requesting our assistance for two cats whilst their owner recovers in hospital. Knowing your pets are being cared for whilst you are away allows you to concentrate on recovery so you can return home as soon as possible.... Cats in photo aren't the actual cats. 09.01.2022 : Back in November 2016 BAWCS Shelter volunteers made a trip to Ararat Dog Pound to pick up a beautiful dog named Clyde. https://bit.ly/32GQyso Clyde was already desexed so had been owned by someone at some stage. Why he wasn't reclaimed we will never know but that is all history now. Originally adopted in January 2017, it wasn't the right fit so under ' ' ', Clyde was welcomed back with ope...n arms and waited patiently (always safe) until the right fit did come along in August 2017. Clyde is still 'living the dream' with this latest update from his 'parents'. "Clyde had a wonderful morning walking from Yarra bend park to Abbotsford convent and enjoying the sunshine" Thanks to Pounds working with 'rescue', Clyde found his perfect home.
