25.01.2022 Today is International Nurses Day. To our members who are nurses; to our members who have partners, children or parents who are nurses; to all the nurses who have worked so hard and so well in the face of all the challenges over the past few months during the pandemic - THANK YOU from all of us here at Bendigo SES.... You are all awesome, and we love you for what you do for us all. #notallsuperhoeroeswearcapes #BendigoHealth

24.01.2022 Tonights episode of Paramedics shows the tragic event where we lost two VICSES volunteers from the Port Campbell unit. They were also volunteer lifesavers and it was while responding in this capacity that they very sadly lost their lives, while a third was injured. We understand that watching something like this may bring up emotions which may cause distress. ... Please ask for help if you need it. Rescuing the rescuers is the most difficult of jobs you can ever be tasked to. Join us tonight in remembering two of the best.

24.01.2022 The volunteers from Bendigo SES thank you for your service. #VicPol #westandtogether #weworkasone

23.01.2022 The best travel plans weve seen for Easter 2020! Perhaps youll find time to clean out those gutters, clear debris out of your drains, maybe even get a little wild and develop an emergency plan for your family.\_()_/ #inthistogether #stayathome #savelives #happyeaster

23.01.2022 We had a most welcome visitor while we were at training last night. Anthony had a vehicle he no longer needed and he very kindly donated it to us to use in our road crash rescue training. Paul and Jodie were pleased to accept this from Anthony, and they encourage anyone who might have an unwanted vehicle of any kind hanging around to get in touch with us. ... We are always looking for these to practice our skills on, old or new, car, station wagon, hatch, people mover, truck - whatever. If you have one you want to get rid of, message our page. We are able to arrange pick up in most circumstances as well. Thanks Anthony, it'll certainly go to a great cause!

22.01.2022 We cannot gather on ANZAC Day tomorrow in our usual way to commemorate those who have served, but our appreciation for their sacrifice will #lightupthedawn as we stand in our driveways, on our balconies, or in our living rooms. We may not be able to stand together, but we still stand united under the spirit of ANZAC #anzacday2020 #lestweforget #westandunited #rslanzacspirit

20.01.2022 So very sorry to hear our fellow volunteers have had things that they use to support their community, stolen from them. If anyone happens to come across any items like these for sale anywhere, please tell the authorities. It's not easy to raise the money to buy replacement equipment, especially when the current economic conditions prevent many people from being able to donate.... Pretty awful too if they can't search to the best of their ability for a missing person due to this theft.

20.01.2022 Early start to the day out in Axe Creek this morning. Big thanks to all those driving past who slowed down and took care driving through. It was great to see, as was the offer of assistance from a person on the way to work. Got to love how our community pitches in!... #coldthismorning #nothinglikeachainsawtowakeuptheneighbours

20.01.2022 Theres some rain on the way! Hopefully its enough for the garden, but not enough for flooding. Make sure you prepare as much as you can tonight, and call us on 132 500 should you need help with any issues. ... Remember that our duty officer will be calling and asking you additional questions before our crews attend to ensure our volunteers can wear the appropriate protective clothing. Please dont be offended by these questions - were simply doing our best to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 situation. #stayhome #staysafe #staydry

20.01.2022 We continued the road crash rescue theme in training last night, this time looking at a number of different stabilisation scenarios. We dealt with a small car on wheels, a raised vehicle such as a four wheel drive, and a car on its side amongst others. We used plastic blocks, wooden cribbing and the Stabfast.... A good refresher run by Mike and Ricky.

19.01.2022 This image serves a double purpose. A reminder to obey seat belt laws and keep everyone in your car safe - thats what youd normally expect. Also though, today it serves as a reminder to buckle up and hang on for the ride starting in only a few hours in Victoria. ... Stage 3 restrictions regionally and stage 4 in Melbourne start at 1159pm tonight. To beat this virus everyone needs to play their part in this effort. Wear the mask. Follow the rules. Stay home. Wash your hands. Isolate and quarantine as needed. Save a life. Maybe your own. One of the values of VICSES is #togetherwearevicses meaning we work together even when were apart, different units, different regions. Its time to adopt #togetherwearevictoria and realise we all want the same outcome. An end to the virus and the restrictions. That will only happen if we work as one to achieve it. Were ready (as ready as we can be given the circumstances). We hope you are too. Know that we have your back

19.01.2022 As we embark on six weeks of stage 4 (in Melbourne) and stage 3 (regional Victoria) restrictions, we ask you all remember to be kind to one another. Everyone is dealing with this differently and we all have our own unique challenges. Theres no one this hasnt changed things for. Were no longer training in person but will still be available for response to our community as required. ... Wear your masks, keep your distance and follow the rules. Importantly, dont take your frustrations out on those doing their jobs, whether they are working in a supermarket or enforcing the rules. No one deserves to be treated poorly for doing their job. Follow Paddys example and stay safe. We are

18.01.2022 Our volunteers are saddened to hear of the tragic deaths of some of our colleagues from Victoria Police today. Our hearts go out to their families, friends, colleagues and all who witnessed or attended this scene. Everyone should finish their shift safely.

18.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS Yesterday the Victorian Premier released the following statement regarding a state-wide shutdown of non-essential services within the next 48 hours until further notice. Rest assured that Bendigo SES and other emergency services are exempt from this and will continue to serve the community 24 hours a day 7 days a week.... Our top priority is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both SES volunteers and any members of the community we are assisting. As a Unit we have taken additional measures over the last few weeks to minimise the risk of COVID-19 affecting our operations and will continue to do so as the situation evolves. If you call us for assistance we may ask you some additional questions before our teams attend. This is so we can take any required precautions for the health of you and our members. Please dont be offended by these questions - it wont impact our ability to respond to you, just what we wear when we do. We ask that as a community, everyone follows the advice of health experts. Reputable and up to date information on Coronavirus can be accessed through the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you see debris on the road or require emergency assistance in floods and storms, please contact the SES on 132 500 For life-threatening situations, please call triple zero (000) If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech impairment, contact emergency numbers using the National Relay Service: - TTY users phone 106 then ask for either 000 or 132 500 - Speak and Listen users phone 1800 555 727 then ask for either 000 or 132 500 - Internet relay users connect to the NRS then ask for either 000 or 132 500

17.01.2022 Its National Volunteer Week, and today is WOW (Wear Orange Wednesday). WOW is your opportunity to say thank you to your local SES volunteers for what they do to help your community. You can do this simply by wearing orange, making an orange sign, waving an orange flag or ribbon, eating something orange, or dressing your pet in a cute orange outfit.... We encourage you to share your photos of doing any of those things to our page. Meanwhile, our volunteers have been wearing their orange outfits today when they went to help a homeowner who had their trampoline where they really didnt want it. A gust of wind lifted it on to their house and shed roof during the storm earlier today. Thanks to Mike, Bridget, Jess and Denise for helping with this one!

17.01.2022 Our volunteers are very busy tonight, with over 20 requests for assistance relating to flooding and building damage since around 8pm, plus 2 rescue events. Both Bendigo and Marong SES have been called tonight to separate instances of people being trapped in their vehicles in flood water. Our message to you - dont enter flood water. Ever. ... If you see our vehicles out tonight, please give us space to do our job safely. If you are experiencing flooding, you should try to redirect the water or use what you can to block the entry points to your home (doors and windows) as we are currently committed to a rescue and may not reach you quickly. Were doing our best. Stay safe everyone.

16.01.2022 Training last night involved some night navigation on bush tracks and searching by 4wd and on foot for our casualty who we knew had fallen from their mountain bike and become impaled. On locating our casualty we rendered first aid and after some rapid problem solving, dismantled the bike, leaving the impalement in place to prevent further injury or bleeding out. We then did some casualty handling, packaging our casualty into our mule (a wheeled stretcher), and got them safely... out of the bush location to medical assistance. A really interesting scenario, pulling together elements of a number of real jobs weve had over the last few months. Thanks to the training team for challenging us this way, and for all members who took part and stuck to physical distancing requirements while still rescuing our casualty. Great job! See more

14.01.2022 As we move to step 3 in regional Victoria in the coming days, our volunteers will once again be able to undertake training, albeit in small groups and in the open air. Were still working out exactly what this will look like, but theres a good chance youll start to see us out and about in the community, practising the skills that help us help you. Were also investigating what needs to happen before we can go back to recruiting members. This may take a while but well kee...p you informed as we go. We know theres a lot of interest in joining us, and we cant wait to meet you and get you on board! Until then, stay safe and well. See you soon!

14.01.2022 At 5:40pm tonight, SES Bendigo will be sounding our truck sirens in memory of the four fallen Victoria Police officers who tragically lost their lives last week. During this time, please take a moment of silence to honour Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor... Senior Constable Kevin King Constable Josh Prestney Constable Glen Humphris We do ask that you please help us make your friends and family aware of this event and not to be alarmed when you hear the siren.

13.01.2022 With mandatory face coverings when in public in Victoria starting from midnight Sunday, we thought this guide might be useful to help ensure youre wearing yours safely and effectively. If our volunteers can wear them while wielding the jaws of life cutting people out of cars, sometimes for an extended period, in heat, rain and tight spaces, wearing one to the supermarket will be a piece of cake for everyone. Please do your bit to keep us all safe and knock this virus out. ... As always, refer to the DHHS website for current information and requirements.

12.01.2022 This is how many requests for assistance our volunteers have responded to since yesterday morning. These have mostly related to building damage and flooding threats, with the odd tree and sadly two rescues, one of which ended up being a double fatality. We were tied up for some time at this job and were not able to get to storm jobs as quickly as we, or those asking for our assistance, may have liked. Were sure you understand the need to triage our response. ... We still have crews out in the field at the moment, while others are resting ready to come in if needed later today. As always, please give us space to do what we need to do, and call us on 132 500 if you need help - but we really encourage you to see what steps you can take to protect your property (safely) from the rain still expected over the next day or so. Dig a trench to divert water, use shopping bags filled with soil to block water entering your doors if you dont have sandbags, clean your gutters if safe to do so, and PLEASE stay out of ask floodwater. You simply never know whats happened under it. #staysafe #wereinthistogether

12.01.2022 If you look closely through these photos youll see volunteers from SES Bendigo and SES Castlemaine who answered the call from our South West cousins. After massive storm damage in Waurn Ponds and surrounding suburbs crews from all around the state have been helping with emergency repairs from misplaced trampolines to completely destroyed roofs. What a way to spend WOW day! ... #weworkasone #togetherwearevicses

12.01.2022 POSTPONED - In order to limit the exposure of our emergency volunteers to the virus and maintain our ability to respond to the needs of our community, we are ceasing all non-essential contact until further notice. We will let people know when it is considered an acceptable risk to resume these activities and continue with our recruitment intake for 2020. Our operational response will not be affected at this point in time and we thank you for understanding, and please, continue to be safe, be kind, and wash your hands. #communitymatters #washyourhands #sorryfortheinconvenience

10.01.2022 https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2408680826091533&id=1692623841030572 If you know anything that will help find Bruce, please call Bendigo police on 5448 1300. Our volunteers have been assisting with this search and will be back out again tomorrow. ... We wish them the best of luck with a quick and positive result.

09.01.2022 Can you help? Our volunteers are currently working with volunteers from nearby units searching for this missing man, Bruce Evans. Please keep a look out and report any potential sightings and help us get him home safely.

08.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/BendigoAnimalWelfareandCommunit// We wanted to share a slightly different rescue that we helped out with this week. Large animal rescues are not our speciality by any means, but the circumstances of this situation meant we were able to lend a hand. ... When 30 year old ex race horse Connie got stuck and exhausted herself, it was important that she was assisted quickly and safely. Volunteers Darren and Scott worked under the direction of vet Dr Paul, who was able to place a sling around Connie so that our crews could slowly and carefully winch her out. Connie was then propped up on a hay bale until she was able to get herself back on to her feet. She had a couple of minor injuries due to her fall which are being treated. We wish her a speedy recovery and thank the team at Bendigo Animal Welfare and Community Services for the care they provide to beautiful creatures like Connie.

06.01.2022 Experience has shown that if we don't share these weather warnings with you, we get smashed. If we do, often they skip past us. As none of us want to miss watching the grand final tomorrow (or whatever we planned to do with our weekend), we've decided to share the warning in the hope the weather gods are kind and send us only rain rather than flash flooding. ... Please take the warning seriously, make your preparations, be safe and call us if you need help. 132 500 for storm emergencies, 000 if the situation is life threatening. Remember though, flash flooding is often gone before we can get there - you must be prepared to handle things yourself. That tune we shared recently? Bag it, block it, lift it and leave!

06.01.2022 Please take care out there folks. Our volunteers are currently on the way to our second rescue call out tonight. Both within Bendigo, within an hour and a half. ... Make way for the responding vehicles and take care on the wet roads.

06.01.2022 Although training has been modified quite a bit to comply with social distancing requirements, our volunteers are still out there maintaining our skills. Tonight was a refresher using our safe work at heights system. It was great to hang out with the gang - Sam in particular seemed to enjoy this ... He willingly stepped up to be our belaying subject - the others took great care to lower him very carefully!

05.01.2022 Sharing this warning from the BOM issued a few moments ago. Our area has the potential for thunderstorms tonight including some strong winds. We hope you have tied down all items, including trampolines, that may be blown around and into neighbouring properties. We suggest vehicles are moved under cover and not under trees. If you need our assistance please call 132500, 000 if your situation is life threatening.

05.01.2022 It would be easy to focus on the negatives today with a significant increase in COVID-19 cases in Victoria and the mandatory wearing of face coverings starting on Sunday night. In no way do we trivialise this situation, and as you can see were already complying with physical distancing, no contact and masking guidelines, but we also took a (very short) time out tonight to celebrate some milestones achieved by our volunteers. Long service awards recognise diligent and long ...and active service by our members. Tonight we celebrated Jarmon, Russell, Darren and Alex reaching 5 years of service, with Ricky achieving 10 years, and Brad a rather impressive 15 years. Well done to you all! Thats a lot of time supporting your community. Were also very excited to see past controller Ben receive the National Medal. This is awarded to members with long and diligent service who risk their own lives or safety to protect or assist the community in times of emergency or natural disaster. Normally this medal is awarded by the Governor General which of course is not currently possible, but this takes nothing away from Bens dedication to his community and over 15 years of service. We are proud of all of our volunteers who give their time, focus and leadership skills in service to others. Please join us in giving them all a hearty "good on you" and thanking their families and employers who allow them to do what they do. #wearepartofourcommunity

04.01.2022 Doing what we do, we ask this question of people every day, not just one day a year. And we listen to the answer. Its even more important right now. ... What a year weve had so far. Please reach out to friends, family, professionals, counselling services - anyone - if you need to talk.

03.01.2022 Were getting in early because we dont want to interrupt the breakfast in bed theyll all be enjoying tomorrow ..... To all our volunteers who hold the title of dad, granddad, pa, step dad, father in law, father figure, dad to human children or to fur children, and those who play the role of mum and dad combined - thank you for what you do for us and our community. And to everyone who supports them to do what they do to keep people safe, thank you for enabling these amazing... people to put their orange on again and again, no matter what the weather or the circumstances. We couldnt do what we do without you. Happy fathers day to you all.

03.01.2022 This latest warning has a bit more yellow on it and we're still in the warning area. There will be another update around 11pm tonight. Don't rely on this page for staying current with warnings - if we're not actually out on the truck responding to jobs, we'll either be in the Incident Control Centre managing the response, or sleeping soundly so we're ready to respond when the calls come in. ... Not much change in terms of expected rainfall and the winds are still pretty strong. If you can, put your cars under cover tonight, don't leave them under trees. Ensure the kids' trampolines are tied down and put away that outdoor furniture. Watch the video we shared yesterday to remember the jingle - Bag It, Block It, Lift It and Leave. As always, if you need emergency help with storm or flood events, we're only a call away. 132 500 - 000 if the situation is life threatening.

02.01.2022 Our mates at Marong SES attended this tree down traffic hazard job today. They unfortunately had a number of drivers choose to not slow down to a safe speed while going past their workplace, putting them in significant danger of being hurt, or worse. This is always disappointing to hear or experience ourselves. With three of four funerals for our fallen colleagues from VicPol having taken place over the past couple of days, and the final one scheduled for Monday, youd thin...k the safety of our emergency responders while working on the road would still be top of mind. While 40kmh is the law when passing an emergency vehicle with lights flashing, we understand this can at times be hard to do. Slowing down to a safe speed isnt. Thankfully they werent killed or hurt - this time.........

01.01.2022 The volunteers from Bendigo SES hope that everyone in our community is keeping safe and well in this challenging time. We wanted to share with you what happened last night. Four of our members responded to a request from a member of the public that a tree had fallen over Crusoe Road in Kangaroo Flat. The tree was blocking the entire road and posed a risk to road users. Whilst removing the tree another member of the public approached the SES volunteers and expressed his dis...pleasure that the crew were required to use a chainsaw to remove the tree as it had woken him up. It was explained that the chainsaw was required and that the crew were working as quickly as we could to remove the tree so we could clear the road and all go back to bed. The member of the public became increasingly hostile and threatening. Police were called and provided amazing support to our members removing the person impeding our crews efforts. Our crews volunteer their time to assist our community when they call for help like all of our emergency service colleagues and should not have to feel threatened whilst going about their job. We understand that stress levels are high at the moment but this does not excuse this type of behaviour. Please treat our members like you would your family as they are all someones family and should be able to go home as fit and well as they turned up. Thanks for your ongoing support and look after one another.

01.01.2022 We were successful with a grant application a little while ago which we used to buy a mule. Not a four legged equine type mule but a wheeled patient transport type mule. Its a really good bit of kit which saves our backs and those of our paramedic colleagues when a carry out over rough ground is required. ... Whether someone comes a cropper out in the bush when their horse bolts, they come off a mountain bike or trail bike, or simply become exhausted using some of our great bush tracks around our patch while walking the dog or prospecting, this clever piece of equipment takes the load off the people helping them get safely to medical assistance. And with so much wonderful nature around Bendigo to enjoy it gives us peace of mind knowing our community will benefit from its application when needed. We recommend always letting someone know where you plan to go and when you plan to return as well as taking water with you, a good map and sound local knowledge when going bush. Take care out there!

01.01.2022 With our friends from Marong SES attending the tragic pedestrian fatality near Shelbourne yesterday evening, waking up to these foggy conditions this morning we urge you all to take care on the roads today. Slow down, look twice, then a third time, and arrive late but alive. Stay safe!
