25.01.2022 Our wonderful supporters at Bendigo Toyota are going to help us yet again, turning the front of their dealership and service centre into a collection point for non-perishable food items donated by the public for those in need. Mark it in your diaries and tell your friends: Friday 20th November.
25.01.2022 What a great start to the year with this fantastic donation from Peter from Sebastopol of 22kgs of plums and peaches as well as 5kgs of plums from Robyn and Rohan. Thank you so much for your donation, we love getting fresh fruit and veges from our passionate local growers
24.01.2022 Thanks to the wonderful ceaseless efforts by all of you involved in any way with Bendigo Foodshare and all of our great supporters, with a brilliant submission by Cathie, we have an important announcement. Bendigo Foodshare has WON the Victorian Resilient Australia Awards - Community Category! We are joint winners with the Mallacoota RSL Sub-Branch! ... This makes a shared award with them so very special, given the horrific impact of the fires and the long recovery process on the community alongside people's needs during the pandemic. The official announcement. "Victorian 2020 winners - Community Award (joint winners): Mallacoota Recovers an initiative of the Mallacoota RSL Sub-Branch that considers how communities can better prepare and work together in good times and during critical times of need. This initiative demonstrated the ability to target community strengths, needs and priorities during the 2019-20 bushfires, and has been adapted to respond to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Resilient Central Victoria Rescues, Grows, Cooks and Shares for Food Security a food rescue initiative by Bendigo Foodshare in partnership with local government, volunteer agencies, businesses and industry. The initiative harnesses and enables community energy and resources, while using crowdfunding and other stakeholder support, in a flexible model which can be adapted by other communities."

23.01.2022 If you're out shopping this weekend at your local Coles, Woolworths or IGA store, remember to buy an extra pantry staple to support our food drive. Look out for the big yellow donation bin with our logo to pop it into. In the lead up to Christmas and with the growing number of people across Central Victoria doing it tough, contributing to our food drive with one or two items is more important than ever. Our food drive is running until the 18th December.
22.01.2022 This month Grill'd Bendigo will have three jars on the counter, each labelled with the names of three local community groups. One jar has 'Bendigo Foodshare' on it! When customers make their orders they are given a bottle top token to put in the jar labelled with the name of their favourite group. At the end of the month, the jar with the most tokens is donated $300 from Grill'd and the second and third placed jars receive $100. ... Take friends and family for a treat at Grill'd on the corner of Pall Mall and Bull Street and support us at the same time. Too easy! 22.01.2022 Paw Kee’s business Karen Lady Catering joined Cafes for COVID in Round 6, cooking 200 meals for those doing it tough across Central Victoria. We asked Paw Kee what the experience of cooking for Cafes for COVID has meant to her. I like helping people in the community who are in need of food relief. It has been hard for me to get a job cooking due to COVID’s restrictions. Cafes for COVID has given me the opportunity to continue doing what I love and makes me happy. And that is... cooking. Paw Kee is also a full time Mum to her three month old baby son. Her baby was born during lockdown restrictions with a severe complication. His stomach was connected to his airway, requiring him to have major surgery to correct the condition and two months of tube feeding. To make things even tougher, Paw Kee’s husband has been stuck overseas in Mynamar due to COVID restrictions. He not only missed the birth of his son, but he has been unable to physically support Paw Kee through the trauma that followed their son’s birth. Paw Kee was alone at the Royal Children’s Hospital by her baby’s bed, unable to have visitors due to COVID restrictions. Three months on, things are brighter, with Paw Kee and her baby back in Bendigo. Fortunately the feeding tubes are no longer required. Doing cooking makes me feel happy and productive alongside caring for my baby. I am very grateful to have this opportunity. The money I have been paid has enabled me to buy my baby a bed, a pram and some clothes." Paw Kee is excited to be participating in Round 7 of Cafes for COVID and hopes that the money she earns can contribute to the cost of her husband’s flight to Australia. I am very proud of myself and that I have been able to achieve all of this on my own. Paw Kee, you are an incredible woman! Thank you for sharing your heartfelt story and beautiful photos with us StreetSmart Australia #smartmeals
21.01.2022 Thank you, ABC Central Victoria!
21.01.2022 Today is the final day of our Mobile Christmas Food Pantry. The food pantry will be at The Salvation Army Bendigo, 65-71 Mundy Street, from 1pm-3pm. 21.01.2022 The Labor Government has announced that they are investing $3.5 million to build regional food hubs to increase the capacity of food relief storage and distribution services in regional Victoria. Yesterday we were very excited to hear that Bendigo Foodshare has been named as one of the five successful applicants. Our greatest need is a larger warehouse facility as we have outgrown our current premises. This funding announcement means we will get $400K towards the fit out of ...our proposed new premises in Garsed St Bendigo. The cost of the fitout required for our new premises has been estimated at $1.2M, so we will be launching a capital fundraising campaign to enable the project to be completed. Thank you for your continued support. Please join us in looking forward to a busy and pivotal year for food relief in Central Victoria. 21.01.2022 The food drive has begun!! Thanks Bendigo Toyota for kicking it off
21.01.2022 Here's two local food heroes of the pandemic: Abhishek Awasthi in his organising support for the local Muslim community and Tracey Clarke and the volunteers of Eaglehawk Community House feeding Eaglehawk.
20.01.2022 This is one amazing bunch - our team of volunteer drivers and food rescuers. Seven days a week, these volunteers are out on the road making over 96 supermarket and food business collections, and delivering food across our food relief network; around Bendigo, and out to Elmore, Echuca, Pyramid Hill, Avoca, Daylesford, Beaufort, Maryborough, to name a few ... these drivers cover some kms! A huge shout out of thanks to everyone in our driving team! Sometimes, things don't go to ...plan out on the country roads. Earlier this week, one of our dedicated delivery drivers, Peter Harrington, found himself stuck on the side of the road somewhere in Bagshot with a flat tyre. Without the blink of an eye, another of our amazing volunteers, Trevor Street, shot off to the aid of his mate. Peter was back on the road and able to deliver much needed food to help those in Elmore. Just another day at Bendigo Foodshare, where we might not know what will happen next, but we do know there's someone that has our back!
20.01.2022 The weather is warming up and the garden greens are ready to bolt! Before they do and go to seed, why not pick them, donate them to us and we will share them with our community? Yesterday, our manager Bridget picked a box of lettuce, silverbeet and spring onions from her own garden to take into work. They were immediately packed in an order, loaded into the van and taken to Bendigo Family & Financial Services Inc. - how's that for fresh! We hope they were enjoyed in fresh salad for someone's dinner or perhaps a salad sandwich for lunch? If you have extra greens, other veggies, fruit or even eggs from your patch to share, we'd love to receive them at the shed. Message us for more details.
19.01.2022 Missing live music? Looking for something to do tomorrow?

17.01.2022 This week we started something really exciting - a Grow a Row Donation Garden at Golden Gums Farm - Fresh Produce. With the generous support of Jeremy and Jess, and a small team of our wonderful volunteers, we are now growing fresh healthy veggies for food relief!! The team planted rainbow chard and spring onions and will look after these babies until they are ready to harvest for Bendigo Foodshare. We can't wait to see how this project grows - more food and veggie growing s...kills to improve food security within our community!! A big shout of thanks to Bendigo Bunnings Warehouse for getting us off and racing with seedlings and gardening tools for our volunteer team.

15.01.2022 "I love growing veggies but eating them all in time is the challenge! There is just so much growing and I hate seeing them go to waste." Madelaine has found the perfect solution and we are thankful she has! Today she visited the shed to donate a box of freshly picked lettuce, silverbeet and spring onions, including this magnificent lettuce. She says there is still plenty left for her to enjoy and is looking forward to her next donation. So are we Thanks, Maddy Killeen!

10.01.2022 FOR 20-year old Bendigo hospitality worker Tahlia and her housemates, the coronavirus pandemic has made accessing healthy and affordable food much harder and fraught with worry. We were all struggling, she said. Loss of work, reduced hours and lockdowns has meant that for these young people, having money for a weekly shop to fill the cupboard was near impossible.... We were a bit scared and for a few days had to ration food so we could get by, she said. For me, I’ve been worried about it for most of this year and my worries have increased. However, for Tahlia’s household, whilst they knew about Bendigo Foodshare, they didn’t feel like they could ask for help. I didn’t feel comfortable turning anywhere for support, out of shame and pride. Tahlia’s experiences are echoed in the results of Central Victoria’s first youth food poverty survey, commissioned by Bendigo Foodshare. It found that 71% of young people who responded have experienced some form of food insecurity in the last two years, yet only 12% sought support from a food bank. More troubling is that well over half of those (61%) who had experienced food insecurity in the last two years had experienced it since the coronavirus pandemic began, with worrying about paying for groceries their top concern. Throughout the study, local young people have shared their experiences and ideas about accessing food so we as an organisation can better understand. Now, we’re going to act on the results, and work with our partner organisations to develop new programs to meet young people where they are. Tahlia suggested that normalising the need to access food relief more would better support young people. Having Bendigo Foodshare spoken about more is going to help people my age be more comfortable to seek support. Thalia - thank you for sharing your story! Read the full report at https://bendigofoodshare.org.au/results-are-in-for-the-fir/ We thank researchers Imogen Holdsworth from Bastion Insights and Meg Young from ENGINE for conducting the research and preparing the final report pro-bono. We are also grateful to our project partners Yo Bendigo and BSA Bendigo for their support.

These were harvested in their school community garden, and will now be packed to support our community in the lead-up to Christmas. What's next to be grown in the Kalianna garden? Rainbow chard! If you'd like to grow a row of your own rainbow chard to support Bendigo Foodshare, send us a message - we've got some seedlings ready to go.

06.01.2022 This is no ordinary box of food. It's come from the pantry of someone who had extra supplies to get through lockdown. Now the 'use by' and 'best before' dates are getting closer, plus there's still plenty in the pantry, so this box is being donated to our Food Drive! YAY! Do you have extra you could share to help those doing it tough over Christmas? Bring it down to Bendigo Toyota TODAY for their drive through food drive!... 04.01.2022 The Bendigo Cleaning Company (TBCC) is one of our valued sponsors who is doing their bit to fight poverty through ethical employment and community outreach. They are an industry leader in sustainability, work-place safety, innovation, and ethical business practices. The Company was established in 2003 by Martin and Catherine Leach, who are now well supported by a team of over 90 experienced cleaners, technicians, leading hands, supervisors and administrators. TBCC continuall...y seeks to improve the standing of cleaners in the community and to show leadership in ethical employment practices. The cleaning industry can be known for underemployment, split shifts, poor employment practices and sham contracting. TBCC is working very hard to alleviate this by supporting the role of their cleaning staff and raising the standing of cleaners in the work force. Further, TBCC is scrupulous regarding paying correct award rates and entitlements, offering full and part time employment, and opportunities to increase work hours. Underemployment is a major contributor to food insecurity in the community, so the TBCC ethical work practices make them stand out in their field. TBCC have been supporters and generous sponsors of Bendigo Foodshare since 2016, and Martin was a valuable member of the Board from 2016 to 2019. TBCC continually support and build the Bendigo community by: buying from other local businesses and suppliers; employing and training local staff; investing in green technology and processes; and supporting more than 12 local clubs, charities, and events. Their practices have been recognised by being winners of the Bendigo Business Excellence Awards across several categories in 2010, 2016 and 2018, as well as many other prestigious industry awards over more than ten years. When COVID hit, Bendigo Foodshare was faced with the challenge of having to source and distribute more food using COVID-safe practices. Lead by Martin, the team at TBCC donated cleaning products and taught the Bendigo Foodshare team best-practice cleaning procedures to keep our warehouse, volunteers and food recipients as COVID-safe as possible. We thank TBCC for their support and look forward to continuing our relationship with Martin, Catherine and The Bendigo Cleaning Company well into the future.

03.01.2022 Bendigo Foodshare is excited to share with you news that we are finalists in the Victorian Resilient Australia Awards 2020! Our submission was focused on the amazing work and support that our volunteers and entire community have given us during COVID to continue sourcing and distributing food during trying times. We'd especially like to commend the commitment of our new and existing volunteers, through projects like Farmers for Food Relief, Cafes for Covid, Help Your Neighbou...r and the Bendigo Community Food Pantry. We really value your contribution in helping us to help those doing it tough across Central Victoria. Please join us to celebrate this achievement at the Victorian Resilient Awards online Award Ceremony this Friday 30th from 2pm - 3pm. 01.01.2022 The fruit harvested from apricot, plum and apple trees in this orchard will be shared with the owner, Bendigo Community Fruit volunteers and Bendigo Foodshare through an amazing community project run by Bendigo Community Fruit . Thanks guys, we can’t wait! The aim of this project is to help people in their gardens; learn how to care for fruit trees including netting, control of fruit fly and pruning; and share in delicious harvest rewards. If you would like to know more about how to get involved, send Nicole Porter or Bendigo Community Fruit a message. If you have a bumper fruit harvest this year and have excess to share, please think about donating some to us at Bendigo Foodshare
