25.01.2022 (we found two great concreters!) so we're going to give it another shot and put a call out for someone to 'seal' our recently laid concrete slab. This is PAID work Our 21 square slab was going to be sealed by our volunteers but with a number of things that could go wrong, we've decided to put the call out for someone that has the necessary knowledge and skills required to give our slab a smooth finish with 'gloss' for ease of mopping.... Requirements: experienced and qualified in doing this sort of work can provide a written quote on business letterhead will be able to provide a tax invoice and equally important, can do asap Interested? Please call 0417 382 741 to organise a time to view the job. Know someone that might be interested in doing? Please tag them. Our cats are really looking forward to getting back out into their outdoor area again! BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

23.01.2022 THIS cute as a button senior is currently enjoying time in BAWCS Boarding Kennels and Cattery whilst her long term foster carers are away on a well deserved break from COVID-19 lockdown. There's more to this story though. Thanks to this dog owner making provision in her Will for her beloved pet, Marcey, at 13 years old is safe for the rest of her life in permanent long term foster care, not wanting for anything, surrounded by love even after her owner has passed.... As a senior, your chances of being rehomed aren't that great, especially because potential adopters often don't want to take on a dog that 1. may not have a long life and 2. usually have health issues associated with age which can be expensive. Marcey's 'mum' is resting peacefully now, and as she looks down, she can see that her beautiful girl who she made provision for, is being well looked after. is another service we offer to ensure the safety of pets when their owners are no longer able to care for them. Don't leave the worry to family and friends about what will happen to your pets when you pass. By making a Will in which provision is provided, there is no uncertainty. 22.01.2022 BAWCS Shelter is often contacted by concerned members of the public about 'free to good home' ads given the reports of dogs sometimes ending up in the wrong hands leading to far from a 'good home'. Unfortunately it is impossible for us to take on every dog reported to us so this post is to try to educate those thinking of advertising 'free to good home'. THERE are many 'free to good home' dog ads on Gumtree and other online services.. Whilst this may seem an easy way to reho...Continue reading

21.01.2022 you dispose of your masks appropriately. That means not throwing them on the ground where they may impact on wildlife. Whilst this photo is of a mallard in the UK, Australia also has this species of duck. https://bit.ly/33o8n0k More about PPE and the impact if not disposed of appropriately from Wildlife.net... "An estimated 194 billion disposable masks and gloves are being used worldwide every month as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to a study in Environmental Science and Technology. Most single use PPE is made from a variety of plastics, including polypropylene, polyethylene and vinyl and can not only tangle around wildlife, such as this Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) but can remain in marine ecosystems for 450 years before fully decomposing". credit Joanne Corkill and Ben Holmes BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

21.01.2022 wonderful time of the year and also magpie swooping season. Here are some interesting facts, including only male magpies swoop, from Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network that you may not be aware of and some tips for living with magpies during this time. Watch Out! Spring is swooping season! ... Currently birds are nesting and defending their chicks and one that can be of the most concern to some people is the beautiful iconic magpie. Male Magpies swoop people because they are protecting their chicks, but also because the person walking or riding by reminds the bird of someone who disturbed them in the past. Magpies have very long memories and do remember faces! Most Magpies don't swoop people. Females don't swoop at all because they are busy sitting on the eggs, and only 12% of male Magpies are aggressive. These few males only swoop for six weeks while their chicks are in the nest. Understandably, these dads are just being protective of their babies. If you have a swooping magpie nearby try to avoid the area, the best way to protect yourself from a swooping bird is to avoid venturing into their territory. If you must pass through the area: Move quickly but do not run. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses outdoors to protect your face and eyes Cyclists should wear a helmet, dismount and walk through the area. Don’t interfere with or throw stones at birds. This gives them added reason to see humans as a threat and may increase swooping behaviourand they will remember you! If you find any wildlife you feel needs assistance, you can call local wildlife carers Lyn 0419 209 349 / Neil 0427 301 401 / WRIN 0419 356 433 or Wildlife Victoria on 03 8400 7300. 17.01.2022 has attracted alot of attention since being listed for adoption at BAWCS Shelter. It's not such an easy process for some felines when they come into the Shelter and Daisy is a testament to the challenges. Originally adopted out by us two years ago, Daisy had been living a wonderful life (with the support of medication for excessive 'licking' behaviour leading to bald patches!!). ... Daisy has returned to BAWCS due to her 'mum' going into 'care' and no longer being able to look after her. (BAWCS Shelter Adoption policy enables protection for our adoptees should their future be challenged.) We have been managing Daisy's licking and are thinking a change of enviornment/ understanding and acceptance of her behaviour will be the right fit for her. A 'trial' is mandatory to ensure the best fit her Daisy. Interested? Apply here https://www.bawcs.org.au/listings?page=1 Chip # 956000008321734 Source # BR101543 BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

17.01.2022 : Back in November 2016 BAWCS Shelter volunteers made a trip to Ararat Dog Pound to pick up a beautiful dog named Clyde. https://bit.ly/32GQyso Clyde was already desexed so had been owned by someone at some stage. Why he wasn't reclaimed we will never know but that is all history now. Originally adopted in January 2017, it wasn't the right fit so under ' ' ', Clyde was welcomed back with ope...n arms and waited patiently (always safe) until the right fit did come along in August 2017. Clyde is still 'living the dream' with this latest update from his 'parents'. 08.01.2022 LATEST UPDATE on our precious Sanctuary resident Connie https://bit.ly/34RGjkV . After getting into alittle trouble 5 weeks ago, https://bit.ly/2G6Mo54 we've seen a pretty horrendous infected wound finally heal to the point of Connie finally being able to leave the confinement of her yard. It's been pretty full on making sure she received everything needed including several onsite vet visits for initial flushing (sedation required), antibiotic injections, pain relief, in...novative use of a fly veil to keep flies away and insect repellant spray for extra protection. She's been abit cranky (understandably) being confined and being a 'water girl' which is what got her into trouble in the first place, we had to change out her water container to a much larger one so she couldn't knock it over to play in the 'mud' created. Just a heads up for those that may be abit squeamish, the video contains images of the wound towards the end of the video. When BAWCS Sanctuary takes in a soul in need, it is for life regardless of what is required. We are delighted to have her back to her happy self and take strength in the resilience of this almost 30 year old ex racehorse that could have had a much different outcome had she not ended up with us. 07.01.2022 , especially when so close to Christmas and people are looking for unique things to buy for gifts. Yvonne has a lovely property with Bendigo National Park all around so there is alot of wildlife coming and going. She has a passion for photography and came up with an idea to create two photo books. One sells for $35 with $10 going to BAWCS, the smaller one sells for $20 with $5 for BAWCS. The rest cover...s printing costs (Yvonne is not making money out of these herself). Yvonne has been selling the books to family, friends and BAWCS FB posted to promote mid October, https://bit.ly/3l4kZPX which has resulted in 39 books (17 big and 22 small books) being sold so far!. Like to know more? Over to Yvonne to explain.... "These two photo books have been created as a fund raiser for BAWCS. They are light enough to post inexpensively, interesting for all ages from small children through to the elderly, including anyone who loves animals and birds or nature. Lovely colours, and a rare chance to see peaceful and happy kangaroo and bird life up close in their own environment. And all taken within metres of our supporter's home which has Bendigo National Park all around. A fantastic warm and fuzzy Christmas or birthday present, or to keep for your own coffee table book, it is likely to remain of interest over the years. There is a choice of a 24 page 11 x 8 inch hardcover book for $35, and a 22 page 5 x 7 inch softcover for $20. @. (during daylight hours) " Thank you Yvonne! BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

05.01.2022 , Cossy's mum got the phone call she had been desperately hoping for. Who is Cossy? Back story https://bit.ly/3c6dyol After almost a full week since going missing, Cossy had been sighted and his mum couldn't get in the car quick enough to go and find him. ... 1km from where he was sighted by the truck driver who'd recognised Cossy from the flyer that had ended up in his mail box earlier in the week, Cossy's mum saw her little dog, pulled over, opened the car door and after Cossy looked at her as if to see 'what took you so long'....jumped into the car. His family were amazing in the efforts they went to, dropping flyers, advertising in local papers, contacting Pounds, vets, taking out FB paid ads, sharing far and wide on many lost pet FB pages and of course contacted BAWCS Shelter where Cossy was originally adopted from as a pup 8 years ago. Cossy's mum has reported he is well, although lost alittle weight and was being taken to the vet for a check over. to everyone that cared and shared. We are so delighted this little man is back home safe and sound and won't be travelling in a car with the window down again! BAWCS 'caring with compassion'

05.01.2022 "Fifty-thousand Tasmanian farmed salmon have made a dash for freedom after a rare fire in a commercial aquaculture enclosure off Tasmania island's coast". Sounds great for the salmon right? Unfortunately no. Full story here https://ab.co/3fraCEh... .... "Australia's largest salmon farmer, Tassal, currently uses 2 kg of wild caught fish, such as anchovies and sardines, to produce just 1 kg of farmed salmon. There's no other way to say it " "The Australia Marine Conservation Society suggest that it can take between 10 and 20 kgs of wild caught fish to produce just 1 kg of tuna" ' Animals Australia. Welfare issues for 'farmed' salmon - fish live cramped and stressful lives. In fact, research on salmon in farms has found that 1 in 4 experience brain chemistry and behaviour identical to that of severely depressed people, and can be seen floating lifelessly at the surface. The crowded environments are also a risk for the physical health of these fish. Disease is common and can spread rapidly. But instead of giving fish more space, many farms instead feed them antibiotics, which the World Health Organisation has warned is contributing to the threat of antibiotic-resistance in humans (ie. 'superbugs'). Whilst around the world and here in Australia, farms are trying to reduce or eliminate antibiotics in farmed animals, Tassal recently made headlines for quadrupling its use of antibiotics in fish. "In the past, environmentally-conscious people might have turned to farmed fish in an effort to preserve our oceans and marine life. But given the strain that 'fishmeal' for farmed fish puts on our oceans, the opposite is true. The most powerful thing an individual can do for our oceans is to avoid eating fish altogether". 04.01.2022 and long manes from Winter, permanent BAWCS Sanctuary resident Monkey is hitting his 'groove' and doing a great Tina Turner impersonation with his long mane. There aren't that many 'rescue' options for horses (no matter how big or small you are) so we were delighted to have had room to take on Monkey (our vet who 'snipped' him named him) to give him a safe long term home. Interesting, another vet had suggested NOT castrating him because of his 'colour...'. We of course were mortified to hear this as there as so many horses (miniature or otherwise) born that do not have a great future due to breeding based on financial worth. Yes, horses do require ongoing financial commitment and at BAWCS Sanctuary, you don't have to be providing a 'return' for your keep. Like to keep our 'freeloaders' happy? Petition deets here "The following residents of the ACT draw to the attention of the Assembly that the horse racing industry is out of step with community expectations in the ACT. Despite protestations about jobs and loving their animals the primary motivator is financial and personal success and glory for the trainers and owners not the horses. Horses lead an unnatural and restricted life while racing, and at worst end up as wastage in an industry that has no more use for them. They are stabled most of the day, unable to graze and suffer horrific injuries, occasionally visible, such as the 7 horses that have died during the Melbourne Cup over the last 7 years, but mostly hidden from public view. The extreme mental and physical suffering these sentient beings experience for fun is not acceptable to most Canberrans. The conditions they live and die under, all at the behest of an industry with questionable ethics and subject to allegations of links with organised crime, goes against community expectations. Canberrans do not want to prop up this cruelty any longer. Your petitioners, therefore, request the Assembly to call upon the Government to withdraw all public funding (understood to be in the vicinity of $6 million annually) to Thoroughbred Park. This money should be redirected to support Canberra’s arts and entertainment industry, where animals are not exploited or abused." SIGN HERE https://bit.ly/33cQiBK BAWCS 'caring with compassion'
