23.01.2022 A La Trobe uni student has used her experience with autism spectrum disorder to give an artistic glimpse into life with the condition. Danika Tayte's filled the walls of a room with twisting, continuous lines, creating a dizzying and overwhelming experience.

22.01.2022 A great podcast series on the importance of embracing Autistic people and the way we interact with the world! Very excited to see parents connecting with Autistic adults and young people who can provide first-hand insight into the condition, and how best to support people who are neuro-diverse!

16.01.2022 We are fans of Hannah and her powerful narrative style of comedy. "Everyone understands the coming-out story now: It is part of popular culture. But women with autism is a very niche experience. I can’t predict how people are going to respond."

14.01.2022 RESPECTFUL RESOURCES FOR TALKING TO YOUR YOUNG PERSON ABOUT THEIR AUTISM DIAGNOSIS We have many parents & carers in our I CAN community who are looking for res...ources on how to talk to their children about Autism and/or being Autistic in a way that is respectful, accurate and validating. Below are some outstanding, free, Autistic-led resources to support these discussions (list is not exhaustive): From Reframing Autism, "Talking To Children About Autism." Dr. Melanie Heyworth, an Autistic mother of three Autistic young people, provides a step-by-step guide on how to introduce and normalise differences from a very young age and help Autistic children embrace who they are. Webinar includes many references to additional resources (youtu.be/dITOILBK8V4). A shorter, accessible overview can be found here: youtu.be/1IqPfHvCoSo. From the The Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a fabulous resource we share often, "Welcome To The Autistic Community." There is a version specifically for adolescents (tinyurl.com/yaqu6eqh) and a more comprehensive version (all audiences) that was released in April 2020 (autisticadvocacy.org/book/welcome-to-the-autistic-community) NEW: From Dr. Wenn Lawson, a wonderful "TedB" talk on "What It Means To Be Autistic" (youtu.be/gHe7nOIeKpE). Geared toward Autistic young people. NEW: From our I CAN team, "Nurturing Self-Esteem & Pride in Autistic Young People" (www.icannetwork.com.au//nurturing-self-esteem-pride-in-aut). This piece is aimed at parents, carers, teachers and other adults. NEW: From our I CAN team, "Important Reminders & Resources For Our Younger Autistic Peers" (www.icannetwork.com.au//important-reminders-resources-for-) Many Autistic young people find it helpful and reassuring to learn from the stories of other Autistic young people. Here are just a few of those stories: From ABC TV + iview, "What It's Like...Living On The Autism Spectrum" (tinyurl.com/yadgt7ab). Currently only available in Australia but should soon be available soon on related YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/abc3). The 2011 Award Winning CBBC segment, "My Autism & Me," narrated by 13-year-old Rosie King (youtu.be/ejpWWP1HNGQ). Be sure to also check out Rosie's 2014 TED talk, "How Autism Freed Me To Be Myself" (tinyurl.com/nkd2cdr). From Jake Holland, a former I CAN mentee who is now a mentor, via our "Humans On The Autism Spectrum" series: www.icannetwork.com.au//humans-on-the-autism-spectrum-jake (more profiles available on our Grapevine blog : www.icannetwork.com.au/category/grapevine). From 11-year-old Cadence (I am Cadence - Growing Up Unique) via Reframing Autism, a self-directed documentary, "Bouncing Words," in which she shares her reflections on communication as a non-speaking Autistic young person (youtu.be/Yiubc3EmwgQ). From 7-year-old Sky of My Autistic Sparkle (YouTube), "Being Autistic & How It Feels" (youtu.be/mWbvptPdnW8). From Alex Bittner (Seriously Not Boring), "Autism & Acceptance As Explained By A 10-Year-Old" (youtu.be/igyyFQx9Ja0).

14.01.2022 A great resource to help improve communication between everyone!

11.01.2022 Once we are aware of people’s sensory sensitivities, we can learn to accomodate for them and with them. This highlights how a little understanding goes a long way

11.01.2022 Via Samantha Connor Disabled folk and their families - Please get behind the call from Senator Jordon Steele-John for an urgent video about a Royal Commission and why it is important to you. Tiny window of opportunity and NOW is the time that you can make your voice heard. Do it for the hundreds of disabled people who have died as a result of violence, abuse and neglect in the past four years since a Senate report was handed down in 2015. For those whose names we have read e...very year and for those who are still trapped in institutional settings where they are subject to violence. For those who have gone before us - and for yourself and your child or children. Make them hear us. Message from Jordon to disabled Australians - 'Folks - this morning I sent Scott Morrison draft terms of reference for a Royal commission into disability abuse. There are absolutely no excuses left. We have to keep on the pressure - on Monday, the Government must buckle and support my motion so we can move forward. I've got an ask - can you send me and my team a short video explaining why this is so important to you? The Government MUST hear our lived experience and allyship, they cannot ignore it if we yell en mass. Comment below if you can, or shoot my team an email at [email protected]' image description - a bunch of white flowers is held next to a list of names of dead disabled people. The image was taken at the White Flower Memorial in 2015, on the day the Senate report was handed down

09.01.2022 A really great resource for helping to express emotions that might otherwise be hard to find the right words for

08.01.2022 Heading back to school can result in a lot of overload for Autistic students. We appreciate the suggestions in this meme, courtesy of Aspergers Reality, with an... emphasis on "Love, Support & Understanding." For some very valuable Autistic insights on helping your Autistic child or student cope with overload, please check out our recent, free webinar on "Supporting Autistic Learners:" https://bit.ly/2MJz3Pi.

08.01.2022 Had to share this one, just shows how important it is to recognise how autistic people perceive the world from a different angle, as it widens everyone’s perspective when we can communicate them with each other

07.01.2022 Some wise words from Max, on what’s so great about a normal life anyway! Worth a read :)

03.01.2022 For people assigned female at birth (AFAB), it can be really hard for their autism to be recognised and accepted. Hopefully this will continue to change with more representation of autistic people in our communities and media :)

01.01.2022 Sometimes it can be hard to know what do you once you have identified an emotion, this is a nice brief guide to help you out! Especially if you have sensory issues, it can be good to identify some quick actions you can take to distract or reduce sensory overwhelm :)
