21.01.2022 I am sure there is a Wonder Woman cape under Claire's beekeeping suit. Claire and her husband Paul - AKA The Good Life Farm Co - also manage a flock of pasture raised chickens which produce the most extraordinary golden eggs and employ local chefs to produce the quality fresh pasta which is available at our weekly Thursday Mini Market at The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery from 3pm - 5.30pm. https://www.abc.net.au//malmsbury-beekeeping-prog/12899432

19.01.2022 ** KNOW WHO GROWS YOUR FOOD! ** Meet Peter, the producer behind the Nuggetty Garlic! Hailing from Alice Springs, he’s been growing garlic for a decade now on his 45-acre property just outside of Maldon. Most of it is rough granite land; two acres is all he says he needs to produce the garlic he sells at the farmers’ market. He likes that the remainder stays rugged. He’s been growing the same variety of garlic since day one, with seeds coming from a variety imported from the U...S ten years prior. So, you could say his garlic has a 20-year family tree. He’s not certified organic but can attest to many, many, many hours of weeding! The weeds are better managed now since the early days but even back then, he saw no need to use chemicals. All garlic is free of pesticides, herbicides and artificial fertiliser. Annual crops go into the soil in April with harvest beginning in November. Freshly harvested garlic can be used, skin and all, when the skin is soft and the flavour is mild; otherwise two weeks of drying will see the skin harden and flavour of the garlic develop. The flavour will continually develop over time. There is a gap in supply of a few months when the garlic begins to sprout ready for planting (it naturally knows when it’s time due to the length of the days) and the next harvest so if you want a continual supply, Peter suggests stocking up before the garlic sprouts, peel them and keep the cloves in the freezer. It’s not the most ideal way but better than the garlic you buy from the jar. (I couldn’t agree more!) Selling through the farmers’ markets, Peter admits to being addicted to filling a need within his community and seeing how much people appreciate his garlic. It brings him happiness. Shoppers return knowing the garlic is of quality and they appreciate knowing who grows their food. Peter’s message to shoppers? ‘Don’t be afraid, you’re buying a quality product. Life will be better.’ You’ll find Peter at: - Our weekly Thursday Mini Market at The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery & Café from 3pm 5.30pm - Our Saturday market on 12th December from 9am 1pm at the Bendigo Pony Club; corner Breen Street and Belle Vue Road, Golden Square. Garlic is priced at $45 per/kg and can be purchased in knots and small bags. Individual bulbs are priced at $4 each. He has a loyal following of shoppers so if you are keen to try Peter’s garlic for the first time, I would recommend you get shopping sooner rather than later as he does sell out each season!
