23.01.2022 Self care is a vital part of maintaining good health and a vibrant life. It’s a way of living that incorporates behaviors that help you to be refreshed, repleni...sh your personal motivation, and grow as a person. Wellness is an interactive process of becoming aware of and practicing healthy choices to create a more successful and balanced lifestyle. Wellness is: A direction in which by its nature, moves us toward a more proactive, responsible and healthier existence. The integration of the body, mind, and spirit. The loving acceptance of ourselves today and speaking into ourselves for who we choose to become tomorrow. Choice living; a compilation of the daily decisions we make that lead us to that person we choose to become. As we to move out the latest phase of isolation and begin to reconnect with those around us, now is a great time to look at ones wellness and change potential negatives that may have taken hold whilst isolated. 19.01.2022 Today the President of the Bendigo District RSL commemorated National Malaya & Borneo Veterans with a closed wreath laying ceremony at the forecourt of the Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Institute Military Museum. 31st August marks the Anniversary of the declaration of the end of the Indonesian Confrontation. Between 1962 and 1966 Indonesia and Malaysia fought a small, undeclared war which came to involve troops from Australia, New Zealand, and Britain. The conflict resulted from ...Indonesia’s President Sukarno’s belief that the creation of the Federation of Malaysia, which became official in September 1963, represented a British attempt to maintain colonial rule behind the cloak of independence granted to its former colonial possessions in south-east Asia. The antagonism that gave rise to Confrontation was already apparent in December 1962, when a small party of armed insurgents, with Indonesian backing, attempted to seize power in the independent enclave of Brunei, only to be defeated by British troops from Singapore. By early 1963 military activity had increased along the Indonesian side of the border in Borneo, as small parties of armed men began infiltrating Malaysian territory on propaganda and sabotage missions. These cross-border raids, carried out by Indonesian volunteers, continued throughout 1963. By 1964 Indonesian regular army units had also become involved. Australian units that fought during Confrontation did so as part of a larger British and Commonwealth force under British command. Australia’s commitment to operations against Indonesia in Borneo and West Malaysia fell within the context of its membership in the Far East Strategic Reserve. The military situation in Borneo thus far had consisted of company bases located along the border between Indonesia and Malaysia to protect centres of population from enemy incursions. By 1965 the British government had given permission for more aggressive action, and security forces now mounted cross-border operations with the purpose of obtaining intelligence and forcing the Indonesians to remain on the defensive on their own side of the border. Uncertain where the Commonwealth forces might strike next, the Indonesians increasingly devoted their resources to protecting their own positions and less on offensive operations, although these continued on a much reduced scale. Continuing negotiations between Indonesia and Malaysia ended the conflict, and the two sides signed a peace treaty in Bangkok in August 1966. Twenty-three Australians were killed during Confrontation, seven of them on operations, and eight were wounded. Because of the sensitivity of the cross-border operations, which remained secret at the time, Confrontation received very little coverage in the Australian press. 13.01.2022 Today is the Battle of Australia Day. Every year on the first Wednesday of September, Australians commemorate the Battle for Australia and reflect on the braver...y of those who served on Australia's home front, and the islands, the seas and in the skies to the north. It's an important reminder of a challenging time for Australians between 1942 and 1945. Thousands of Australians were engaged in actions against Japanese forces during the Battle for Australia. This includes those who served to defend the Australian mainland against attacks. Battle for Australia Day commemorates the first time in Australian history that Australia came under direct attack. It's a time for us to recognise those who served in the defence of the Australian mainland, and in land, air and sea battles in the Coral Sea, Papua and New Guinea. These actions stopped the Japanese southward advance. Their efforts contributed substantially to the defeat of Japan. Thank you to all those who served during that time. Lest We Forget. If someone says they’re not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

12.01.2022 Unfortunately, during one of the most difficult times in the history of the Bendigo District RSL due to our current closure, we have had people help themselves to property belonging to the Sub-Branch. The first banner was stolen on the morning of Sunday 23 August at 5am. The second banner was stolen on the evening of Wednesday 26 August at 7.26pm.... These banners are of absolutely no use to anyone other than the Bendigo District RSL and adds further unnecessary expense to replace them. The management and committee would like to offer the opportunity for the people involved to return the banners, no questions asked. Artwork of the banners is pictured below.

01.01.2022 Saying thank you to our service men and women who served during the Second World War, either overseas or on home soil, is something we should all take the time ...to do as a community particularly this year as 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Acknowledging the significance of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs produced a Commemorative Medallion and Certificate of Commemoration that has been made available to every living veteran of the Second World War. We are so fortunate to have 30 of the some one million Australians who served in WWII still with us today as part of the Bendigo District RSL. Over the past week Bendigo District RSL Sub-Branch President Peter Swandale and Health & Welbeing Officer Craig were able to present some of our surviving Second World War members their medallions and certificates. What an honour and privilege to meet and present them with the Second World War 75th anniversary commemorative medallions and to hear their amazing stories. Stories from having punishments lessened due to sourcing a supply of cream, to what it was like to be in a Matilda Tank in the jungles of Bougainville hearing the War was over and the emotions attached to that. While we can never repay the debt we owe almost one million Australians who served, this medallion and certificate are a small but meaningful way we can say thank you to the veterans of the largest global conflict of the 20th century and remind us as veterans of today we truly do stand in the footsteps of giants.
