25.01.2022 Room 6 students went on the first excursion for this year last week, since Covid-19 restrictions permitted. We went to the Kangaroo Flat Library for story time with Hayley, where we listened to her read some books, sang some songs and played some games. We then had a tour of the brand new Library and all the fun and engaging facilities. Everyone was fantastic at ‘Acting Safely’ while walking to and from the library. While in the Library students were also g...reat at ‘Showing Respect’ by being outstanding representatives of Bendigo SDS. We can’t wait to get back to the library in the new year! https://www.ncgrl.vic.gov.au/libraries/kangarooflat

24.01.2022 During Term 1 in STEAM our focus is ‘Physical Sciences - Understanding the nature of forces and motion’. Students have been participating in a range of differentiated lessons, experiments and activities to help them gain an understanding of how an object’s motion is influenced by a range of forces such as friction, magnetism, and gravity. This week PLC 5 students conducted an experiment to see how different surfaces affect the speed of a toy car. PLC 4 Students observed and participated in an experiment to see how a range of balls moved across different textured surfaces.

23.01.2022 Roll up roll up, to the Bendigo SDS Circus! Today we have had lots of fun celebrating The Arts with Music, Drama and Dance. We have also been celebrating our love of books and literacy. Each class has watched the story below, which is based on our Shared Reading model of developing, Comprehension, Vocabulary and Fluency.... When we are teaching this in classrooms we start with a text to self-connection. "I am listening to a story about the Circus" or "I have been to a circus before and I saw..." or "I understand that a circus has many features, and they are... Next, we have a text-to-text connection. "Mmm, do we know any other stories about a circus?" or "I am wondering if you have seen a circus on TV or youtube?" Then, there are text-to-world connections. These are a bit trickier. "I am wondering if you know about different types of circus's around the world. Let's research this and see if we can identify their different features." Therefore, this one book can be used meaningfully across our whole school for students of all abilities. You could take the opportunity to share this clip with your child and make a text-to-home connections. Happy Listening.

23.01.2022 We are very sorry to hear of the passing of the great Subzero yesterday, just 1 month shy of his 32nd birthday. Subbie was a Melbourne Cup winning horse whose achievements and legacy after retirement were arguably even more profound. With his owner and best friend Graham Salisbury by his side, Subbie travelled all over Victoria, visiting schools, hospitals and aged care homes. Subbie could be playful and ‘chatty’ , answering questions with a nod or shake of his head, but he a...lso had the innate ability to be a gentle comfort to the unwell , elderly and disabled when visiting hospitals, hospices and Very Special Kids. We were very fortunate to have Subbie visit us at Bendigo Special Developmental School on two occasions, the most recent being April 2016. Subbie had been quite unwell in the months leading up to that visit so his school visits had been reduced, but Graham knew how beneficial a visit from Subbie could be so once he was well again they made the trip from Heathcote. It was incredible to see how Subbie interacted with our students and the joy they received from his cheeky and playful personality, for example, nodding when they asked if he had a girlfriend. Students who were not usually fond of animal interactions were also drawn to Subbie and he would stand quietly while they patted him or lean in to nuzzle those who were in a wheelchair. Subbie’s beloved Graham passed away in June this year and now they are reunited again. We extend our sincere condolences to Graham’s wife Anita, daughter Nikki and son Anthony. Vale Subzero. 13.01.2022 THERAPIST SPOT Students with communication difficulties require different communication aids, also known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to help their understanding and expressive communication. ... At Bendigo Special Developmental School, we use various unaided and aided AAC tools such as Key Word Signs, visual timers, visual scripts, picture communication symbols (PCS) and the Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) communication books for students' receptive and expressive communication development. Did you know that there are many ways that you can get your child the right type of AAC for home through National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)? For example, low-cost AAC (up to$1500) can be purchased via the Core Support budget under the Consumables subcategory and highly individualised items can come from the Assistive Technology category. 13.01.2022 NAIDOC Week celebrations are usually held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. However, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was postponed until November. The NAIDOC Week theme for 2020 is Always Was, Always Will Be. The theme recognises and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. To begin NAIDOC week at BSDS stude...nts and staff will participate in watching the online Flag Raising event held by Bendigo Council and Dja Dja Wurrung. During the week students will explore and learn about our rich cultural history of First Nations Peoples through a number of fun and educational hands on activities, some may be researching facts about our Traditional Lands, and about the history of famous Indigenous peoples. This week is a time for celebrations and coming together, so enjoy NAIDOC week and have fun. From your Koorie Liaison Support at BSDS, Fiona.

07.01.2022 Exciting news!!! Our school has recently made two aided language displays available. These aided language displays are used to supplement other augmentative and alternative systems (AAC) already in place (e.g. single picture communication cards, PODD communication books, key word signs and proloquo2go app on an ipad). They are useful visual communication tools that staff use to support students' understanding and their expressive language outside of the clas...sroom. This YouTube video explains what why modelling is essential for students learning to use AAC to communicate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXj1Btf0qFw Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to anything that is used to replace (alternative) or add to (augmentative) verbal communication. We all use AAC every day e.g. when we use tone of voice, gestures and body language, street signs and other symbolic communication such as catalogues. Successful and functional communication is possible without speech. Imagine that you can only say 10- 20 words, the amount of communication would be extremely limited. Many of our students can communicate more using AAC than they can using speech. If we insist that our students communicate only using speech, we restrict the amount of ideas and thoughts that they can express and their ability to contribute ideas in class would be significantly reduced.

06.01.2022 A message from Meg & Baxter regarding the 'Parent to Parent' WebEx meeting today: Great to catch up with a small number of parents today via webex. It was a new way to connect, but useful. A chance for parent sharing, between new families and those that have been with us for many years. Interesting to see the different experiences and choices parents /carers are making for their families at this time. It was really clear that every family situation and make up is dif...ferent and needs different resources. Well done to everyone whether you are sending your young person to school, or working with them at home, keep up the good work. Remember everyday is a new day, sometimes we need to write a day off and start again the next. Keep in touch, if you would like to chat or discuss a concern please feel free to call Me, Mon, Wed and Thu. Or any ideas on how we could help you stay connected, I would love to hear from you!
