25.01.2022 The Bendigo Sports Star Awards have a long and rich history spanning over 55 years. The awards are the longest-running awards of their kind in Australia. While sport is on hold for the time being we thought it would be a great chance to look back and showcase the yearly winners (in no particular order) from when the awards kicked off in 1965. Let's kick off with the king of the water, Glenn Ashby. Ashby grew up sailing with his brother and sister at Bendigo Yacht Club.... In 1996 at 18, Glenn went overseas for the first time in his life. Competing at the A-Class Worlds in Spain against 86 others, he won. Gelnn was the Bendigo Sports Star of the year twice, in 96-97 and 97-98. He was awarded the monthly winner 7 times!!! Since 1997 and 98 Glenn has continued to compete in the sport of sailing. He went to the Olympics in 2008 and won a sliver medal with team mate Darren Bundock. In November 2018 he won his 10th A class Catamaran World Championship and 17th World Championship in total. in 2019 Gelnn competed in his 4th America’s Cup having won the last event as Skipper for Emirates Team New Zealand on the AC 50 Catamaran in Bermuda. He is currently living and based in Auckland New Zealand with his wife and 2 daughters in preparation for the the defense of the Americas Cup in 2021. What a star!!!

24.01.2022 TOP 10 SPORTS STAR HALL OF FAME Since its inception in 1993 a total of 44 sportsmen and women have been inducted into the Sports Star Hall of Fame. Bendigo Sports Star committee members Morrie Hesse and John Forbes couldn't be prouder of all 44 athletes that have been inducted.... However, out of the inductees Forbes and Hesse have selected their top 10 based on achievements at Olympic, Commonwealth and Empire Games, world championships, Australian titles, state level titles and local achievements, read all about them below .

23.01.2022 Netball Superstar Sharelle McMahon won the Bendigo Sports Star of the Year in 1998-99 and 1999-00. She was the youngest member of the Australian netball team which won the netball gold medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. Can anyone remember watching it live? McMahon captained the Vixens from its inaugural season in 2008 until 2011, she officially retired at the end of the 2013. In October 2016, she was inducted as an Athlete Member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. What an amazing career on the netball court, and what an inspiration to all the young netballers in Central Victoria.
