24.01.2022 We had a great time visiting Safescape during our Girls in STEAM Electric Car Project Industry tour last week! Girls from Bendigo South East College and Girton Grammar School toured Safescape's Bortana production line, a battery-electric vehicle designed to handle the aggressive operating environment of underground mines. "Looking at the recent developments in the car industry, electric cars are definitely on the rise. I wanted to have a look at where the future is heading. T...he program is jam-packed. 24.01.2022 Congratulations to the winners of the Bees with Backpacks Design Challenge 2020, Lilly and Mia from Bendigo South East College! Faced with the problem of bee decline, Year 9 students Lilly and Mia came up with a solution that will promote a bee friendly environment. The two students designed an app to help 25-50 years-olds become at home beekeepers. The app enables the user to go through stages of becoming a beekeeper with an interactive quiz to assess the readiness of the u...ser's knowledge to become a beekeeper. A special mention goes to the Innovation to Market winner, Victoria from Yarra Hills Secondary College, and all other participants who pitched amazing ideas in our state final. The Bees with Backpacks Design Challenge was developed in partnership with Victoria's Tech Schools and CSIRO, and sponsored by Telstra. Concurrently, the ending of this design challenge fits perfectly with the beginning of Australian Pollinator Week. This is a designated week when communities, businesses and organisations can come together to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and support their needs. 21.01.2022 Today we kicked off our Girls in STEAM Electric Car Project with an incredible industry tour with students from Bendigo South East College and Girton Grammar School! The students visited Safescape to learn about the creation of Bortana electric vehicles, toured the Thales Bendigo Hawkei and Bushmaster production lines, and designed their own waterjet cut item at the Bendigo TAFE - RTO no. 3077 Automotive and Engineering departments. Jeff is responsible for short term monitoring of atmospheric conditions underground, ensuring mandatory monitoring is completed. This involves planning and design of major projects in the ventilation and refrigeration plant design for Life-of-Mine (LOM). 14.01.2022 We're absolutely thrilled that Dr Sam Blake will be joining us for our first virtual Tech Futures Talk of 2021, 'The Quest to Solve the Zodiac 340 Cipher'! Last year Sam was one of three cryptologists who cracked the Zodiac 340 Cipher, which was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper in 1969 by the Zodiac serial killer. In this talk, Sam will guide the audience through the steps that led to solving the 50 year old cipher using modern day technology.... Sam is an Applied Mathematician from Melbourne, Australia. He has a PhD in mathematics from Monash University and is a research fellow at The University of Melbourne. His research interests include spread spectrum watermarking, cryptography, machine learning and symbolic computation. 10.01.2022 In the Term 3 holidays, we ran an online workshop focusing on coding and 3D printing. We were elated to learn Avoca Primary School student Jack has applied his new skills in 3D printing back at school to fix their Gaga Pit! He was recently interviewed by his local paper about the process, which saw him design and print triangular caps that stop water leaking into the pit. Thanks to Jack's mum Julie for sending us these photos!

08.01.2022 It's so exciting that La Trobe University in Bundoora will become carbon neutral by 2029, with the regional campuses set to be carbon neutral by 2022! At our host site in Bendigo, there are plans to install two new solar carports comprising close to 1860 solar panels, and around 300 solar panels will also be installed on the Student Services Corridor rooftop. These works will see a combined total of 705kw produced, which is the equivalent to the annual energy consumption of o...ver 220 average households. Jaunt upcycles iconic four wheel drives into electric cars for adventure. Australia has one of the lowest adoption rates of electric vehicles in the world, and one of the highest transport emissions per capita. Cars built for adventure dominate our culture and car sales, but this desire to explore can be a catalyst to tra...nsform Australia’s transport industry into something with a positive environmental and social impact. Bendigo Tech School has partnered with Jaunt in this community enterprise in which Bendigo girls will convert a classic 3-door Range Rover to electric operation. Four Tech Schools worked with YCA and Telstra to deliver the online challenge, inviting students to identify and solve problems in their community that have arisen due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 03.01.2022 We're so excited that Bendigo South East College students Lilly, Adler and Cooper finished on the podium for Young Change Agents Coronavirus Youth Design Challenge! The online challenge was developed between four Tech Schools, YCA and Telstra, inviting students to develop solutions to problems that have emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic. "We asked young people to look at a problem as an opportunity, rather than having a deficit mindset. It was about thinking positively and... thinking about design solutions from a really empathetic perspective," says Graeme Wiggins, Bendigo Tech School Director. 03.01.2022 In line with Bendigo's status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, we've pivoted our Tourism program to focus on Covid-19 recovery for the hospitality industry. In this program, students will use Augmented Reality to develop a creative solution to a problem identified by a local gastronomy business.
