25.01.2022 We are looking at two species here, most likely in a mutualistic symbiotic relationship. The rough scallop sponge (Myxilla incrustans) appears to give the spiny pink scallop (Chlamys hastata) some protection from the scallops predators (mainly seastars) as the seastars struggle to get a grip on the scallops, sponge coated shell. There are many color variants, and it is possible that there are also more than one species that have been placed together.
