23.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why your young horse needs to have its teeth checked? A horses teeth continue to grow over its entire life. They grow three deciduous pre molars that are discarded at about the same time we are generally breaking them in. In picture two you can see the upper and lower caps on the number 6 tooth being shed. Imagine all that going on while you are being asked to accept a bit into their mouth. In picture number three I have circled an eruption cyst. Erupt...ion cysts are bony enlargements that can be observed in juvenile horses on the ventral aspect of the mandible. Generally they are only cosmetic and cause no problems. In picture 4 you can see the adult incisor starting to form inside the socket. The baby tooth has fallen out a little prematurely in the decomposition process. It’s a pretty important time in your young horses life. A retained cap can cause a fair bit of hassle if it’s left and not dealt with.

21.01.2022 Happy birthday to all the horses.

19.01.2022 The importance of horse feeding height from a dental and possibly a skeletal point of view is a little misunderstood. A horse very rarely eats high. Their body is not designed this way. For a horse to masticate correctly it’s bottom jaw needs to extend beyond its upper. It then travels in a circular motion. Over and over again. 10000 time a kilogram. Gravity plays a major part in this action. ... Picture one has a feeder hung high on a fence. While it looks professional and good in saddle club in the real world it’s causing a Mass of problems with my horse. Picture two is a little lower and a little better. However still not quite right. Picture 3 is spot on. Their heads are low and they can eat correctly. Feeding high will lead to your horse having rostral extensions on their upper 6 teeth and usually caudal extension on the lower 11s. This essentially leads to their jaw the jaw to be locked up. Put bluntly it costs you money. Your horse will not digest feed properly and will run round with its head upside down. So easy solution feed on the ground.

17.01.2022 Unfortunately I had a little misadventure a fortnight ago. I copped a love tap of two on my shin. I went away for a week to try heal. Didn’t quite work so neither am I for the rest of this week. I’ll reassess after the doctor tomorrow and then start taking some bookings again. Cheers... Ben See more

08.01.2022 It’s a new financial year and this year things will be a little different. Payment will be 100% on the day unless prior arrangements are made. I accept payment in all the usual forms. ... I will also be limiting my travel to spend more time with my family. Sorry for any inconvenience

07.01.2022 This is one heck of a good horse. 35 years and looking so good. Great job Paul and Jane. Do you have an old horse? Post a pic here and see how old we can get

07.01.2022 Black speargrass (Heteropogon contortus). It’s important to be aware of changes in your pasture and how they may affect your horses. Speargrass grows rampant in central Queensland and at this time of year has the potential to cause mayhem in their mouths. ... This little mare had a mass of seeds lodged under her tongue causing her great discomfort. The owner noticed a reluctance to eat and a slight odour wafting out of her mouth. Spear grass as the name suggests has a head that works it’s way into the mucosa inside the mouth and then stays there causing irritation. There’s not a great deal you can do in the way of prevention. Seems to affect some horses and not others.

06.01.2022 Hi everyone. This will be the platform I use from now own to organise the Equine Dental side of my business. I will be travelling less this year and trying to spend more time at home. I’ll still be servicing roughly the same area just on a slightly different time frame. I’ll be traveling roughly one week a month so if we can not sort a time out during that visit you may have to wait a while for my next visit. Unfortunately this may cause some folks to miss out at first but... we will get it sorted. The way I was going was unsustainable and neither my bank nor my family was going ahead. This year payment will be expected on the day either by cash, bank transfer or credit card unless prior arrangemeats are made( sorry if this offends anyone). I will still be offering up nuggets of golden advice on here in regards to Equine dentistry. Thanks or your Ongoing support over the last 8 years and I look forward to continuing on into the future with my many great clients.

06.01.2022 It’s not often you get to see what’s going on under the skin bone and muscle. So I opened this one up. Be kind to your young horses. They have a bit going on in there.

06.01.2022 Imagine trying to eat with this in your mouth. Horses need to have their teeth checked every 12 months. In these dry conditions with hay costing more than a divorce you want your horse to utilise every little bit of food they can. ... Be kind. Get it sorted.
