22.01.2022 Today’s wander through the Tooth & Co archives takes us to the Sydney Inner West suburbs of Balmain and Rozelle, which have a long history of offering an abunda...nce of watering holes. Our post actually originates with an enquiry from a man named John Black. John was keen to see what we hold on the London Hotel in Balmain, and specifically any information on his relative Robert Black, a former licensee. The problem is that we have now tried a few times to respond to John but our emails keep bouncing back, so hopefully you will see this post John. We receive many requests from family historians who are seeking information about their relatives who were once licensees or owners of pubs. In many cases we can assist with information found in the Tooth & Co Yellow Card Series. This is a large collection of index cards which include brief information about hotels including names of licensees, a summary of the quantity of beer and other beverages supplied by Tooth and Company Limited and information about who owned the hotel. They also usually include several photos of the hotel. We also hold other records for some hotels, including manager’s office, property and valuation files. These are very useful for tracing leases, orders and renovations. They will often include correspondence, reports and information relating to any significant events, such as fires and floods, and every now and then you may find drawings or plans. By looking through these records for John Black, we found that his relative Robert Black became the licensee of the London Hotel on 22 February 1924, later selling the lease to A. Rawlings in March 1925. Unfortunately the records we have on this particular hotel are sparse, as it was Tooth’s competitor Toohey's that did the lion's share of trade at the London Hotel. However, the hotel always had a supply of bottles of Tooth’s beer for Tooth's drinkers, even if they didn't have Tooth’s on draft. Robert Black was charged for using the premises for gambling and betting on 6 September 1924, and although the outcome of the case is not included in the Tooth & Co files, the police investigation into betting at the hotel can be read on Trove. Apparently the betting slips were found in his wife’s handbag! (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page16117748) While we were looking for photos of the London Hotel, we came across a number of photos of many other hotels in the Balmain and Rozelle areas, so we couldn’t resist sharing some of them here. By our count, we have records relating to 23 hotels in Balmain and 11 in neighbouring Rozelle. We've included photos of just some of them here. For many downsizers, emotion trumps logic when it comes to sandstone."The majority of the interested buyers have been looking for their next purchase for a while with Mr Williams saying several buyers have been patiently waiting for the perfect home like this one for more than a year. It’s the sort of place that people could be lookig for over a couple of years. Opportunities like this are hard to come by so we expect some competitive bidding on Saturday, he said.
