06.01.2022 What is intuition and what role does it play in photography? Intuition is how we respond emotionally to our surroundings. It's how we use our gut feeling to know that a great photograph is "just around the corner" or "over the next hill". It's that voice from within or that yearning inside our heart that tells us to press the shutter button at a precise moment. Intuition is effortless, creative and authentic.... But it takes some time getting there. We can’t have an intuitive sense of things we aren’t interested in or don’t know much about. It takes carving out our own path in photography, instead of walking the paths of others. It takes a deep, invested interest in something. It involves a basic understanding of what makes us tick on an emotional level. Following one’s intuition should be the easiest thing in the world. But often, it’s terrifyingly difficult. We are afraid to express our true selves through our photography even though it’s the one thing we want to do above all. We prefer to conform, to take photographs that are lost in the background noise of societal trends and expectations. If individuality, self-expression and creativity are things you’re interested in, learning to follow your intuition is a good start. Check out my article below to find out how what it is, how to find it and some common barriers you might encounter along the way. As always, let me know what you think! Take care.
